South Milton Cottage

This was the second time that we have stayed at South Milton, and on this occasion we were accompanied by family members, including two children.

The cottage which occupies a lovely coastal area, is both very comfortable and also well-furnished and equipped. Though we stayed this time in August, and did not need the heating, our previous stay was in Autumn, and the heating system provided a very cosy and comfortable base for the holiday.

I loved staying at South Milton Cottage.

As soon as I walked into the property I just loved it, I love the open plan space and the windows floor to ceiling in the sitting room, it was such a lovely space to just chill out and watch the sheep wandering round on the opposite hill, and the deer and rabbits wandering past at night. It felt like being enfolded in the beauty of the countryside, the peace and quiet was everything I wished for. The cottage was immaculately clean and warm and had absolutely everything we needed A beautiful space inside and out. A big thank-you to the owner Ian for letting us arrive earlier than stated. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property it’s a 10/10. Thank you.

We loved the cottage, it contains everything anyone could possibly need for a comfortable holiday.

Our little dog loved the underfloor heating. We enjoyed the coastal walk and the forest trail. Saw hares and buzzards. Had a day in Stranraer. Thank you for the wine.

What a smashing cottage in a super location The beach and bay just 5 minutes walk was idyllic and we even had a swim or 2 in the sea All facilities top notch and comfy for all 4 of us Pity the cock inn has closed because there are no pubs anywhere even in port William or glunluce village Not a problem we ate and drank our fill in the super cottage and happily banged our heads going to bed !

Beautiful cottage fabulous views close to a few towns.

Very private, spiral staircase, log fire, floor to ceiling windows. All sundries provide like hand soap, toilet rolls, washing up liquid etc. Private gated parking for three cars. Large kitchen. TV signal bad so couldn't watch normal TV. Low ceilings upstairs as they have build into the attic space. Stunning cottage, very clean would recommend will be going back.

The visitors' book shows that many people have stayed here more than once and I would not hesitate to come back again in the future.

Late afternoon after work we travelled 4 hours in sunshine and beautiful scenery to a lovely looking cottage following the directions supplied.

We could see it at the end of our journey over the trench and road closed (since March) signs. Finally arriving on another road (through more road closed signs, no trench). A bottle of red wine thankyou (milk would have been appreciated more). We did enjoy our holiday, the cottage although needing some general maintenance is beautiful and in a lovely area. However the heating is remotely controlled and was switched off until in desperation as the temperatures in the kitchen and upstairs areas dipped gradually over a few days to an uncomfortable 15 to 16 degrees we had to contact Ian and ask for the heating on as it really was cool for June. He responded immediately, as he did when we couldn't find an accessible route on day 1 and by the end of the day it was much more comfortable. Although the cottage is lovely and the area beautiful, unlike many previous occupants I would not want to come back to this particular one due to the lack of direct control over a basic necessity.

Wine & biscuits on arrival was lovely touch. Ideal location with plenty to see within local area. Would definitely recommend. Will be back soon.

We had a fantastic chilled week.

The owners have thought of everything you could possibly need. Cooking facilities spot on. Beds really comfy. All clean and ready to go. Others have mentioned the headroom upstairs - remember to turn on the nightlight on the landing for any nighttime bathroom trips and you’ll be fine. Lovely stroll to the beach. Easy drives for days out. Decided to walk to the Cock Inn but weather changed our minds about walking which we were glad of so worth having a designated driver. Had some wild weather a few days but so cosy with log fire and all streaming apps on TVs for a family movie. Games, books and DVDs available too. Kid joined us later after a camp so washer and dryer were a Godsend. Highly recommend.

Lovely cottage in peaceful and beautiful area.

The description of the cottage is accurate: it is worth noting that headroom upstairs is as limited as they say, but this didn’t cause any problems for us (even my 6’4” husband!). Great location for visiting the Rhins of Galloway and the Machars, and cosy to return to at the end of the day. Thanks for a relaxing stay.

A beautiful cottage in a beautiful, peaceful location.

Lovely cottage.

Loads of light and airy space downstairs. Watching the antics of the 4 hares in the field behind all week was a real treat. It would be safer if the edges of the rafters across the landing were painted a contrasting colour - it is currently all too easy to bang your head in the limited head space around the staircase.

This is a cracking holiday place.

Spacious (especially for just two!) comfortable, bright and airy and very well equipped. It’s very well located for exploring Dumfries & Galloway and also close to a nice quiet little beach.

