"Amazing period property with lovely period panelled walls in the living room."
Everything that you could need fir a break away from home.
Even though this is on a working farm apart from the odd dog bark we were not disturbed by any other noises, it was peaceful and relaxing.
The wooden floors creaked quite a lot but fir a house of this age it is nothing you wouldn't expect, in fact it was great to have those original features rather than just laminate like other places we have been.
Only a coupke of downsides, we had a small issue with flies in both double bedrooms, they seemed to gather on the windows during the day and we had to waft them outside each evening when we returned. Again a working farm so to be expected I guess, just a little annoying. The shower in the main bathroom never ran very hot so we ended up using the ensure most of the time too.
If you are looking for a great period place to stay I would definitely recommend it. The very narrow roads and lanes make it an adventure too.

"Property was clean and welcoming, beds comfortable, showers good and property is in a quiet location with easy access to the shops, coast and countryside - loved the area."
Lots of info about the area included, which was great.
Would've liked a pint of milk on arrival rather than plastic sachets - small point - and a few more drink mats so we could keep some in the lounge to protect tables there.
The only real issue for us was that we found catering for six (one with a gluten free diet) quite difficult with only a two-ringed hob - a normal four-ringed hob would be much better for a property sleeping six. I appreciate that a Rayburn was also available, but that was a step too far for us!

"Upon arrival the exterior appears more tired than the photos - though not out of keeping with a farm building that is this old."
There is a raised terrace which was a bit of a sun trap to the right of the entrance and a lawned area to the left - albeit the lawn is smaller than the perspective of the photos suggests and slightly sloping, so not really usable. The rest of the outside space you have access to is essentially the car park which is shared with the owner.
The kitchen units are relatively new with granite work surfaces - though not really enough food prep space if six are staying and we struggled a bit with only two rings on the hob. Likewise a larger toaster (only two slots) would make sense. There is a Rayburn which isn’t on during Summer months (though can be turned on). The dining chairs shown on the photo are not what’s actually in the kitchen - the chairs that are there are old and uncomfortable (the seat pads are worn out and two of the back splats are broken).
The crockery is good quality (Denby) and there is a good range of utensils. The cutlery is cheaper and prone to bending. The microwave works but needs to be replaced as it’s very rusty inside - we didn’t understand how it came to be left like that. We found the glass liner of the cafetière cracked.
The bedlinen and towels are all white and clean. The bathrooms are modern with plenty of hot water for showers. There was an issue early on in our stay with the macerator toilet which the owner sorted out quickly.
There was no welcome pack which was a missed opportunity - especially considering how passionately the owner wrote about what his farm produces and the encouragement to use local traders (we did use the farm shop on the way to Kingsbridge).
Thank you for your in depth and boring critique.
We have learned that you think things are different from what you thought the photos look like and the lawn is sloping so you were unable to use it, but you don’t say what you were going to use it for??
It looks old because it is many centuries old. Perhaps you were hoping for a Premier Inn not a grade two star listed property first inhabited somewhere in the late twelfth century AD?
Put the toast in the toaster, then when the toast is done put more in if you want more.
I fixed the problem with the toilet after you put something down it that you shouldn’t have ( there is a sign to help which you didn’t read).
I replaced the cafetière you broke ( you blamed it on the previous guests).
The cutlery was not cheap when I bought it ( no I didn’t get it from the pound shop).
The farm produces grain, what were you hoping for, a hundredweight of barley?

