  • "The fact that I didn’t score top marks for each of the categories didn’t detract from our enjoyment."

The location of this cottage is amazing if you like peace and quiet . If you want a ‘quick pop to the shop ‘ maybe not as good although there are plenty of supermarkets about 20 minutes away ( by car). Being in the forest at this time of year was a joy . Lots of opportunities to park and walk for hour. The garden is on a couple of levels with some interesting nooks and crannies . It felt completely secure for our dog to investigate. Surrounding towns / villages are very dog friendly and we were made welcome everywhere. (Try Alex Gooch in Monmouth). The cottage itself had all that we needed but for me the sofas were a bit tired and didn’t offer my dodgy back enough support . I realise that is something personal to me and maybe other guests would be fine. At home we rarely get the opportunity to watch television so it was a bonus to have a television that worked as described in the holiday listing . Very often, listings say ‘smart tv’ but channels are very restricted . However this was not the case at Anvil Cottage.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed review. We found it very helpful. We will be getting new sofas. Property Owner

  • "The property was well equipped and we had a lovely stay with our two dogs."

The property is in a good position for the forest of Dean with its splendid walks. Just across from Anvil the steep footpath will give you beautiful views but is unsuitable for dogs unless you can lift your dog over styles. We all had a great holiday.

We are so pleased you had a great time. Property Owner

  • "The property was lovely and in a really peaceful area, perfect for unwinding in."

To improve it further, the bathroom needs a shelf. Also, the soft furnishings on the settees smelt stale. They either need replacing or refreshing a lot. A seating area/ small patio outside the front door would enhance the look of the property and allow people to still sit out in the sun when it was lost on the garden due to the trees.

We are delighted that you enjoyed being in our cottage. Thanks for your helpful comments. For shelving in the bathroom, we can make more room by removing jars and toilet rolls from two of the four shelves. Sorry about the sofas, we always replace covers for guests, but will freshen up the cushions. We don't leave chairs out in front of the cottage because of cars parking or turning round, but are happy for guests to move chairs from the main patio or secret garden to catch the last of the sun. The eerie caverns and ancient caves of Clearwell are close by, as are the Gloucestershire Way and Offa's Dyke Path for wonderful walks. Close by, Symonds Yat boasts natural scenery and straddles the beautiful River Wye with its magnificent limestone rock, popular with climbers, and well known for its viewpoint. Visit the historic town of Monmouth, which offers a fusion of elegant Georgian mansions and Victorian courtyards, or the lovely town of Ross-on-Wye with its timbered Tudor houses and delightful riverside walks, both home to excellent shops, pubs and restaurants.