South Milton is an amazing renovation.

The property is finished to a really high spec. The downstairs area is very spacious. The kitchen area is massive and very well equipped. The lounge is cosy and comfortable. The utility room has lots of space and a good washing machine and drier. Downstairs shower room is also spacious. Upstairs is also finished to a high spec - but, and i would have given four and half stars here, there is a lack of head room and few places where we could stand up straight. We are not tall people so maybe a point for consideration. The views from the property were great, lots of windows. The location is very good to access Stranraer, Newton Stewart, south end of the forest, Wigtown and Ilse of Whithorn.

A beautiful remote location very close to the sea. Excellent countryside views in all directions.

A beautiful, well-equipped cottage situated in lovely countryside with coastal walking nearby and other things to do not far away.

Downstairs is fabulous, comfortable and has great views, but the exceptionally low ceilings upstairs were very difficult to negotiate (and we’re used to sloping ceilings at home!). Disappointed that the huge collection of DVD’s couldn’t be viewed in the lounge and the internet was too slow to support streaming programmes on the Smart TV. [Not sure if Sykes has a policy on provision of consumables, but we've rented many Sykes properties in the last 5 years, and all those with dishwashers have provided tablets & all those with washing machines have provided washing liquid. At South Milton Cottage there was no washing liquid/powder, and given that shops were some distance away, this was a little frustrating - if we'd known in advance we'd have taken some with us] However, overall a lovely property which provided us with a great holiday.

Really beautiful cottage, very well equipped, beautiful peaceful setting, immediate response when asking a query from owners, only 3 out of 4 for comfort because if you weren’t quick to remember the low angle of the bedroom ceilings, you hit your head!

Really enjoyed our stay at South Milton Cottage.

Ideal property for families (we had 2 & 1 year olds, and a baby). Very well equipped kitchen, and great layout. As previous reviews have stated, the low ceilings upstairs are a bit challenging if you’re tall, but we were only up there for sleeping so not a massive issue. Our only problems were that we were unable to put up the cot, and we couldn’t find instructions to turn off the underfloor heating during the hottest week of the year, but then we didn’t ask, so that’s our own fault! Great setting for exploring beaches, gardens and much more. Lovely area.

Beautiful property and lovely location, we had cows in the field keeping us company all week.

It was a very relaxing break and we thoroughly enjoyed the holiday. My only comment would be that the sloping ceilings upstairs make life quite difficult for anyone over 5ft, my husband couldn't get in or out of bed or walk in a straight line without bumping into the slopes! This just added to the fun though and we absolutely loved every minute of our stay.

The cottage is one of the best we have ever stayed in.

Lovely lounge with comfy chairs and beautiful views of the sunsets, and kitchen large and very well equipped… AND empty cupboards to accommodate your own supplies (so many don’t provide this). Everything was very clean and easy to use (didn’t quite get the hang of the microwave, but hey) Upstairs was also beautifully clean, and beds very comfortable , again making the most of the views. Loved it.

This is an amazing place.

The place was immaculate and it was very quiet. There is everything you could possibly need and more to make your visit more comfortable and enjoyable I would definitely recommend this cottage for anyone wanting to recharge.

Close to beach and coastal walks. Owners extremely helpful and knowledgeable to help ensure we had an enjoyable stay. Love the idea of providing a telescope so you can stargaze with virtually no light pollution. Very comfortable beds which is always a bonus. We hope to return soon.

This was an excellent property which was well-maintained and extremely comfortable.

It had all the essential equipment and requirements for a holiday cottage and was very clean and welcoming. It had superb views all around and was well-located for visiting both coast and countryside. Would definitely recommend this property.

Ian the owner was a superb host. On our arrival was welcome gifts and a card. We have already recommended the cottage to family and friends. We could not have picked a better property. Absolutely stunning little escape.

Everything was exactly as shown in the photos. Pam and Ian were fantastic hosts. I cannot describe enough how beautiful the view is from the living room made even better with the log burning fire. We couldn’t wait to return, even before we had left and were even discussing plans of when to do so during the drive home.

An absolute fantastic stay at a wonderful cottage.

You could not wish for a more perfect place to stay whilst on holiday, perfectly located to explore all that Dumfries and Galloway areas have to offer. The cottage is superbly equipped and extremely comfortable and allows to completely relax and unwind. Fantastic views both early mornings and as the sun sets. Great communication form the owners and really easy to find. We will certainly be looking to come back again and will be recommending to our friends and family.

