"A lovely place, home from home and we loved the location, clean and quite and close to the mountain and lakes."
We could not ask for more in any way, just perfect.
-
"This is one of the best holiday homes we have ever stayed in."
The location is great for short day trips to local areas and scenery. Facilities are fantastic, it has everything you need for a home from home. It is very peaceful and the gardens all around are beautifully tended with lots of loving care. We have already booked for a return stay next year!! The only small thing I might do for older people (like me

"Carpenters Cottage was very comfortable, extremely clean and the photos on site don't really do it justice."
It was very well equipped and I especially liked the radio in the bedroom. My only minor niggle is I would prefer larger bath towels as we are a tall family. I'll definitely book again ( I'd like to stay in Summer) as a base to visit family nearby who visited and really liked it. Highly recommend.

"Lovely stay as usual 5*"
-
"We had a wonderful stay at this fantastic property."
It is spacious and very well equipped, a real home from home. It is tastefully furnished and well maintained. The reality surpasses expectations from the photos. It has a great location with a short walk into town. We'd have no hesitation in recommending this cottage. This was our second visit and we booked our third before we left!
-
"What a lovely property in a prime location."
Stunning scenery of the mountains very close by and not to far far other lake district attractions. Property was on a very quiet location and was very cosy. Owners had put up a Xmas tree which was such a surprise and lovely touch. Property was spotless and has all you need home from home. There is a town centre literally 5 mins drive or short walk away. Was unsure of what Cockermouth was like and this was a big surprise, will hopefully deffinately return at some time with friends. Thankyou so much.

"A great property, so we'll equipped."
Loved the games cupboard and the treats ! One if the best holiday homes we've stayed in. Great situation for the western lakes.
-
"Carpenter’s is a lovely, comfortable property in a nice, quiet area but within walking distance of Cockermouth (though it is uphill on the way back!"
). We often walked into the town to eat and drink (there are plenty of lovely cafes and restaurants). This was our third stay and we have already booked again for next year. The owner has thought of everything and it’s so useful having a washer/dryer, as we didn’t come home with a pile of washing to do! Great to see the WiFi has been improved and the smart tv is an added bonus. The only thing I will do different next time is take my own, larger, bath towels, but that’s purely a personal preference! Carpenter’s Cottage really is a home away from home and we can’t recommend it highly enough-an absolute gem!
-
"Great cottage in an ideal location, short walk to Cockermouth with a good local bus service."
We loved watching the different birds in the garden , we even had a visit from a woodpecker. Cottage is very well equipped with everything you need, only thing we couldn’t find was the pole for the velux windows nothing major. I would highly recommend the cottage
-
"Amazing property credit to the owners, great location for visiting surrounding areas."
We are glad that you enjoyed staying at Carpenters Cottage and we would love to welcome you back in the future. Property Owner

"Our second visit to this cottage and we plan on a third visit sometime"
-
"We really enjoyed our stay at Carpenters Cottage."
We loved the location of the property within the old school grounds. The cottage is well equipped and kept to a very high standard. Very cosy and a great place to come back to after a busy day in the Lakes. Would definitely recommend to others!
-
"Probably the nicest cottage I've stayed in over the last few years."
The upside-down layout works really well, with the bright and spacious open plan area being the highlight. Bedrooms are both a good size with comfortable beds. It's nearly impossible to find a fault with the place, though the can opener was pretty useless and fell to bits*, which shows just how hard it is to find fault ! *we replaced it Cockermouth itself is a "proper" little town, so not as twee as the likes of Keswick or Ambleside, which, depending on what you're looking for, is either a plus or a minus, but is a great base for the Northern half of the Lakes and has some decent pubs, restaurants and cafes.

