Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre is one of the best places to see wildlife in the northeast of England. It is a birdwatcher’s paradise, located right next to the shore and offering spectacular views of Druridge Bay.
Hauxley Nature Reserve
A former open-cast mine, Hauxley Nature Reserve was acquired by the Northumberland Wildlife Trust and turned into a haven for wildlife in 1983.
After substantial remodelling and expansion of the reserve, the most recent addition is an eco-friendly facility that was built by an army of dedicated volunteers. It is, in fact, a straw-bale construction, and it has a variety of other environmentally friendly features that make it an ideal home for a Wildlife Trust staff.
The northern marsh orchid, viper’s bugloss, and bloody cranesbill all grow in abundance in Hauxley Nature Reserve. Some of the most frequent butterflies to be drawn to these plants include the common blue and wall brown. Dragonflies and damselflies, including the common hawker and common darter, can be found in the ponds. Our red squirrels live in the woods, so keep an eye out for them.
There are four miles of walks, including a circular path and a trail leading to two hides, together with six hides, one of which has been set aside for members only, which allow you to quietly observe an abundance of birds, including grey herons, tree sparrows, turnstones, and shelducks.
The Lookout CafĂ© provides delicious cakes, coffee, snacks and refreshments in a fantastic setting – the views across the lake and Bay are heavenly!
