St. Materiana’s Church

St Materiana’s Church sits high on the cliffs, overlooking Tintagel village. Little is known about Materiana but it’s thought she may be Madryn, a fifth century Princess of Gwent who preached in North Cornwall.

Inside the church visitors will find both Saxon and Norman features, including a crude Norman font, but the most ancient object is the Roman Milestone dating back to the reign of Emperor Licinius. The stone was discovered in the churchyard in 1889 and brought inside.

To the west of the church tower, in the churchyard is a Bronze Age standing stone or monolith. Visitors are welcome during daylight hours.

An idyllic day out awaits at the charming St. Materiana’s Church…
