Day 1: Evening

Arrive at your accommodation, unwind and unpack

After making the journey, whether by train, bus or car, settle into your accommodation, unwind, unpack and make yourself at home!

Take some time to appreciate your surroundings and get acquainted with your new home away from home for the next couple of days.

Enjoy a delicious meal

Once you’ve had a moment to relax, you’ll likely be ready for a bite to eat. You can choose to cook up a storm in the kitchen or venture out to experience some of Port Isaac’s delicious, local food!

We’d recommend heading to The Golden Lion on Fore Street. This fantastic pub not only serves mouth-watering food, it also boasts mesmerising views across the beach and harbour. Round off your evening by watching the sun set behind the horizon.

What our Short Break Tester thought:
"We dropped our bags off at our home for the weekend, Beehive Cottage, a quaint cottage just moments away from the centre of this little fishing village. Despite the sea being metres from the front door, we felt perfectly tucked away.

After a quick look around we all headed down into the heart of Port Isaac to explore. I gave up counting how many times we said 'wow' - every angle in Port Isaac is picture perfect. We headed up the other side of the harbour and into the fields that lead to the South West Coast Path. Poppy and Bramley both charged about, hair blowing like crazy in the strong Cornish winds.

We then skipped back down the road and into The Golden Lion pub, more than ready for dinner. We were seated upstairs - try and book a table facing out onto the crashing waves, it's spectacular. There is also a balcony/terrace where you can sit out and enjoy an uninterrupted view over the harbour. I had the catch of the day (hake), Dan enjoyed a huge burger and Poppy has sausage and mash. All washed down with scoops of Cornish ice cream of course!"

Day 2: Morning

Breakfast

Wake up feeling refreshed and excited about all of the amazing things to do in Port Isaac. But first, breakfast, to fuel you for the adventures that lie ahead. You can either prepare something delicious in your new home away from home or head out early to grab a bite to eat.

Port Isaac is dotted with delightful cafés and coffee shops, all full of tempting treats. We’d recommend Fee’s or Noah’s on Fore Street, or The Chapel on Rosecarrock Hill.

Doc Martin Filming Locations Tour

doc martin filming locations port isaac

Port Isaac is arguably most famous for being the setting of the beloved series Doc Martin. With filming locations peppered across the village, one of the best ways to see them all is to join a guided tour.

Not only will you see iconic locations including Dr Ellingham’s surgery and Louisa’s primary school, but you’ll learn all the secrets to how Port Isaac transformed into Portwenn. The tour runs for up to an hour and a half and begins at Harbour Treats on Church Hill.

This is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Port Isaac and we’d recommend booking here.

What our UK Short Break Tester thought:
"Dan and Bramley were up bright and early to hunt out the local surfing spots, so Poppy and I headed off to find breakfast. We were spoilt for choice but settled on some croissants in Fee's.

Back from this surf trip, Dan met us outside Harbour Treats to tick off the first thing of our itinerary for the day - a Doc Martin tour!!

I will be honest, we haven't watched a lot of Doc Martin in my time, but Mike, our guide, expertly wove the Doc Martin filming locations with his experience on set into a lovely overview and history of Part Isaac. He knew all the hidden shortcuts and special spots, my favourite being 'Squeezy Belly Alley'!"

Day 2: Afternoon

Grab lunch in the village

Another of the best things to do in Port Isaac is sample delicious local food. No trip to the village would be complete without visiting Nicki B’s Pasty Shop. This award-winning pasty shop serves traditional Cornish Pasties as well as steak, steak and stilton, cheese and onion, and vegetable pasties. You may also be tempted to try one of their fresh, Cornish crab sandwiches.

Stand-up Paddleboarding Lessons

Paddleboarding Port Isaac

There’s no better way to see the beauty of Cornwall‘s coast than from the water, and Port Isaac is home to countless activities where you can merge fun and sightseeing on one of the best beaches in Cornwall.

Why not try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding? Either bring your own along and experience the beautiful Cornish waters, or book with Cornish Rock Tors, who operate in Port Isaac. Whether you’re a beginner or a paddleboard pro, there’s something for everyone!

Begin your training in the shallow waters of Port Gaverne, famous for being one of the best sea glass beaches in the UK. Here you can master the basics before enjoying a guided paddle around the cove. Don’t fret if you don’t have all of the kit, as for £45 for 2.5 hours, Cornish Rock Tors include everything you’ll need!

Grab dinner at The Angry Anchovy

If you’ve worked up an appetite after an afternoon on the water, then you’re in luck with the next element of our 48-hour guide to Port Isaac.

We’d recommend stopping at The Angry Anchovy, one of the best restaurants in Cornwall. Here, you can indulge in delicious pizza with an array of toppings as well as a whole host of delicious sides. While dining in, look forward to reminiscing with your loved ones about the day’s adventures.

However, we suggest grabbing your pizzas to go so you can experience the next unforgettable thing in Port Isaac.

Enjoy a sunset picnic on the South West Coast Path

sunset over the south west coast path

Food in hand, take a short walk along New Road to join the South West Coastal Path, where you can follow the path past the beach, up Roscarrock Hill and past Bert’s Large Chair to a delightful green space overlooking Port Isaac and the sea.

Set up here and dig into your pizzas while you marvel at the sun setting over Port Isaac. Look forward to the hues of purple, pink and orange that adorn the sky; the perfect end to a perfect day in Port Isaac.

