Heughscar & the Cockpit from Pooley Bridge
Begin the walk on the track beyond the gate close to Roehead Farm. The track ascends onto heather covered moorland before reaching a crossroads. Turn right here towards Howton. Following this track will bring you to the Cockpit stone circle, the largest ancient monument on the moor.
Facing the Cockpit from the direction you approached, take the path left that runs beside a large stone that stands out from the rest. Keep following the path and Heughscar will soon come into view. At the crossroads, continue straight and head towards the woodland.
Take the left-hand fork at the next crossroads. Walk towards the stone wall that encircles the woodland and turn left at the corner to head to the summit. From here you will be able to see Ullswater along with the Eden Valley, Penrith, and the Pennines.
Follow the path down the other side of Heughscar and at the fork, veer left. Keep going straight and the path will eventually become clearer. Walk towards the line of trees head and you’ll soon reach the external corner of the field boundary wall. Follow the wall around to the right and continue along the wall downhill.
You will reach another fork in the path, take the left-hand side. The path will join the track you started the walk on.
Come and embark on a memorable hike…
