What a wonderful cottage!

Almost tempted to leave a less glowing review so we can keep this little gem of a cottage to ourselves! Chocolate box perfect and so cosy after a day out. Everything you need is provided and Caroline the owner is lovely and not far away if you need help- not that we did. So nice to come back to after a day out and snuggle up to watch TV. ( No WiFi and we had patchy phone reception at times but that just meant we could relax more in many respects. The dark skies at night are spectacular and the garden was perfect for our dog to run around in, although be aware there is no fencing alongside the woods and these eventually lead out onto the road...The summerhouse was so comfortable we could barely drag ourselves out of it to go exploring the surrounding countryside! So peaceful and quiet with only birdsong to interrupt your reading/snoozing/contemplation and lots of birds visiting. We didn't see any red squirrels or deer but that's highly likely due to our hyperactive pooch! Plenty of shops and amenities in Stranraer, an easy ten minute drive away and so many little out of the way coves and beaches to explore on the Rhins themselves. Recommend the cream teas at Corsewall lighthouse in the NW of the Rhins, the only lighthouse and hotel in UK we're informed! Then walk it off with a walk along the neighbouring coastal footpaths- or vice versa.

We have just returned from Rosewood Cottage which is probably the best we have ever stayed in.

A large enclosed garden surrounded by woodland which you could access with ease (paradise for our dog). It was lovely to spend a leisurely morning reading, then out for a walk (most of which are on your doorstep), then back to the Summer House for a glass of wine and relaxation whilst watching our dog laying on the grass and taking in all the smells of the surrounding wildlife. The cottage itself was lovely and cosy with a great wood burner and the peace at night when you are laying in bed is something we have never experienced before (you could have heard a pin drop). We would definitely recommend this cottage and will be returning.

Appearance-wise the cottage and grounds looked pretty on arrival.

Upon entering Rose Cottage there was a distinct and overpowering odour, which was more prominent within the living room area. We were unsure if this was due to the lingering smells of the wood burner within the fabric of the building and furnishings. We did not utilise the wood burner as the heating was effective enough when required in the evenings. We found the living room to be relatively dark, even with the lights on, making reading difficult for us. In addition to this, we found the kitchen not to be adequately cleaned (e.g. food residue inside the dishwasher door, sink areas not properly cleaned, crumbs still present in the freezer drawers, liquid with a strange odour in the salad crisper drawer, a lingering smell of fish in the microwave, and a greasy and sticky grill pan). We noticed what appeared to be black mould on the walls of the utility room. For us, this was not a good experience and put a damper on our holiday; therefore, we won’t be returning to Rose Cottage. The cottage is well situated for accessing local attractions and amenities. In the early mornings, we spotted wildlife within the grounds, including red deer and pheasants.