What our UK Short Break Tester thought:
"Tour finished, we headed off in search of some lunch. Port Isaac is known for its food, and we are known for our eating! We decided to scout out a 'Cornish Picnic', in the shape of pasties and crab sandwiches. First stop was Nicki B's Pasty Shop, where after a few gestures from us Nicki convinced Poppy that her delicious cheese and onion pasty did not, in fact, contain any onion, and was therefore safe for her 6 year old tastebuds. Suffice to say we weren't allowed a bit of hers!

We headed up the hill to Fresh From The Sea where we got crab sandwiches to go, and we took the whole lot with us on our way down to Port Gaverne, Port Isaac's smaller and rockier little sister. We had planned to spend a few hours stand up paddle boarding, but although the weather was perfect for surfing it was less perfect for balancing Poppy on a board.

Instead we decided to explore Port Gaverne where Poppy loved collecting all of the different coloured rocks and sea glass on the beach. Climbing the steps built into the cliff, we explored the connecting bridge and admired the fishermen on the rocks until the wind blew us into the Port Gaverne Hotel to quench our thirst.

Later, we went on one of the most spectacular dog walks that I can remember. Poppy practiced standing still to spot rabbits in the gorse, we saw cormorants diving for fish, not to mention the stunning scenery and crashing waves - it was magic!

Back at Beehive Cottage, we had a quick turnaround before heading out for dinner - pizza at The Angry Anchovy. This was a short 5 minute walk up the hill. We were immediately greeted with smiling faces and the magical words 'would you like complimentary olives and breadsticks?' Our waitress couldn't have been friendlier, and the food was perfect. We rounded the meal off with affogato and a chocolate bombe - if you like pizza, this is a must visit!"

Day 3: Morning

Drive to Rock to catch the Ferry to Padstow

Wake up feeling rested, ready for another day of hunting out the best things to do near Port Isaac! After checking out of your accommodation, don’t worry, the fun doesn’t stop here.

Take a 20-minute drive to Rock where you can park in Rock Road Car Park, PL27 6LD before hopping onto the Ferry from Rock to Padstow.

Not only is this a quick way to reach Padstow, but it also offers beautiful views of the River Camel. The ferry only accepts card payments; they charge £3 per adult and £1.50 per child. The ferry runs every 20 minutes throughout the year, although there are no Sunday crossings between mid-November and mid-February. Check out the full Rock to Padstow ferry timetable here.

Visit the National Lobster Hatchery

lobster

Once you’ve arrived in the charming town of Padstow enjoy a refreshing walk along the harbour, marvelling at the boats moored before you reach the National Lobster Hatchery.

This friendly and educational conservation centre is undoubtedly one of the best things to do while in Port Isaac. This fantastic attraction aims to support the growth of the lobster population by rearing and then releasing them into the wild.

Spend time exploring the centre where you can get up close with lobster babies, pregnant lobsters, giant lobsters and an array of other exciting coastal wildlife. The most exciting part is that each ticket is valid for 12 months, meaning you can come back at any time! Perfect for those of you who choose to adopt a lobster during your visit.

What our UK Short Break Tester thought:
"We were up bright and early on day three, ready to experience the remaining things to do near Port Isaac. We couldn't wait to see more! We headed straight to Rock and were lucky that a ferry was just arriving as we headed down to the beach. Minutes later we were in Padstow and heading to the National Lobster Hatchery!

I had absolutely no expectations - I was thinking tanks, lobsters, what more could there be? Although, yes, there were tanks and lobsters - the whole place was fascinating! The lobster maternity ward, the star fish and spider crabs, not to mention that the enthusiasm and knowledge of the staff was unmatched.

Poppy had a nice look at all the lobsters of various ages before heading upstairs to play and craft in their kids room, she was truly in her happy place. I, however took my time watching the baby lobster swirling in their tanks, and learning about the huge efforts that have gone into keeping the species prevalent throughout our waters."

Day 3: Afternoon

Enjoy lunch at Rick Stein’s Fish and Chip shop

No trip to Padstow or the surrounding area would be complete without a trip to Rick Stein’s! Offering both sit-in and takeaway options, this award-winning fish and chip restaurant boasts a mouthwatering menu.

Whether you’re craving classic fish and chips or you’d rather sink your teeth into salt and pepper squid or scallops, there’s something delicious waiting for you.

Savour this scrumptious food inside or outside, while the sound of the sea in the harbour acts as the perfect soundtrack to your lunch.

Drive to Tintagel Castle

After a fun-filled jaunt in Padstow, head back to the Padstow Ferry terminal where you can catch the ferry back to Rock ready to experience another of the best things to do near Port Isaac.

Once in the car, drive east to Tintagel, home to the final instalment of this guide to the best Port Isaac attractions, Tintagel Castle. There are a handful of pay and display car parks available in the village, including The Castle Car Park, PL34 0DD and King Arthur’s Car Park, PL34 0DA .

Next, walk up to the footbridge to begin exploring Arthurian myth and legend. After roaming the dramatic ruins, head down to Tintagel Haven, the beach below, where you can admire views across the rugged landscape and Merlin’s Cave, where it’s rumoured you can see his face in the rocks.

What our UK Short Break Tester thought:
"The next stop was the famous Rick Stein's Fish and Chip Shop. Dan had fish tacos and I had a fish finger sandwich and Poppy went with the traditional cod and chips. As a lovely extra touch, I was gifted flowers and a photo as a memento of our meal for Mother's Day!

We then boarded the ferry back over to Rock ready for our next stop Tintagel Castle! Tintagel Castle is a phenomenal spot; the views alone are worth the effort of the walk down and back up the cliffside, but the ruins of this once magnificent castle give you a true sense of what a special place it is. We spotted seals bobbing around the rocks and Poppy loved exploring the caves, nooks and crannies of this otherworldly place. No words, or photos for that matter, can do it justice!"