"We had a really fantastic stay at this beautiful, spacious cottage."
It was very clean and fresh - felt like we were one of the first guests to use it, as it was in such good condition. However it is clear from the guest book that this high standard has been maintained for years. It was a very, very well equipped cottage, with everything you could possibly needs and lots of really helpful information. The pictures don't do justice to the lovely, relaxing and cosy - yet spacious- feel you get staying here. Unfortunately the weather was very wet during our stay, but as the cottage was so nice it didn't detract from us having a great time - very relaxing. It is in a great location, only about a 15 min walk into the town centre, which has lots of places to eat and drink. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend and hope to visit again soon. Thank you for making our stay so wonderful!
-
"Carpenter’s Cottage was simply wonderful."
Comfortable, clean, and containing everything we needed for a great break. The location is perfect too - 15 minutes walk from a great pub and 20 minutes walk from the town centre. If we return to Cockermouth, we would definitely stay here again.
-
"Great, peaceful, welcome pack appreciated."
great place to stay while visiting Dad. Our 2nd time and looking to book again
-
"Stayed at this property at least three times so no it well."
Its an ideal location for cycling and getting to the western fells.
-
"Carpenters Cottage is a home away from home."
Superbly presented with everything you need. It's beautiful. We have stayed at Carpenters Cottage twice in 3 years and we will be fussy where we stay in future. You are welcomed with a hamper of goodies, which is a lovely touch. And visitors give you hints of where to eat and go in the visitors book. We have throughly enjoyed our stay again.
-
"In over 40 years of visiting the Lake District, this was perhaps the best holiday rental property we've ever used."
We couldn't fault any aspect of it.
-
"Another fabulous stay at Carpenters Cottage, perfect"
-
"The best holiday let we have stayed in."
Everything you could need and really comfortable to return to after a days walking. Nice walk into the town centre and plenty of walks from the town as well as into the national park. Enjoyed our stay so much we have already booked for next spring!
-
"We really enjoyed our stay at this immaculate property."
Spacious bedroom and open plan kitchen, lounge and dining area. We never contacted the owners because we didn't need to, the cottage had everything we needed. What a lovely place to bring in the New Year
-
"A lovely house, loved the big hallway for leaving muddy boots and wet coats."
Great location for exploring Northern lake District
-
"This is a lovely place to stay."
The cottage has everything you need to have a comfortable base from which to explore the region. Would recommend the cottage without hesitation.
-
"Carpenters cottage was a great place to stay"
-
"The cottage was spotless, very comfortable, obviously well maintained and the owners had thought of everything that you could possibly need for a stay in the Lake’s."
-
"Get to get away the place was great."
It was a little hard to find photos and description did not make it clear it was not a stand alone property and part of a very attractive complex conversation of an old school. The location was lovely we will probably return.
-
"A lovely cottage which felt just like a home from the moment we arrived."
The setting is excellent, very peaceful and felt completely safe. Great to have such easy parking for two cars. We enjoyed having access to our own private outdoor space too. The cottage was immaculate, very spacious and extremely comfortable. The kitchen was well fitted and well equipped. There were plentiful supplies of loo rolls, dishwasher tablets etc etc - does make such a difference! And there was a lovely welcome pack too. There were lots of games, books, DVDs for any wet days, though we were pretty fortunate with the weather, given the forecast! Both bedrooms were spacious and had plenty of storage, perhaps a slightly softer mattress than we are used too, but slept well all the same! Great access into Cockermouth by foot along the Greenway. Cockermouth is a lovely town with great coffee shops ( try the one in the bookshop - great flat whites) and restaurants ( Wild Zucchini will deliver if you order a few days in advance and The Honest Lawyer served great food too).
-
"Its a lovely cottage, well presented, with all the facilities you could hope for, in a good location to explore the area around Cockermouth."
-
"A lovely cottage, extremely well equipped they have thought of everything."
It’s very quiet but a short drive or a 20 minute walk along a lane will get you into Cockermouth with all its facilities. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property and look forward to returning some time.
-
"We loved the luxury of this cottage -- particularly the space overall and specifically upstairs."
The whole development (the old grammar school building plus extra buildings such as this cottage, which used to be the woodwork department) was very quiet. We hardly saw anybody else. It was perfect to visit my elderly parents who live about four miles away -- we couldn't go in their house because of covid, but went for walks with them every day. The footpath down into Cockermouth was much better than walking down the pavement to town.
-
"Faultless! Carpenters Cottages is just as good as the photographs suggest."
It is beautifully furnished and exceptionally well-equipped, with super comfy beds. It was impeccably clean too. We loved the first floor open-plan kitchen/dining/living area - a great space where the family could all be together. It was lovely and warm too with no shortage of hot water which was much appreciated given the very wet week we had. The location is perfect - walkable along a green lane into Cockermouth for all its lovely shops and cafes but within a short drive of fantastic walking in the north-west Lakes or along the coast. We felt very lucky to have found this place and hope to be back again soon.
-
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the cottage was exactly as shown on the website."
It was really lovely and extremely clean and comfortable. I would recommend Sykes and Carpenters cottage for anyone wanting to stay in the Lake District.
-
"This was a beautiful place to stay."
Very clean and well equipped cottage. Felt very comfortable there. Lovely and quiet. Short walk into Cockermouth.
