Trematon Castle
The Tamar Estuary is home to Trematon Castle, a tiny Norman motte-and-bailey castle and gatehouse owned by the Duchy of Cornwall since 1337.
In 1068, Robert, Count of Mortain built the Castle to help William the Conqueror maintain control after the Battle of Hastings.
Garden designers Julian and Isabel Bannerman leased Trematon Castle from the Duchy of Cornwall in 2012 and began planting a private garden in an experimental way, hoping to show off the romantic and pre-Raphaelite glory of the Castle’s wildflowers, forest, and orchard. In line with its textured appearance, the garden is private, small, and run out of love, not for money.
Wander around this beautiful garden and explore the castle’s history…
