Warkworth Castle is located on a hillock above the River Coquet, boasting a majestic cross-shaped keep.
Warkworth Castle
Warkworth was and remains one of the largest and most impressive fortresses in North East England, once home to the powerful Percy family that now lives in Alnwick Castle. “Harry Hotspur,” the crusader and bane of Scottish raiders, once lived here.
This awe-inspiring medieval castle features a nearly intact circuit of towered walls, which leads you to the impressive keep.
The great tower or keep is almost entirely complete, although construction began over 600 years ago under the first Earl of Northumberland. It played a key role in the long-running war between England and Scotland after being besieged by the Scots in 1327.
Warkworth Hermitage
The late medieval cave Hermitage and chapel of a solitary holy man is located 1/2 mile from the castle, accessible only by boat and tucked away beside the Coquet.
The Earls of Northumberland built the Hermitage after hiring a priest to live in the cave-like dwelling and pray in the rock-hewn chapel.
