  • "Generally we did love the cottage and it’s convenience to town."

But to advertise it as suitable for 4 adults inappropriate as the twin room definitely more suited to children, with unforgiving mattresses! The double was luxurious and comfortable. The ensuite shower not very user friendly as inadequate drainaway. Nowhere to hang towels to dry. Problem with the tv as no subtitles available. One of us is hearing impaired. Parking was tricky. Positive note- extremely well equipped kitchen Negative being trying to figure out the Aga!

Spacious and well appointed. Yes, the beds in the second bedroom are as previously reviewed very hard. A couple of new mattresses could easily fix that. Enjoyed cooking with the smart Aga. Took a while to get used to what am the light switches did! Lovely courtyard garden where we are most evenings. We will certainly return here at some point.

We like the spaciousness and kitchen provisions, everything you could want. The digital aga is easy to understand. The housekeeping is excellent. One large drawback is the very hard bunk beds in the second bedroom, uncomfortable last year and, in spite of commenting to the Agents, they are still very uncomfortable this year. For this reason alone, we may not return next year.

Well stocked with toilet rolls bin liners etc, which not all are. TV package is fab, oven is amazing, bathroom unique, all fixtures and furnishings are very high quality. Courtyard is lovely. House needs to be maintained as well as the gardener looks after the garden. We stayed here 5 years ago and can clearly see noticeable wear and tear, ie ice machine not working, good quality utensils but all needed cleaned before use. Needs a deep clean and reboot for the next 5 years to keep up the high standards. Would come back with pleasure.

Modern and classic furniture mixed well, lovely courtyard garden attended to by a gardener on a weekly basis. The mattresses for the truckle bed in the second bedroom are rock hard, even children might find it difficult to sleep, as an adult I found it impossible. The caretaker was friendly and efficient at supplying rinse aid when the dishwasher ran out. We have already booked for next year!

The cottage is very comfortable, well equipped and makes a perfect base for exploring Dartmoor and surrounding areas. Only have one minor point to make as previously made before by another reviewer the Kettle needs replacing as it clicks off too soon. Will definitely return!

  • "We loved the cottage and would stay there again."

I had an issue contacting the caretaker, phoning twice on the morning before the day of our arrival and leaving a message but did not get a reply. I had to phone Sykes main office on the morning of our arrival. A few hours later, the caretaker did phone back but the communication was very poor and not reassuring. There are a few electrical issues that the owner should be aware of: 1. The kettle has a fault whereby it turns off well before the water reaches boiling point. One has to wait a few sconds and then flick the switch again. It takes about 4-5 attempts to get it to boil. I suggest it is replaced. 2. The light/dimmer switch for bank of spot lights above the sink area is faulty and these lights cannot be turned on. A replacement switch is required. 3. The lamp on the LHS between the dresser and TV wall does not work. I suspect the ring may have tripped, but did not investigate any further. This means that corner of the room remains very dark.

Thank you for providing your feedback which we have taken to the owner and who has confirmed that they have replaced the kettle, the dimmer switches have been replaced and they will investigate the lamp situation. We hope to welcome you back to Dairy Cottage very soon. Property Owner

The master bedroom and en-suite were amazing, very luxurious. Parking was a bit of an issue when unloading and loading the car up as it was a trek to the spaces available. We were quite surprised at the close proximity of the neighbour's outside space and at times her washing in our faces. We appreciated having the Netflix account.

  • "This is a superb property, one of the best I ever stayed in."

It's quiet (there is another house between this one and the road; access is through a passage). Someone went to a lot of trouble and expense making it so lovely. The living room and main bedroom are surprisingly large. The garden area is very pleasant (though the photo on the webpage doesn't do it justice). I think the best thing was the shower in the main bedroom, it was magnificent -- pipes and handles and knobs galore (and seemed new, designed to be an Edwardian thowback I suppose). I only have three complaints. First, the bed in the smaller bedroom had a rock-hard mattress: OK for children but my daughter (in her mid-twenties) ended up sleeping on the living room sofa. Second, the kettle in the kitchen didn't work right, switched itself off when the water in it was nowhere near boiling. We had to run it three or four times in succession to make it hot enough to make tea. And third, one of the light switches in the living room didn't work (the one controlling the recess lights over the kitchen countertop.) But everything else was great: the Aga worked fine, the tv was fantastic, the water pressure was excellent. I have no other complaints at all, really excellent.

Everything you could need is there, warm, cosy but lovely modern touches. The Aga and Roll Top Bath were superb to use, the bath was loved by our children. We arrived with our 3 yr old and 10 month old, again the house was very well equipped for youngsters and the lovely caretaker had set it all up ahead of our arrival. We had a slight issue with the boiler on day 1, the caretaker arrived within minutes of me phoning her and sorted it straight away. Parking was fine as stated in previous reviews, we found spaces just down the street every day and only once used the main car park which is a short stroll through the beautiful churchyard. The pictures do not do this beautiful cottage justice. We couldn’t fault it, was extremely sad to leave! Looking forward to visiting again soon.

