• "Nicest hosts you could ever wish for ."

  The cottage is fabulous , old and characterful and if you want total peace (except for the daily parade of sheep or cows past the gate ) and privacy then do book . You do need to be a confident and competent driver to get up the single lane track . The Tarka trail and walks are on the doorstep but not accessible with a dog due to livestock in field including a bull but so many places to Visit within a 30 minute drive . We had a lovely stay

• "We knew the cottage was on a farm but did not realise you had to drive through a very mucky farmyard every time, and down a very long narrow lane, we met a feed lorry at the narrow bridge and had to back a long way up the narrow twisty lane as far as the farm."

  The nearest shop is quite a way away and having to cook our own food daily due to my medical condition the small fridge and small icebox proved to be a bit of a problem ,also the lighting in the kitchen was just wall lights and not bright enough to see to cook properly especially with the very small windows .As a very old quaint cottage it was very warm, but needs better lighting all through.

• "Very nice & helpful owners."

  Certainly 'away from it all'. Adjacent to a working hill farm. Lovely wrap-round garden offering sun & shade. Lane walking on the doorstep though v steep so really need to drive to footpaths ~ and there are many lovely walks relatively nearby in this area of North Devon. From our perspective not the best stay for a dog who is active and needs walks on the doorstep. A main North Devon trail is literally on that doorstep but the wild cattle are evident and a potential hazard.

• "The cottage was comfortable and cosy, despite the chilly weather, and the cake and tea on arrival was a nice touch."

  The location was very peaceful, it was some distance from the main road so it did take a while to get anywhere but it was good to be able to walk from the door. A few minor suggestions for improvements: although comfortable, the double bed was very creaky so we kept waking each other up, a larger washing up bowl would be good (the sink is quite large but the bowl was tiny), the dehumidifier is probably too small for the space as it needed emptying several times over the course of our 3 night stay (we have a Meaco 20l one which is very effective and doesn't leak) and the heater in the twin bedroom didn't seem to work (although we didn't actually need it in the end as the stove was very effective). Overall we had a relaxing stay and would recommend the cottage.

  Now that the rain has stopped on Exmoor, after 5 months, we have been able to take the dehumidifier out of the Cottage. During the Winter months, a 17th century (or more) old Cottage needs to be kept heated and dry. We have oiled the joints of the King sized bed - happy thought!. It is true that the Cottage is out of the city and "some distance from the main road", but hearing nothing on any evening but the breeze, the stream, and sheep and cows is why we are here, and why we thought you might find being here as much of a pleasure as we do. Thank you for your suggestions for the Cottage; we would look forward to your visit again. Property Owner

  This property can take you back 200years, if you want that, all mod cons, washing machine, microwave,constant hot water and heating,, TV and everything else 21st century,,but if you switch off mod cons and your fones, iPads,,no satnav, and take in the surroundings and location,it's perfect to get away from modern day and relax and chill,, the accommodation at least 400yr old cottage,, you can feel it,,magical,we had a great time here great access to nth Devon coast,,2teenagers and a dog with us,,if we get chance to return by ourselves would be fantastic,,don't have to go to new Zealand for enchanted forest,it's all here epic scenery/landscape, lovely people,,thank you Madeleine and Johnathan(hosts)for great experience and information,,hope you get your Ireland journey in,, it's a must,,tell Johnathan to take you ASAP,, and take your time and photo everything,,it's worth it,, great accommodation,, recommended for photographers,writers, walkers,dogs,children,and mostly for leaving the rat race behind,, and just chilling

• "We loved our stay at this remote, very quite, beautiful 400 year old cottage."

  The kitchen was very well equipped and easy to prepare meals in. The cottage was lovely and clean, warm and cosy. We had milk and home made cake waiting for us after our long journey, which was very much appreciated and also a call to make sure all was ok. Madeleine and Johnathan were perfect hosts. Local supermarkets within 30 minutes drive. Lots of walks, beaches, shops and activities to do within 30 minutes drive. Also walks just outside the cottage. The quietest place we have stayed, apart from the cows and cockerels which added to the country atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

• "We had a great time at this lovely cottage in spectacular and tranquil part of Exmore."

  But it is also only a 30 minute drive to all the coastal attractions of N.Devon. The cottage was very cosy (oil "log" burner). It has all the old features and the restoration of the cottage must nave been a labour of love. This was our second visit and we will be coming back again. This is quite an exceptional property. The owners are lovely. They came around to check that all was ok and then left us to it.

