Townend National Trust
Step back in time at Townend and discover life in a 17th-century farmhouse in Troutbeck. Here you’ll learn all about the Browne family that lived here for 400 years, discover the woodcarvings created by George Browne and explore the library’s impressive collection.
The library is made up of approximately 1,500 books which cover everything from novels, poetry, farming, religion, law, medicine, and current affairs. Among the collection are 45 entirely unique books that have not survived anywhere else in the world.
George Browne was an enthusiastic woodcarver and the furniture at Townend hint at his fascination with local, traditional woodcarvings, as well as his more exotic inspirations. Stand out designs include the clock cases in the Firehouse and the mermaids supporting the fireplace in the State Bedroom.