"On a positive note, the property was clean and equipped with everything you could need and the bathrooms were lovely."
However, first impressions of the property on entering was that it was very damp. Also, on reading the information manual, we discovered that there were additional restrictions for dogs that were not communicated at the time of booking.
Dogs were not allowed on the furniture and were not to be left alone in the property at any time, which we fully respected. However, dogs were also only allowed in the kitchen and living room which resulted in spending the week sleeping downstairs on a very uncomfortable sofa. Our dogs are used to sleeping in their beds in our bedroom therefore leaving them downstairs alone was not an option for us. If we had known about these additional restrictions at time of booking we would have cancelled.
Further to this every night dogs were barking through the night and into the early hours of the morning. We believe they were either roaming the propery or located in the stables directly behind the annex. Our last evening they were barking from around 11pm to around 3am which as we were up early the next morning for a 9 hour drive back home was really frustrating.
We appreciate that we were staying on a working farm so expected to hear animal noises but it was more like sleeping in Battersea Dogs Home.
The beds were extremely uncomfortable which did not allow for a restful night either.
We believe the advert for the property needs to be updated to include the additional dog restrictions and also that it is likely dogs will be barking during the night.
South Wing is enjoyed by many different guests over the course of the holiday season so dogs are not allowed upstairs for good reason. The guests who stayed in the property following your visit would probably not have appreciated dog hair in their beds and the cleaner would have been hard stretched to leave the property in the clean and tidy condition which you say you found it in. The downstairs has hard floors which can easily be cleaned the upstairs is carpeted.
You ignored the request to keep dogs off the furniture and also allowed your dogs to defecate on the lawn which my children play on because you couldn’t be bothered to walk the very short distance to a lovely big grassy field.
My dogs do indeed occasionally bark but had they barked from 11pm until 3am I would definitely have noticed and addressed the issue, so I very much doubt that is true.
The mattresses on the beds are specified by Coast and Country Cottages and are high quality so I am sceptical of your point.

The central heating was on, the log burner lit, the Rayburn turned up and the weather was mild and it was not sufficient?

"First off all we where told there would be wood supplied and there was not!"
Then two days into our hoilday my children aged 5 where playing in there rooms to find the owner had been in the attic and caused a water leak which poured through the ceilings onto my children causing damaged to there belongings.
They had no where to sleep that night.
We then gave the owner the chance to fix the problem leaving the house through the day. To find the electricity went out when ever it pleased.
We left after 4 days because our hoilday was simply ruined. The owner told us he would refund us.
3 weeks later he has refused to refund us.
The booking agency have closed the door on us so we will be now cliaming damages through our soiltors.
We left the house on good terms. Expecting our refund that was agreed.
Don't not book with this company!! Or or this property! Horrible service.
Thank you for your feedback. We received a call from you to say that you had arrived back to the property to find a leak, so we surprised to read that you were in when this occurred. We offered to re-house you but you declined as you were leaving on the Monday due to work commitments and were quite happy to move the mattresses into another room. It has central heating but we had no heating it was turned off there was a log burner but no wood provided.A few days in we hadn’t got any water with no explanation from owners it was off from that evening from 10pm till early the next morning about 8 45.we got in touch with sykescottages they said they would try to find out what had happened. The owner's left fruit potatoes and eggs which was nice but it would have been nice to have had some contact about some of our concerns.
Unfortunately you did not contact Sykes as soon as you noticed the water had stopped. You waited until 8.30am the next morning before calling them. The water was back on within 15 minutes, the boost pump had tripped. I can only apologise for the inconvenience caused by this minor issue however if I don’t know about a problem I cannot rectify it.
Similarly as far as I can make out you did not turn the heating on, the instructions are in a folder on the kitchen table, nor did you contact Sykes to ask about the heating. It was warm weather that week and I did not expect you to need the central heating so it was off.

"We were disappointed with this accommodation."
The property has very small living area although the upstairs was great.
Some of the kitchen equipment wasn't clean. We found dirty pans in the oven and the cupboard under the kettle smells like a school home economics room. I am not sure how the leg on the ironing board could be so bent!
For a property which was supposedly dog friendly there was a great list of things that you mustn't do and stipulation that you must clean property where your pet had been on departure. We did this so not sure what the £25 fee for him was for! Also, given that presumably the owners knew we had a dog would it be too difficult to leave suitable directions for dog walks rather than the 'leave us a note' and we will get back to you system that was in place.
We did miss the call from the office to check that everything was ok and appreciate this level of customer service. We wouldn't stay again nor recommend. Sorry!

