Sound Cottage

I had a lovely stay at this cottage.

It was beautifully clean and well appointed and cosy. It is so old and traditional and has a lovely welcoming feel to it, is beautifully warm and snug even during a storm and Michael makes you feel very welcome too.. Slept there with only my dog for company most of the week and felt totally safe, able to relax and enjoy the genuine solitude without ever feeling either too isolated or in any way overlooked. A rare find. The cottage itself and the garden are beautifully maintained but the windy private road down is getting very bad after all the bad weather, so that is one thing I'd warn about, especially if you plan on going in and out alot. The potholes are deep and some are are hard to avoid. . Hopefully all the lane's residents will come together and get it done soon. Also make sure to bring wellies to access the beach with ease!

Home from home relaxing and quiet place. Warm despite the storm that came in but we felt very safe. We were brought candles and a torch. Would love to come back.

I don't usually leave reviews, but on sound cottage it just had to be done.

.. don't let the short track put you off, it was fine, just take your time, what's at the end will be well worth it... what a gem of a place. A spotless and comfortable cottage, a very warm, welcoming and relaxing place to rest and relax. thank you for the extras that was left for us on arrival, very thoughtful. slept well, even had electric blankets, nice touch, plenty of hot water, a very well equipped cottage, we wanted for nothing... would highly recommend, The two donkeys were adorable, lovely to meet the caretaker and have a chat, nice to know he was around if needed. would love to come back. Thank you again for letting sound cottage out.

The cottage is so cozy with fabulous views.

Being so close to the sea is wonderful. We brought our pet dog and she loved it. The house is well equipped. We loved it.

This was my 3rd visit to Sound Cottage - it never fails to amaze me how beautiful the cottage and the views are - the cottage has absolutely everything you need to make your stay feel like home Michael the caretaker is available any time should you need him I’m already booked to return , it’s a beautiful piece of heaven

Super bien placé pour découvrir Achill Island et Nephin National Park entre autres..... Nous avons eu l'immense chance d'y être durant le Scoil Acla, du coup pleins de musique et des gens hypers sympas ! Et un immense merci à Mickael et Mary qui ont été parfaits !

We have just spent a week at this fabulous cottage.

This was my second visit and my children and grandchildren’s first. The cottage is so homely you do not want to leave. Views spectacular, and being greeted everyday by Sheila and Mary ( donkeys) is lovely. We have booked again August and next May , it really is the perfect holiday The cottage has everything you need , spotlessly clean and well looked after - updates since last visit include heating and sofas which are lovely and comfy. I would recommend Sound Cottage to everyone, thank you Michael for looking after it and Patrick for renting it out to us - see you in August

We really enjoyed our holiday at Sound Cottage, gorgeous place, lovely cottage, really clean, easy to get hold of the caretaker if you needed any info, it was a really relaxing holiday and we would have liked it to have been even longer!

Our kids loved the swing in the garden and the bunk beds and the donkeys in the field next door. I just loved the get away from it all feel and just the feel of the cottage. It was lovely.

Absolutely beautiful cottage in stunning location but the access road is horrendous and there is no way to avoid all the deep pot holes.

Cottage was immaculately clean & contained everything that you could need but really needs some TLC (furniture very uncomfortable and past its sell by date, fridge door fell off, wobbly taps in en suite to name a few) We will be back but not until the road has been repaired.

I have just spent a week at Sound Cottage with my sister , we loved the views , feeding the donkeys each morning and the area itself.

Sound cottage is a lovely quaint cottage, with everything you need provided. It was spotlessly clean when we arrived. Plenty of games / dvd’s as tv doesn’t always work due to no signal. The cottage has everything you need , hair dryers, slow cooker, every kitchen utensil you can think of, George Forman grill, plenty of thick duvets for when it is cold, washing machine and dryer. We did find the sofa and chairs were past their best , very uncomfortable especially when weather is bad and you are in for the day. Also the lane down to the cottage is really bad with pot holes, we hired a car so was concerned about damaging it every time we went out. Apart from the seating and lane everything was great , I would recommend Sound Cottage to anyone wanting to stay on Achill , I for one will definitely be back

The couch and armchairs need replacing, the fridge needs replacing.

The road down to the cottage needs potholes filled in. The cottage is fine if these things were sorted.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, both human and canine, however, some general maintenance needs to be attended to along with some furniture replacement.

The seating furniture in the sitting room is very cumbersome and passed its best for comfort wise. Otherwise, everything worked very well. All possible kitchen items were provided. We would certainly rebook!

Easy access to Achill Island and its wonderful surroundings. A pleasure to have the donkeys around!

Excellent and peaceful spot the light in this part of the world is fantastic.

Facilities wise The hot water was fantastic, fast and reliable which is hugely appreciated with teenagers in tow. We had just the break ŵe needed. There was lots of information provided in the packs which helped us plan our stay. Donkeys for neighbours provided a different backdrop to the usual...

We absolutely loved our stay in Sound Cottage.