I was a bit surprised to see a bicycle in the alley way, and another small garden inside the alleyway, which I didn't expect, otherwise the cottage is lovely.

Thank you for your review and we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Dairy Cottage. Comfort and mattresses are of course a personal preference. However the owners will investigate further with a view to replacing the mattresses if required. To clarify, the courtyard is not shared: it is divided into three. One section is fenced off. The other two sections are divided by a step up. The neighbour has the first section which you walk through to access the property. Dairy Cottage has the larger section of the courtyard. Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback and we are sorry to hear that the Dartmoor weather wasn't on your side. We absolutely adored the courtyard garden with it’s beautiful planting and we had fun getting used to using an Aga in the kitchen. The fixtures and fittings in the cottage are exceptional. I only had one slight niggle and this was the mattresses in children’s bedroom. Both girls mentioned that they could feel the bed springs but it didn’t detract from the holiday. The location of the cottage is perfect for popping to one of the super shops in Chagford. Chagford itself is a very pretty village with every amenity you could wish for on your doorstep. Most shops are independent and artisan (2 bakeries, farm shop, cheese shop, wine, local crafts to name a few). Everything you need is here. There are a number of pubs and cafes serving great food. We particularly enjoyed the food at The Chagford Inn. There are lots of incredible local walks and thankfully the weather was kind to us - we had lots of sunshine. Thank you Dairy Cottage we had a great time!!

  • "There were many plusses to this cottage, the photos show these and they are accurate."

I will however concentrate on points that may be of interest to people making future bookings so that they may be taken into consideration. apart from the parking, everything else below could be corrected by the owners. The internet speed is terrible, lots of dropout everyday. I tested it regularly and on a good day for a short period it would be 11 megabytes per second, with and upload of 0.2. It's BT Internet. I thought that this was a consequence of being in a rural area, until we had various meals in the four pubs in the village which are 250 metres away and what took 45 minutes to one hour to download in the cottage, such as a guided walk and map for the area, took 1.5 seconds in the pubs. The cottage has a very old BT router. I strongly suggest that this is replaced with a smarthub and suscribe to a better connection speed. I would happily pay the extra £5 per week on top of the current price. It has a very large, lovely smart TV. That's where it ends. There are very few channels on terrestrial TV, with great gaps between say channel 5 and then the next is channel 31 and the next 57. It's because there is no Freeview on the TV. They state that Netflix, iPlayer, ITV Hub, Amazon Prime Video are available. That is true. However you can't access them for more than 4-5 seconds at a time as the buffering is absolutely terrible and was so everyday. Often none of these were available as they would not open. We tried watching a film or a programme so many times, but instead watched only a tiny clip, followed by minutes of the buffering sign and then a notice 'Whoops sorry something has happened, please try later'. The cause is the apalling download speed / broadband width and the constant dropout. The bathroom in the main bedroom is modern and very impressive, until you use the shower. It is an open shower and despite experimenting with the shower, taking the flow down to the lowest possible setting, the outflow in the floor could not cope. Water soon made its way across the floor. We stopped using it and used the tiny, but effective shower in the second bathroom. The kitchen is nice, except for the electric Aga which takes a long time to heat up, then you cannot control the heat. Makes cooking difficult, especially as there is only one ring for cooking and one ring to keep food warm. It looks nice and cottage-like, but is a real nuisance and a disappointment. Please replace this with a modern cooker, with 3/4 cooking rings, an oven that you can control and even set timings. With the big black oven door, once closed you cannot see anything.

We really appreciate feedback and do our best to improve based on it. We do wish you had raised the broadband issues with us whilst you were staying. We had it checked out immediately and there was a fault with BT. We do pay for BT superfast broadband and ordinarily we get a download speed of around 60 mps and upload of about 15 mps. The cottage was redeveloped as our home and is done with things we love and in our style. We love the Aga and miss it when we are away..... it can be an acquired taste, but once you have got used to it, you never want to cook on anything else. The upstairs shower we have used ourselves many times without any problems. It is a Drummonds teardrop shower, and the room has been designed to drain through a channel. I have asked the builder to check the drain. I understand our home might not be to everybody's taste. We think it is a little piece of luxurious wonder in a magical setting. I do know, however, that a wet week on Dartmoor can be tough. Property Owner

Lovely large comfortable sofa, the best we have had. Likewise large TV and Netflix worked for us, which was a real bonus. Very well equipped and a lot of thought has gone into the decor, especially the bathroom, which was victorian grandeur with some modern touches. As others have observed, parking is a bit of an issue but managed to park within 10 - 100 yards of cottage. There are a couple of lovely walks from the door, including to Castle Drogo. Have to agree with another reviewer that one thing that let things down somewhat was the standard of cleanliness. We found quite a few hairs in bedroom/bathroom plus dried on food in microwave and aga and a couple of other issues - this could be easily rectified. But overall we had a great stay.
