Gladstone’s Library
Gladstone Library was built following a bequest from statesmen and four-time prime minister, William Gladstone, and is the only prime ministerial library in the UK. The building was created in 1902 and designed by John Douglas.
The world-famous reading rooms house thousands of books, including Gladstone’s own personal library. The rooms themselves are silent study spaces, offering writers, researchers, and scholars a space to work. Visitors are welcome to sign up for access on a one-off basis and read within the tranquil confines of the rooms.
Gladstone’s Library also plays host to a number of talks and masterclasses from authors and scholars as well as the annual Gladfest – a friendly literary festival for book lovers and writers.
Soak in the cosy atmosphere at Gladstone for that little bit longer by tucking into breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Food for Thought bistro. Weekend visitors also have the option to book afternoon tea on Saturdays and a traditional roast on Sundays.