-
"Amazing place!"
Just beautifully done will definitely return.
-
"Lovely cottage, great location easy access to lakes and walks."
Cockermouth town is nice to walk around recommend Sunday lunch in the Bitter end.
-
"Amazing property and very well appointed."
All furnishings were of a high quality and it felt just like a real home.
-
"We have been to this cottage twice now, last year and our recent visit and it is so clean, everything has been thought of such as kitchen utensils, anything you would require - it is home from home."
It is in a perfect location to get to places and in walking distance of Cockermouth where there are pubs, eating places, shops available. It is perfect!
-
"Fantastic location."
Beautiful property literally thought of everything and had everything we needed for a wonderful mini honeymoon
-
"Cottage was absolutely fantastic."
Everything had been thought of and it was a amazong place to stay. Beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean, couldn't recommend enough.
-
"We had an extremely comfortable stay."
The cottage was spotless, well equipped and in a lovely area.
-
"We were completely blown away by just how amazing our accommodation was, everything was thought of, we really only needed to turn up with our clothes and holiday spends such was the care and attention to detail."
We are already considering our return visit in 2020x An amazing place it must be said.
-
"After many years of booking self-catering cottages, this was easily the best we have ever stayed in."
It was beautifully decorated and furnished to a very high standard. Every need was catered for with great attention to detail. The location was peaceful but handy for the town. We highly recommend Carpenter's Cottage.
-
"Carpenter's Cottage was beautiful, clean, tidy and homely - set in a wonderful setting."
It had everything we needed, it was a lovely base for our Cumbrian adventure. Would highly recommend and will be booking it again for another holiday.
-
"The attention to detail was outstanding."
Felt very much at home and relaxed beautifully
-
"Carpenters Cottage is a lovely well cared for property and we fully enjoyed our recent stay there."
It is very well situated with only a 10 to 15 minute walk into Cockermouth town itself with its many and varied restaurants, tea / coffee shops and numerous pubs. The internal layout of the cottage is really nice, with both bedrooms and bathroom on the ground floor, which leaves the entire top floor open plan accommodating a lovely comfortable lounge / dining area and a well furnished kitchen. Internet access was quite fast too. There are two reserved parking spaces outside the cottage, but there appeared to be another parking area within 100 metres of the cottage. Strawberry How where the cottage is located is a very quiet and peaceful redevelopment of the old grammar school premises and grounds, and in a very convenient position for all the area offers. It also very well situated for the Buttermere valley, Loweswater close by and Ennerdale within 30 minutes drive. Keswick and the Borrowdale valley are also easily accessible, within 20 minutes drive of the cottage.
-
"Immaculately presented property"
-
"I would certainly recommend this cottage to stay in,and is easy accessible to surrounding areas and attractions."
-
"The house was the best one we have ever stayed in, the attention to detail and level of comfort was amazing."
It had everything we could possibly need. If I was to come again I'd probably bring my own towels as there was only four and they were tiny, so one towel each for four nights isn't really enough. Apart from that it was perfect and we will be back :)
-
"Carpenter's Cottage is a lovely spacious cottage in a quiet spot on the edge of Cockermouth (but an easy walk into town)."
It was very interesting to read about the history of the building. We didn't look around Cockermouth much as we were visiting for a family event (so already know the area) but we think the cottage would be a very good base for anyone wanting to explore the Lakes. The cottage was very comfortable - we loved relaxing in the large open plan living/kitchen/dining area. It was very well stocked with everyday supplies such as tea, coffee, bathroom supplies, washing up liquid etc and the extra complimentary basket was much appreciated. All in all we had a very nice stay - thank you!
-
"First impressions count and we were not disappointed."
The house is spotless and well maintained. The whole space seems light, airy and very comfortable throughout. The kitchen is also very well equipped. There are plenty of thoughtful additions for outdoor activities; maps, walking books, boot trays, umbrellas and even a walking stick. We also made use of the books and games and have introduced the kids to Cluedo.
-
"The cottage is the most comfortable, spotlessly clean, with everything in that you might need, the most perfect place to stay."
We would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone else. It was also in a lovely location perfectly situated for a nice walk into Cockermouth without having to drive.
-
"Wonderful house with everything you could want plus extras and in a great location for exploring the area"
-
"Amazing beautiful cottage, so nice we have booked again"
-
"Fabulous accommodation."
Will definitely be back.
-
"A really brilliant place to stay if you wanting to see the northern lakes."
Great cycling from the door down into Crummock water and Buttermere plus good access to Wasdale. To walk into Cockermouth their was a pathway right across the road along the river which took about 15 minutes. This property was exceptionally clean and spacious and exceeded our expectations and will certainly go back again.
-
"Carpenters Cottage, a great place to stay."
-
"From start to finish the stay was a delight."
The cottage is well situated for Cockermouth ,with a path along an old railway line , 2 mins from your front door. Everything you could wish for has been thought of in this cottage. I have had many holidays in cottages and this is one of the best. The decor is lovely, modern and practical. The kitchen has every amenity to hand. You can even replenish the bird-feeders in the small back garden! A lovely home from home!
-

We thoroughly recommend this cottage to others wishing to spend some time in the Lake District

About the location
COCKERMOUTH
Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles.
The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
