Yr Ysgwrn
Hedd Wyn, or Ellis Humphrey Evans, was an early 20th-century poet who lived at Yr Ysgwrn. He lived a typical rural life where religion, agriculture and Eisteddfodau were key parts of society.
Hedd Wyn was conscripted in 1916 and later joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Wyn posted his entry to the National Eisteddfod from a village in France. By the end of the same month, he was fatally wounded. His poem was victorious, and the bard chair was draped in black and given the name Y Gadair Ddu, meaning The Black Chair.
Wyn’s life, along with Yr Ysgwrn, has come to symbolise the losses of WWI.
Visitors are welcome to explore the 19th-century cottage, including its kitchen, parlour, three bedrooms and buttery as well as the stable, coach house and hay loft. There is also a shop, stocking Welsh poetry, including that of Hedd Wyn.
Enjoy a day of fun at Yr Ysgwrn…
