Gladstone’s Land, Edinburgh

Gladstone’s Land is amongst the oldest houses dotted along The Royal Mile. National Trust for Scotland owns the 17th-century dwelling, so you can enjoy tours of the landmark.

The tenement house’s history revolves around trade, with its speciality being dram shops and taverns. In fact, Rabbie Bur Burns Bar inhabited the property for over 100 years until it closed in 1950!

As well as pubs and dram shops, Gladstone’s Land housed a dairy and a coffee shop. Nowadays, you can find remains of these at the property’s fantastic ice cream parlour and coffee shop!

After sampling a sweet treat here, be sure to explore the building via a specialist tour. During these, you’ll receive an insight into Old Town and the house’s former residents.

A highlight of the property has to be the amazing, bespoke ceilings which date back to 1620! The ceilings rest on the third floor and feature hand-painted flowers and animals.

The National Trust Scotland even offers an app with a walking tour of Edinburgh. Why not download it and follow the route to New Town’s Georgian House?

Uncover centuries of history in this fascinating gem…
