Rotunda Museum
The Rotunda Museum has attracted visitors along Scarborough’s coast for over 150 years. It’s amongst the first purpose-built museums in the UK and displays a range of collections surrounding the Yorkshire coast.
This marvellous museum is home to over 8,000 artefacts for you to look at; some are over 11,000 years old! Its collections range from an archive of Scarborough’s social history to palaeontology.
A highlight is the Star Carr collection, where you can discover a range of special artefacts from the Mesolithic site. Here, you’ll be able to study an antler headdress, flint tools, animal remains and more.
As well as the Star Carr exhibit, you can uncover a range of artefacts from the Roman, Egyptian and Medieval Periods. There are many historic, taxidermied animals for you to look at too, including a collection of Birds of Paradise.
If you’re interested in entomology, you’ll be delighted by the insect exhibit. Here, you’ll get to see a range of butterflies from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Rotunda Museum is very accessible and allows wheelchair accessibility on the ground floor. There are accessible events at the museum too, ensuring everyone can view these marvellous collections.
