Royal Border Bridge
Dating back to the mid-19th century, the Royal Border Bridge is a historic gem in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. It was built to connect Scotland and England, and was opened by Queen Victoria in 1850.
Dubbed a “masterpiece of architecture and engineering”, the bridge features 28 arches that reach the height of a whopping 120 feet! Its original function was to transport people and goods between the regions along the East Coast Main Line railway.
Over 170 years later, the Royal Border Bridge still carries trains between Scotland and England, however its now a Grade I listed building. It’s been subjected to many restoration projects over the years, so expect it to remain a vital part of Berwick for years to come!
The best way to experience the bridge is via a walk along the River Tweed and under the bridge itself. You’ll really get to appreciate the bridge’s architecture first hand.