• "Lovely cosy cottage warm and welcoming."

  Madaline and johnathan came and introduced themselves, and answered any questions we had. The cottage was lovely and clean everything we needed was there to be able to cook for my family. The only problem I would say was as it was wet and muddy the farmyard you had to drive through was uneven and bumpy, could put people off, we where fine in our ford ranger, we would definitely go again and rebook for next year.

  The hosts are very welcoming lovely people always there if you need them but not intrusive. Upon arrival we were welcomed with a beautiful tea tray and a delicious homemade cake by the host lovely touch after a long journey. The cottage has everything you need. We will definitely be returning to this little piece of heaven. Very dog friendly and our little boy had the best time. Highly recommend this gorgeous cottage.

  we were there during a very warm week so the cottage was an excellent place just to chill, around the cottage and farm,.visited by owners on arrival who were very welcoming and were only to happy to assist with any problems. visitors book ,maps and alot of information about local area on hand. had such a great week because of great weather and beautiful cottage. great for dog owners like ourselves who have a very active dog. but care needed because of location of cottage to farm and animals ,who were an absolute delight to be around. highly recommend and would definetely visit again. maybe a bit to remote for some but not a problem for us. Stunning.

  Thank you both for the cake and china on arrival to your most beautiful storybook cottage,I am sixty five years and I have found the home that I want to live the rest of my life in, if I win the lottery Madeline and Jonathan, I hope you will let us become your neighbours by allowing me to purchase this most beautiful cottage from you, even Lucy and willow have sulked since we returned to our beautiful home. You are wonderful people,very caring, thank you for the cream, I wii inform you if it works.The garden is beautiful, huge, and Lucy the tortoise was in her elements with willow carefully watching her whilst she was on her 10 metre lead, so she couldn’t disappear through the hedges.The furnishing is as it should be,making you feel warm and comfortable,,and the kitchen is beautiful, and the bedrooms very much to our liking,and the bathroom is well appointed. What ca I say except thank you so much from Enid Blytons five from your cottage , but only one thing we ask you ,please if you would get the rolling brush working on your hoover,because we felt so guilty we coul not clean the carpet as was possible, but perhaps you don’t know Madeline, I should have said something. Looking forward to our next visit to your beautiful cottage and perhaps we will carry on our talks over a brandy, and we can visit Jonathan’s workshop as we missed it this time, good luck with the auction of the Indian canoe,regards to you from us all,Wyndham,lynda,Jonathan, willow and Lucy.

• "We had a lovely week in a wonderfully quirky cottage."

  The owners came to welcome us but were not intrusive at all although only a phone call away if we needed them. My only criticism is that I wish at least part of the large garden could have been dog secure especially as the cottage is on a farm. This is something we have experienced before and feel that if dogs are accepted they should be safe. That said the cottage was wonderful

• "Whitefield Cottage is a wonderful Devon Cottage, set amidst a farmyard setting, it is remote, but of it's peace & quiet you're after, then Whitefield is just the Staycation."

  The Hosts, Madeleine & Jonathan, are extremely friendly & welcoming, although you don't really see or hear from them. They keep a really good property & are willing to share information about the nearby areas etc. I am currently building a new house in a nearby village & this stop over was just perfect for me & George, my 3 year old Chocolate Lab. The walking, even locally, for people & dogs is good, sorry, fantastic!!! A big thank you to my Hosts.

• "The location of the cottage was excellent, and the cottage itself charming."

  Would like to comment though that it is in my opinion excessively expensive to change the date of changeover from a Friday to a Saturday and I had not realised when booking that it was quite so much more. A case of buyer beware, seemed unfair as the cottage would still have been available for a short break in the following week. Not the fault of the owners but a Sykes cottage policy I think.

• "We had a lovely week at Whitefield Cottage, it's a really quirky and unique home."

  Jonathan and Madeleine were lovely but not at all intrusive. We found the cottage comfortable and clean, there was plenty of hot water and everything worked! It was nice that so many of the basic things needed were in the cottage (things like bin bags, cloths, washing up liquid etc.). The cottage is off the beaten track (which is what we love) but a great base for day trips in North Devon....just make sure you're satnav isn't sending you on long distance routes down single lane tracks! I soon realised the longest route often the best.

• "Much appreciated the friendliness of the owner who came round to see us to make sure we were okay."

