  • "Beautiful holiday home in a stunning setting with friendly helpful owners."

Could do with some work on the drive and lanes because of the recent very wet weather.

Thank you for your kind words about The Shippon & its location David, and for your lovely comments about us as hosts. We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay! We appreciate your feedback regarding access to the property. Just to clarify, what may seem like our "drive" is actually a public lane, and both the lane and the access roads are maintained by Devon County Council, not us. While we'd love to see improvements, this is unfortunately outside of our control. However, we do regularly raise the issue with the Council in the hopes that they will take action. In fact I have been in touch with them again this morning, sharing your feedback on the telephone. As with many rural locations in Devon, the lanes can be narrow and uneven in places, making for trickier navigation at times, depending on the type of vehicle and weather conditions. Most vehicles manage without any issues, but we always recommend that guests take this into account when planning their trip. If you'd like to support our efforts in requesting improvements, you can report any concerns to the Devon Highways Department through their 'Report a Problem' page online. Thank you again for your review - we're so glad you had a great experience overall, and we'd love to welcome you back in the future! Best regards to you & Carol - Sara Property Owner

Where you’ll be staying

HONITON

Ottery St Mary 5.6 miles; Lyme Regis 14.2 miles; Exeter 16.7 miles.

Honiton is a delightful market town in East Devon, with plenty to offer visitors. It lies in the valley of the River Otter and is surrounded by rolling Devon hills, green wooded valleys and plenty of scattered farming villages. Honiton has an attractive High Street stretching almost 2 miles, and lined with individually owned shops, pubs and restaurants. Honiton has been famous for lacemaking since the reign of Elizabeth I and still has a few lacemakers in work today - visitors can see some fine examples of antique lace in the town’s Allhallows Museum. Honiton boasts the only public art gallery in East Devon; the Thelma Hulbert Gallery occupies an attractive Grade I listed Victorian house, and has links with the Hayward Gallery, London. Honiton is only a short drive from the dramatic 20 mile stretch of Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural World Heritage Site. Resorts such as Seaton, Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth are found along this stretch of coastline, and all have much to occupy the visitor. Near to Honiton is the cathedral city of Exeter with plenty of large shops, a wealth of museums, a theatre and fabulous restaurants.

Blackdown Cottage Escapes at Lower Lye is an historic Grade 2* listed medieval hall house, this property is based on the farmstead on the grounds. The holiday cottages & curtilage are therefore listed by association. The site, because of its age & heritage has many uneven, non-level surfaces. Much of the outside amenity space & paths are cobbled. There is also open water & several streams. Whilst these features add to the character & charm here & we do not wish to exclude children or those less stable on their feet, it might well be that we are not best suited to their requirements.