Such a perfect location. If you're looking for a holiday where you get so relaxed you find yourself asking' What day is today??!' then this is the place. Our dog Jimmy was in 7th heaven too.. can't recommend this place enough. The caretakers were brilliant also. 10 out of 10.

Sound Cottage is the last house on a very long lane.

right on the shore. It is a beautiful 100 year old cottage which has just the right mix of character and modern facilities. Michael and Mary are the caretakers for the property and they do a fabulous job. We were so comfortable with the stove and cosy sofas while the wind howled outside on the first two nights. But we were also blessed with sunshine and could sit outside and watch all the birds, feed the donkeys or watch the tide. If you are looking tranquility, cosiness, nature with more than a splash of bona fide Achill then Sound Cottage will tick all the boxes.

We stayed at three different cottages during our trip to Ireland and everyone said Sound Cottage was their favourite.

It has everything you could wish for and more. It was far more beautiful than we were expecting. The Cottage itself was extremely comfortable, had everything we needed and more, but the view - wow! it was truly amazing, we spent many hours just sitting and taking in the scenery and took lots of photos. The icing on the cake was the donkeys, beautiful donkeys, who were always nearby and very friendly. This is a place where we saw people taking strolls out to see the beautiful scenery, but we had the honour of staying there for 5 lovely days. Thank you so much and we will definitely be back xx

We had the most wonderful time on Achill.

The cottage is clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. The location is wonderful and a decent distance from other properties. We loved the garden and our girls loved the swing and especially loved feeding the two nosey donkeys over the fence. I sat having my breakfast one day watching a heron catch fish and seals on the flats as the tide receded. It really is a place to relax and Achill is a special place.

This is a beautiful cottage with a spectacular view.

The house is comfortable and retains it's old charm. It would be hard for anyone not to unwind and relax in such senic, peacful place with the added bonus of the friendly donkeys. I hope to return soon. Thank you.

We had a lovely time at Sound Cottage.

The cottage is lovely. The view of the shoreline and the mountains is beautiful. We explored the island with friends and it is a magnificent place. Many thanks for a wonderful retreat away. Noel& Carmel Horan

This is an old, remote cottage.

2 of the 3 bedrooms had a damp smell. The bed in the main bedroom was very, very poor. It was extremely creaky and not comfortable at all. Electricity worked, there was a landline, however no WiFi and the hot water and heating was very difficult to regulate. The cottage is at the end of a 1 km one lane road with 2 other cottages. There are maybe 3 places to pass should you meet another car. You have to pray that you don’t meet another car. The lane joins a two-way road which was busy and you have no visibility on what traffic is coming. If a mirror was mounted on the other side of the road, at least you would not have to take your life into your hands each time. We had 2 close calls during our stay and the anxiety caused by this was unwanted during our holiday.

Wonderful cottage.

Greatly enjoyed our stay. Beautiful views over the Sound. Fun walks on the Strand beachcombing. We would have booked again for September 2020 but not available. Will try again in a couple of years.

Sound Cottage is in the most tranquil of surroundings with nothing but peace and quiet all around.

An excellent place to escape and relax. The best cottage I've ever stayed in. Very homely.

It was spotless upon arrival and in the most spectacular setting.

This cottage was warm, cozy, and in a great location.

Well equipped kitchen, with lots of nice extras throughout the home. I appreciated the charm and character, and all the reading material, games, movies, and cd's for rainy days, aso well as a lovely host. If there was one recommendation for improvement I would say it would be the corner area of the garden by the donkeys. If it was cleared it would enhance the view.

A Magical Step Back in Time ' Our stay at Sound Cottage was wonderful.

It is perfectly located to the many amazing beaches and hill walks on Achill Island. Ballycroy National Park, Westport and south Mayo are all close by and easy day trips as well. The views are breathtaking and indescribable. The beauty of Achill would be enough to merit a stay at Sound Cottage, but the home connects you to this stunning landscape. The Cottage is quietly situated on a small bit of land reaching into Achill Sound and less than 100 meters from the beach. It is an impossibly romantic place to stay, the stone walls, picturesque windows, the wood stove burning softly and the still quiet that engulfs you. It is well fitted and the recent addition of the large back bedroom is perfectly done and makes it well suited for a family or ideal for a traveling couple. Shopping, pubs, music and restaurants are close by. One of the most appreciated features at the cottage was the full laundry (washer/dryer). Michael and Mary were wonderful hosts and provided everything we required. With a small flock of sheep surrounding and a donkey (Neddy) wanting to be feed carrots, you will feel like you have stepped back in time and will not want to reset the clock when it is time to go.

July 2017 - We very much enjoyed our stay at Sound Cottage.

It was an ideal location to stay 'home' and relax and perfectly situated to explore Achill and mainland Mayo. Our two large dogs (one a wolfhound) had no problems with Ned or the sheep and there was plenty of room in the cottage for us and them. We had the added joy of a hare in the garden. Achill is a magical and beautiful island with a wonderful welcome from th elocal people for visitors. We will return to Achill and to Sound Cottage.
