  • "We had a pleasant 5 nights here & used it as a base for visiting Annan, Dumfries and Carlisle."

The beds were comfortable, all 4 of us slept well. Kitchen was well equipped; the only thing I missed was a cafetiere, but this wasn't a big deal. Only real downside to the property was the WiFi - the bandwidth was really poor, affecting Netflix and pretty much any online activity - even just uploading photographs required patience & gaming was a no-no. In summary, a very clean and comfortable property; we had a lovely stay and would happily recommend it.

  • "When we arrived at the cottage Lynn was there to meet us and took us around the cottage, she was very helpful and said if we needed anything just to call her, the cottage was lovely and cosy with lots of peace and quiet just what we needed."

  • "A lovely property, warm and spacious."

The local pub is presently closed, and there are no shopping facilities in the village, so perhaps not suitable for some visitors.

  • "Lynne was a very amiable host and the house was very cosy and easy to run."

A nice welcome package greeted us so we did not need to worry about anything! We would certainly recommend Rose Cottage for a nice break at any time of the year!

  • "Rose cottage, was a perfect location to stay, while visiting sites in every direction, the A1 and M6 close enough to slip into Scotland, the Lakes or Northumbria."

We visited Carlisle, Penrith, Gretna and Lockerbie, also walks along Hadrians pass, and the river Eden. The cottage had every facility you required. The owner Lynn, was very pleasant, lived in the village, nothing was to much trouble, if you needed help with anything. A very pleasant week, the weather of course was a bonus.

  • "We stayed here for a few weeks while waiting for our house to be ready."

Lovely cottage, and really nice owners who live nearby if you need anything. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed. We found the Wi-Fi a little slow and the mobile signal was intermittent, but that’s due to the location and the thickness of the cottage walls. It was fine most of the time, but we were working from home and sometimes we lost connection momentarily during online meetings or phone calls. This didn’t detract from the loveliness of the cottage. The location was great, in a lovely village and I l enjoyed being opposite the village school. The neighbours were very friendly. I was sad to leave and would be happy to return.

  • "We would like to thank the owners of Rose Cottage for a very happy warm welcome from the minute we arrived, they showed us around the cottage and answered any questions we had and even put our special needs daughter at ease."

The cottage was very clean and tidy and you felt like you was at home and was well looked after and the little touches made it even more special. We loved it from the minute we stepped in the front door. The location was just in the right place and close to shops, attractions and anything else you needed and a pub just down the road. The people in the area was very friendly even the neighbours and was very welcoming too. It is lovely and peaceful there too. We loved that much we are definitely going back in the near future. We recommend to anyone we know and other people to stay at Rose Cottage cos you really would not get a lovelier place and nicer people that own Rose Cottage they really do care about there guest and treat you like family. We really do think Rose Cottage and the owners deserve 5**+++ rating and we really would give more if we could.

  • "Our family really enjoyed the stay at the Rose Cottage!"

The property was very comfortable, clean, well equipped and with a lot of space, exactly what it looked like from the pictures. The owners were very accommodating and helpful. The groceries on our arrival was really a bonus. Not far from Carlisle, Hadrian's wall, the coast, the North Lakes, the Scottish borders. So a lot of things to do, even in bad weather.

  • "A lovely cottage in a lovely village."

Very quiet and peaceful. Close enough to lots of attractions, but, also secluded enough to recharge the batteries. The cottage itself is very comfortable, the garden an added bonus. Lynn, the owner was very helpful and very welcoming. All in all, a great place to stay.

It was very quite as the kids were on holidays but any traffic that past by did so at quite a fast pace so you have to be mindful when stepping outside the door.

About the location

CARLISLE

Gretna Green 13.1 miles; Penrith 19.9 miles; Dumfries 36.2 miles

Carlisle is set in the county of Cumbria, situated just 10 miles south of the Scottish Borders and is nicknamed the Border City. During Roman times the town was established to serve the forts for Hadrian's Wall, which runs east from the city across the country to Wallsend on the east coast and today is recognised as a World Heritage Site. During the Middle Ages, due to its proximity to the Kingdom of Scotland, Carlisle became an important military stronghold and Carlisle Castle, still relatively intact, was built in 1092 by William Rufus, after once serving as a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots. The castle now houses the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and the Border Regiment Museum. In the early 12th century Henry I allowed the foundation of a priory in Carlisle and the town gained the status of a diocese in 1122, resulting in the priory becoming Carlisle Cathedral. The Settle to Carlisle railway runs across some of the most breathtaking scenery to the popular Yorkshire town and Carlisle Racecourse has a packed fixture list including Ladies’ Day and evening fixtures. Within driving distance is the Victorian seaside town of Silloth and just over the border is Gretna Green, where you'll find the Gretna Gateway Shopping Centre and Anvil Hall, the famous wedding venue.
