Great Wood, Walla Crag Via Cat Gill & Falcon Crag
Begin the walk at the Great Wood carpark. Take the path next to a bench that leads into the woods. The path will lead you through the woodland, which is carpeted with bluebells in spring, and you will eventually come to a vehicle barrier. Go around it and the take the path that leads straight on.
When you come to a turning on the path, turn left and go up the stone steps signposted for Cat Gill. The steps are steep and caution is advised. Continue the path up Cat Gill and go through the gate around halfway up. The path leads away from the gill and follows a wall to the left and continues to rise. You will come to another gate in the wall. Go through the gate and take the steps.
Keep following the path as it rises, there will be some scrambling required. Go through the next gate you come to and continue following the path up through the gorse. The path will soon become gentler, and you will come to a hole in the wall, go through this and into the woodland. Follow the path through the woodland with the wall to your right.
Follow the path straight up until you reach the spacious plateau where you can enjoy magnificent views. Head back down the path to a stile you will have passed, go over the stile. Take the path directly in front of you that leads to the fells ahead. You will come to a fork in the path, take the left-hand side. Follow the path as it gradually descends.
The path ends at a corner of the enclosure with two gates. Take the right gate and head towards Great Wood. Keep following the path which is sometimes uneven. You will eventually arrive at a narrow footbridge that crosses over Cat Gill. Cross over the bridge and continue walking straight to return to the carpark.
