Quarr Abbey, Isle of Wight
Quarr Abbey is a historic gem on the Isle of Wight. You can find this awe-inspiring landmark on the outskirts of Ryde.
The abbey came to be in 1132 when it was founded by the Cistercian order. However, it was eventually destroyed during Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries.
The site lay derelict for over four centuries until the impressive building we see today was built by Dom Bellot and his team in 1912. These days, Quarr Abbey is open on a daily basis and allows visitors to attend worship with the resident Benedictine monks.
If you wish to find out more about the monastery’s past during your visit, the on-site Visitor Centre offers guided tours. If you’d prefer to opt out of a tour, there’s a range of exhibits on display, too.
