  • "Oak Cottage in Pendra Loweth is a nice property with huge potential but is let down by a lack of general maintenance and upkeep."

On arrival our first impressions were good, although the fixtures, fittings and furniture appeared a little dated it was well decorated and well equipped. However, on closer inspection the cracks appeared; quite literally on the kitchen floor which had several cracked and loose tiles. It was also evident that it had only had a surface clean leaving enough cobwebs to do Miss Haversham proud. Firstly though, on our arrival we had no hot water which, due to our late arrival we didn’t realise until the following morning. We then had to hunt out the welcome pack ( hidden in the drawer of the TV cabinet ) which stated that the cleaning team should have turned it on the evening prior to our arrival. We didn’t have full hot water until Monday since they obviously hadn’t and it’s an Economy 7 emerson heater so even when we switched it on it wouldn’t start heating the water until midnight. All we could do was use the 1 hour boost switch to get some hot water. It would also be helpful if the welcome pack contained the passcode for the splash pool and gym, which we should have been provided with according to the manager of the site. The kitchen was well equipped with plenty of crockery, cutlery and cookware to cater for six although we did feel that some of the utensils could do with renewing. The oven, microwave and fridge were spotless. The bathrooms were adequate but again showed a lack of maintenance. Both toilet seats were loose as were the taps. We were also unable to lock the main bathroom door which, as we were sharing with teenage grandchildren, meant having to announce the fact that you were using the facilities or having a shower, embarrassing for all concerned. Also there was nowhere to hang clothing in the main bathroom other than the towel rails so it was drape them over the toilet or a quick towel clad dash to the bedroom to get dressed. A non slip mat in the bath would make it safer as it was very slippery when showering. The bedrooms are adequately furnished for this type of property although a little more storage in the downstairs twin would have been appreciated. The bed in the main bedroom however left a lot to be desired. It is very low and showing signs of wear and tear and for people like my husband who has minor mobility issues it was difficult to get out of/up from. The mattress has also seen better days as has the bedding. The quilt cover was thin with wear and had quite a few old stains present; some of which looked like old blood. The sitting room had adequate seating but six adult sized people would find it a bit of a squash. There is a good sized TV and once the kids found they could log into their favourite channels they were happy. The saving grace of this property, and the reason we chose it, was the large conservatory where the only downfall were the broken footstool, the wobbly leg on the coffee table and the hanging gardens of Babylon growing out of the conservatory roof. The conservatory door led to a very disappointing patio area where it would have been nice to sit with our morning coffee or an evening drink; but with large weeds and grass growing between the paving slabs, overgrown shrubs taking up about 2 feet of the patio and a poorly maintained picnic table covered in moss it pretty much spoils the use of the area, which is a shame since all the surrounding properties look to have well maintained patio areas. The barbecue was filthy and has not been cleaned for a while with the cooking rack so rusty it was unusable. The bbq tools, when we found them in the kitchen cupboard, don’t look to have been cleaned as the spatula was caked in grease. Needless to say, we didn’t have a barbecue. On reading through the comments on trip advisor and cornishcottageholidays.co.uk quite a few of our observations are brought up regularly so it’s not just us nit picking but a general theme. As this is in June, well before the main letting season I wouldn’t have expected quite as many minor faults or niggles. But then again if you’re not told about them you can’t repair and most of these faults would take minutes to sort out. To sum up this could be a very very nice property and despite the niggles we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and if the owners were to update a few things (a new mattress for instance) and improve their general upkeep we would book again.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, we have taken your comments on board, and can confirm that all maintenance issues mentioned are being dealt with. We have never had a lock on the main bathroom door and have not had any issues with this in the past. Also, it's worth pointing out that the bed in the main bedroom is less that 2 years old. The maintenance of the patio has also been addressed along with the picnic table, and on a final note the BBQ has been replaced. Property Owner

  • "We had a fabulous family holiday in Falmouth in Oak Cottage."

The location of the cottage was perfect for access to the beach and main Cornwall attractions. The grounds were very well maintained, dog friendly and a beautiful setting. The facilities were perfect as well. The kids loved the plunge pool and playground. The cottage had everything we needed and was very spacious. The only improvement needed is the lounge area sofa and carpet could do with an end of season clean. We’ll definitely be back!

Perhaps the only issue being the shower over the bath maybe a non slip shower mat and wall rail could be considered to improve access for us with mobility issues. That said great time would recommend.

  • "Site was was quiet and well maintained with good facilities."

However the cottage was very tired with poor quality mattresses. When we arrived the The cottage was very dirty and we had to spend the first few hours cleaning. We also had to wash all the crockery as a high number were dirty! We were shocked at the number of cobwebs in very obvious areas - no excuse! The furniture in the conservatory was dreadful and smelt damp. I would not return to this cottage as none of us had a good night sleep for the whole week and clearly COVID cleaning protocols were definitely not observed.

  • "The mattress on the double bed needs upgrading."

It is very thin, and caused me some back ache. The TV in the lounge needs to be bigger. Difficult to watch from the sofa, and couldn't read any words on the TV from the sofa. Didn't watch much TV, but we did want to watch the highlights of the Olympics. Toilet roll holder in downstairs bathroom needs refixing on wall, loose, falls out. Some of the windows in the conservatory need replacing, glass blown. Nice cottage in a lovely location, just needs a bit on investment

We would like to thank you for your feedback which we take seriously. We will be looking at the decoration, furnishings and equipment in the property in the next few weeks. The toilet roll holder was fixed as soon as it was reported. Planned work to the conservatory will be carried out at the beginning of the New Year. We are glad that you enjoyed the cottage and its location. Property Owner

  • "The house is in a beautiful location among a very smart and well- maintained estate in landscaped surroundings and gardens."

It is spacious and warm with an abundance of kitchen tools, cutlery, glasses, crockery etc. The only weakness is the state of the conservatory windows, as about a dozen of the double glazing units have failed and are full of condensation. This hits you as soon as you walk in the building and detracts from your overall impression of the house. Needs putting right!

The weather helped of course! The house was clean and had all we needed. My only issue was the bed wasn't very comfortable but that might just be me and my dodgy back. Falmouth is lovely, lots of things to do, and so dog friendly everywhere. We had a meal in the bar on our last night and I can honestly say it was the best meal out we've had in years. It's so easy to book through Sykes and I'm sure we'll be going again next year. Highly recommended.

  • "This cottage is fantastically equipped but could have been cleaner."

Unfortunately lots of the double glazed windows have failed with condensation between the glass panes which makes the property look a little tired. The site is beautifully kept. The bar/cafe is very over priced with no atmosphere so was therefore not really used. Having said this I would return to this property. It is perfectly placed for Falmouth and surrounding areas.

  • "The cottage needs a deep clean and some maintenance."

The upstairs toilet seat needs fixing, as does the cold tap in the bathroom which drips. The kitchen isn’t very well equipped; no plastic bowls/cutlery for kids, couldn’t find a jug or any oven gloves. No dishcloth provided and only one spare bin bag - like self catering of old! The freezer in the fridge needs defrosting; water constantly drips down into the fridge so all the food gets wet which is really irritating. The Vac was completely blocked and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned out for months, so we had to sort this out before being able to use it. The holiday park is great and the grounds are lovely; Oak Cottage just needs some care and attention.