Beautifully appointed cottage in a great location every thing you need for a fantastic holiday.

The cottage was scrupulously clean, very welcome and reassuring in the current pandemic.

It’s also very well equipped and a lot of thought has gone into furnishings. Wonderful peaceful location with lots of things to do in the local environs. The downside to this cottage is the heating. We have stayed in a lot of self catering cottages over the years but never stayed in a cottage where you cannot control the heating. Everything is password protected and controlled remotely by the owners. We had a particular problem with upstairs routinely being 23/24 degrees which was too hot and the lounge ranged from 15-18 which wasn’t ideal on an evening when you want to relax and read or watch television. In fairness to the owners there seems to be a problem with the underfloor heating downstairs which needs remedying. We were given access to unlimited wood for the stove. Felt a little shortchanged as this wasn’t one of the cheapest cottages in the area.

The setting, high quality of finish in cottage, downstairs layout, sunsets, wildlife, very helpful owner, easy to find, convenient access to places of interest in Galloway and the coast.

Evening walk into Stairhaven.

We all loved the design of the kitchen and living room which created a wonderful sense of space and light.

We were warm as toast with the underfloor heating. It rained nearly every day but the children were comfortable and content to be in the cottage. Our day out to the Kirroughtree mountain bike centre was the best ever antidote to Covid.

The cottage had everything needed and the sitting room was a real sun trap - and yes there was actually sunshine as well.

Fantastic cottage in beautiful, peaceful location equipped with everything we needed.

Great walks and beaches on the doorstep. Saw deer behind the cottage every day and also dolphins and seals off the coast nearby. Would highly recommend and love to revisit.

A lovely cottage in a quiet and peaceful location with lovely views all round, nicely situated for visiting places of interest, Castle Kennedy gardens, Galloway forest, Mull of Galloway, Portpatrick, Stranraer just a 20 minute drive away.

The cottage was well equipped and very spacious and a bottle of wine waiting for us when we arrived, a nice touch. would recommend this cottage.

Owner was very good and responded quickly when I phoned as we had no towels on arrival.

It got sorted and they arrived at 9pm. Otherwise very well equipped, clean & comfortable cottage. Enjoyed our stay and visiting the area - Thank you!

Beautiful cottage in a very remote location!

Beautiful scenery wherever you look. The cottage was very well equipped, it has everything you need and the bonus of a bottle of Red! Comfy beds with plenty of light and space. Our daughter loved the low ceilings in the front bedroom with the stunning views. Only a couple of negatives from us would be, the property is "dog free" yet there was alot of black dog hair throughout the property! All in all we had a wonderful time and enjoyed some great quality family time together. Thank you :)

2 South Milton Cottages was very comfortable, spacious, bright, and clean, with all the facilities we required.

It's location was great for exploring the area and I wouldn't hesitate to revisit or to recommend.

Really lovely cottage, clean and comfortable.

Very handy folder of useful information and a box of leaflets for local walks and things to do. Nice touches made us feel welcome, such as the bottle of wine and the fire was laid ready. There was a supply of wood which lasted us several evenings. Kitchen was well equiped. A previous review mentioned the ceiling heights - they are very low but only upstairs in the bedrooms so it's only an issue when you're going to bed. The ceilings are high in the downstairs living areas, so my 6ft 5 husband was fine.

Beautiful, rural cottage a few minutes walk to a beach and stunning coastline.

Property was immaculate and we all commented that it was very spacious (Tardis Like) and had a good layout for a family group. Like previous hirers due to the nature of the cottage and ceiling height up anyone taller than 6ft would struggle. All in all a fabulous cottage and would use again also loved the fact that there was no wifi and patchy mobile reception!

House great peace and quiet.

Second time there. Every thing we needed .Plenty of places to visit. Did not get to Ireland as weather too hot but enjoyed ourselves.

We had some very difficult communication with Sykes leading up to the holiday where I felt there was no grace at all for the situation that we found ourselves in.

Probably you can see that from documentation of previous communication. That apart, the holiday itself was good.

The property and location were stunning, wildlife, quiet beaches all close by .

Definitely a place to unwind and relax would definitely recommend .

The only comment I would make is that you need to be very careful upstairs not to bang your head.