  Good to have that local contact. We were greeted with a tea tray with cake and a welcome note which was much appreciated. If it were allowed by the farm owner, directions on the farm buildings pointing us onward towards our cottage would have been encouraging. It is important not to follow the postcode on Tom-Tom because it points 180° in the wrong direction at the final crossroads. Head towards Whitefields on your map and you will be fine. We really appreciated the rural location, far from the madding crowd. Yet close enough to visit local beauty spots. Spacious lawns behind the house in which to enjoy the sunset . Excellent walks and cycles in the area. (Bring your ebike unless you are super young and fit!)

  The booking process was easy and straight forward and the pleasant helpful staff followed up our enquiries promptly. The lady was happy to ring the owner to get additional information and got back to us almost immediately.All in all a great service! WHITEFIELD COTTAGE REVIEW Highly reccomend this charming cottage and its friendly obliging hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed staying here and would definitely book it again if we return to North Devon. The cottage is located in a blissfully peaceful location reached along primrose-studded lanes. We stayed in April and it was just beautiful to awaken to the sound of birdsong and baby lambs. Located right on the edge of Exmoor we also found it an easy drive to coastal attractions eg 25 minutes to Heddon Valley, 35/40 mins to Braunton Burrows/ Saunton Sands. The cottage has lovely original features like the lime plaster, exposed beams and old inglenook fireplace complete with bakers oven on one side. The oil-fired log burner within, looked the part and kept the cottage nicely warm.Theres also a very effective storage heater in the kitchen and wall-mounted electric convector heaters upstairs ( though we didn't need to use these) The cottage was tastefully furnished with comfy beds & sofa and beautiful antique dark wood chairs in the living room It is clean, cosy, comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped with everything you need ( but not rammed with endless useless clutter as we have found elsewhere) . It was great to have coat hooks and plenty of space for shoes in the porch plus a handy hose outside for muddy boots and dogs.We also really appreciated the OS maps and Bradt guidebook. The hedged garden( with handy clothes line) felt really private and we could find a sunny spot at any time of day. The morning sun falls on the porch so we enjoyed having breakfast there on the warmer mornings. Hosts - Madeleine & Jonathan- were extremely thoughtfull and accommodating . It was so nice to arrive to find a homemade cake and posey of fresh flowers from the garden They also left us a good supply of everything we needed (including teabags, milk, sugar a fresh packet of ground coffee and even the oft- forgotten coffee filter papers) so we were,able to brew up and take full advantage of the cake straight away! We really enjoyed our stay in Whitefield.

• "Whitefield Cottage is the real "WOW" factor."

  It is beautiful, spacious and cosy. Set in a lovely garden and on the Tarka trail so great for walkers. Neighbours were cows so very quiet and the occasional Moo. Can come out of the gate and on to Exmoor. Rural and peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves albeit wet and muddy weather and will be going back to the cottage again when the weather is better. Fantastic place.

• "The is a beautiful cottage, it has everything you need and it set in beautiful surroundings."

  It’s has beautiful wooden beams inside the cottage. The cottage is about 40 minutes away from Braunton and Saunton Sands beach. We travelled to a different location each day and it was lovely to come out of the town and back to the peacefulness of the cottage. We spoke to the lovely farmer whilst he was bringing the cows in and He was telling us of places we can visit. The owners are so lovely and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. We took out 9 months baby with us and they were really helpful if we needed anything else.

  It locate in a small beautiful village, and takes about 35-40 min drive to Woolacombe Beach/Saunton Sands. They are dog friendly beaches, spent all day and was very nice to come back to this lovely cottage. Also we went to Valley of Rocks, (about 30 min drive) enjoyed breathtaking scenery. We love to stay there again!!!

  The owners made us feel very welcome and had thought of everything to make the cottage feel like home. The cottage is located in a beautiful rural location within the north Devon countryside which we enjoyed exploring on foot. The cottage itself is beautiful, quirky and cosy. We were especially lucky with the weather and made full use of the lovely surrounding garden, eating outside on many days. Would 100% recommend and will hopefully visit again in the future.

• "We would highly recommend Whitefield Cottage."

  It's a beautiful old cottage, very cosy and well appointed. We visited with our twins (aged 3.5) and the set-up was really good. The cottage is nicely secluded (next to a working farm) and it's so quiet, you feel like you are alone in the country. We were a bit limited by the age of the children, but apparently there are lots of good walks nearby - we saw several packs of ramblers (despite the rain). A massive thanks to the owners (M&J), they were really helpful and kind, thank you for the baking and flowers. We would love to visit again!