I would just echo what others have said, which would be that there are only 2 cooking hobs which means you have to think about how you're preparing food (if you're not eating out).
Then it would have been nice to have had a chair in the sitting room so that you don't have to sit in 3 side by side on two sofas.

There is no enclosed yard to let our dog out I think this needs to be mentioned in the description.
A soiled nappy was found under a chest of draws in the twin room , god knows how long that had been there for .
Considering the owners share the same house it would have been nice if they had took the time to interact and ask if we had any concerns or just to introduce themselves would have been nice .

"Accommodation was spacious and very well kept."
Lovely bedrooms and bathrooms. Only slight negative would be cooking facilities and kitchen cupboards. Did have a large oil fired Aga, but you need to have experience with Aga's. There was also a an induction hob and cooker which was also difficult to operate. Although kitchen was spacious, there is a lack of cupboard and preparation space for food, especially if you have young children and are eating in most of the time.
The only other small negative would be that there is no rear garden to access and the garden and patio photos as shown in the property details, face east/south east and if you do stay in, in the evenings you don't get any late afternoon evening sun.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us, regarding your stay at South Wing. We have looked to get further instructions on using the Aga and Induction hob. We do hope you choose to book with us again.

"This is a really lovely house, reasonably well equipped, with Denbyware crockery of plenty."
We would suggest a larger hob as 2 rings for five people was a nuisance, we love cooking on holiday maybe we are the exception, and another large saucepan would complete the set, but all the equipment was good. As usual when the furniture was to accommodate six people two sofas mean two rows of three, another armchair would stop that happening, but beautiful sofas. Dining furniture was great albeit chairs a bit heavy, but plenty of room. Bathrooms great and bedrooms comfortable especially the beds. The house was lovely and warm at all times with plenty of room to give five adults plenty of space. Although it is a working farm there wasn’t much noise to show that, although the cockerel did make one of our party jump! We would recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet place to stay, but easy to get to both Dartmouth and Salcombe.

The west wing is obviously an old property and one would normally expect maybe to smell a bit of damp and see a bit of wear and tear. However, the place was immaculate and without doubt a 10 out of 10 for cleanliness. Beds were comfortable as was the lovely leather sofas. kitchen knives and pans were all very high quality and all in all the accommodation was well presented. Anyone wishing to stay during the winter months would be advised to light the stove in the lounge as this room became quite cold when the temperature dropped. The adjoining property has a very lovely lady there who is most helpful, unlike her mother in law who made it clear that dog walking in nearby tracks was a non starter as she owned them, although no signs were there to tell us this was the case. The area also had many good restaurants and places to visit. Dartmouth and Salcombe being two of them. All in all good value and a nice place for a stay.

"A few thoughts re this holiday letting."
First off, we certainly enjoyed our stay there over the three days we were there. A few pointers for the owners to take into consideration. First, there was no leaflet about how to use either the Rayburn or the hob. Second, there was a freezer under the stairs, behind the ironing board. We weren't sure if that worked or not. We didn't find it straight away but were surprised when we did. Third, there were no details of where to put all the rubbish when we left the property. We found some wheelie bins in an open barn but the details on those bins of what they took did not coincide with what was written on the large plastic refuse bags that were left under the sink. We separated the rubbish as best we could. Fourth, we never saw anyone to speak to about the property. The owners were obviously there in the main house but never made contact with us at all. Fifth, in the twin room, the door that connects that room to the owners' accommodation does not seal all the way around and so the light was shining through into the the twin room during the night. Also, our grandsons who were sleeping in that room could hear the noise coming from the main residence. Finally, on our last morning a local shop had delivered some groceries to the main property and left them by the main front door. For anyone staying longer it would be good to know that a grocery delivery service is available.
