Sykes Holiday Cottages declares a climate emergency!

As part of our Impact Strategy, we’ve joined forces with Tourism Declares. This is an initiative that assists tourism businesses and organisations in declaring a climate emergency, ensuring deliberate action, in accordance with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) recommendation to reduce global carbon emissions to 55% below 2017 levels by 2030.

Find out more about our climate emergency declaration and how we plan to support Tourism Declares below…

Sykes Declares a Climate Emergency

Our impact on people and the world is just as important to us as shareholder profit. We aim to make sure we do our part to build a cleaner, greener and fairer future for everybody. We do this by developing innovative methods of working that have a positive social and environmental impact.

Working alongside Tourism Declares, Sykes Holiday Cottages pledges to work with all stakeholders to reform tourism in order to achieve effective climate action.

We aim to support the global goal of halving emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions as soon as feasible before 2050.

And, we will continually align our actions with the most recent scientific guidelines, ensuring that our strategy stays compatible with a 1.5°C rise beyond pre-industrial levels by 2100.

So, how will we do it?

Our Plan

In line with our Impact Mission Statement, we have four pledges that we’ve set out to achieve:

  1. Plant 1 million trees by 2024
  2. Become a carbon-neutral business by 2024
  3. Enable 1,000 disadvantaged families to go on holiday, every year
  4. Inspire and enable 100% of our team to volunteer every year

This will support us in our declaration to:

  • Prepare a Climate Action Plan within the next 12 months
  • Annually report on progress against interim and long-term targets, as well as actions taken
  • To make sure climate action is consistent across the industry, we will align our plan with five shared pathways (measure, decarbonise, regenerate, collaborate, finance)
  • Inform contacts and networks about activities connected to Tourism Declares and/or the Glasgow Declaration
  • Work collaboratively and constructively with other Tourism Declaration members and/or signatories
