However most people would probably relish such kitchen appliances. The bed is as wonderfully comfortable and our private patio with comfy furniture was much appreciated by us.

  • "We have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending The Bothy."

It is a magnificent little cottage, and a credit to the owners (Carol and Mike). We were incredibly impressed by the high standard of refurbishment and housekeeping throughout. The moment you walk in, you can tell that Carol and Mike take great pride in ensuring guests are well looked after. If this was a hotel room, it would be up there with the best that we've stayed in. Carol and Mike are also attentive hosts. On the day we were driving up, a massive storm followed us all the way from London. Carol messaged us during the day to make sure we were ok. At one point during our stay, the shower stopped working. Even though Carol and Mike were on holiday themselves, Carol was very responsive to our messages. She told us what to do, and then checked in to make sure it was working again. Another review suggests that there should be an anti-slip mat in the shower. We can confirm that there is one, which shows that Carol and Mike take feedback seriously. The Bothy has a TV with access to all the regular channels. You can also connect your laptop to it using an HDMI lead should you wish to curl up in bed and watch a film of your own. (The lead isn't supplied, and we're not suggesting it should be. We brought our own.) Carol and Mike have also compiled a folder with user manuals for the various appliances in The Bothy so you're not left trying to work things out for yourself. At the back of the manual, there are travel guides. Little things like this say great things about hosts. Arncliffe is a beautiful village, a universe away from our life in London. The landscape is perfect for hikes and mindfulness walks. On our first day, we explored the local area across the river by St Oswald's Church. We spent our second day hiking in Malham (Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn and Malham Cove). Other days, we visited Skipton's market and castle, Aysgarth Falls, Ribblehead Viaduct, the Wensleydale Creamery, and White Scar Cave. Also, we did a day trip to the Lake District to hike over Catbells by Derwentwater. I suggest driving via Buttertubs Pass and Keld - some of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever see! No wonder they say Yorkshire is God's own country! Finally, this is just our advice to visitors. Stay away from the Falcon Inn. It's a miserable place run by an oafish family lacking in basic customer service skills. Its opening hours aren't even regular, and it looks like its been in need of a damn good clean for several years now. We visited a couple of times, and its patrons are international travellers. It really says something about a pub when locals are hardly to be seen. There are plenty of delightful pubs in neighbouring villages for lunches, dinners and wider choice of drinks. This was our first time using Sykes Cottage, and we will definitely be using this site again. Thank you, Carol and Mike, for making our trip something to remember.

It was immaculately presented and has everything you need for a holiday. The patio was perfect for al fresco dining and luckily we had a perfect week of weather to take advantage of it. There are some beautiful walks straight from the doorstep with Kettlewell situated in the next valley. The owners Michael and Carol were extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble, even offering me the use of their bikes when they heard I was a cyclist. Although the Bothy is situated at the rear of their house in the far end of the garden, it felt completely private. We would definitely recommend it without hesitation and look forward to returning.

The off-road parking would be a tight squeeze for many cars but there is plenty of parking nearby in the village. It's nice and peaceful with garden to one side and fields to the other and the village itself is a quiet backwater of the Dales (except, maybe, on summer weekends). There are also places to sit outside, weather permitting! As is typical the Sykes location map does not show the exact location of the cottage - it's only accurate to village level - so rely on the owners instructions to find it.

Weather was perfect and autumnal. Friendly welcome to this charming cosy accommodation, spotlessly clean, tidy and comfortable. So quiet and peaceful. Set in stunning scenery and plenty of superb walks from the doorstep. We spent 3 nights/days if much needed tranquility. Highly recommended The Bothy for escape and relaxation. Only one thing I'd change... I would prefer a small oven in place of the dishwasher, but we knew it had no oven beforehand so shopped accordingly. We know all to well the effort in creating an RHS show garden so it was a fun treat to actually live in one for a few days without the hard work making it, thank you Michael and Carol.

The place was very comfortable and cosy, the bed gorgeous and the owners, who lived on site, were very helpful and friendly. The large shower cubicle was also very welcome. The one omission was the lack of any freezer storage at all. It is usual to have a bit in the fridge but this was lacking. Hence I have marked down 'facilities'. Also a small measuring jug would have been very useful - I resorted to using the coffee percolator! I thought having a dishwasher in such a small kitchen was a waste of very limited space. Needless to say it wasn't used. I would certainly recommend this property and would consider using it again if visiting the Yorkshire Dales again.

The property

A stone built, ground floor detached cottage located in the owner’s grounds, in the famous Dales village of Arncliffe, the original setting for Emmerdale Farm.

The cottage itself boasts its own history, based on having been part of an award-winning garden at the Chelsea Flower show just a few years ago.

An ideal location for a romantic break or a great base just to get away from it all and enjoy the beautiful surroundings in this walker’s paradise.

The biking is also excellent and The Bothy provides a secure bike area.

With beautiful modern styling throughout, the owners have gone to great lengths to provide a luxurious and well thought out holiday home of considerable merit and style.

Small and cute best describes the open-plan L shaped layout with a modern kitchen greeting guests at the main entrance.

Walk into the living area where there is a king-size bed at the centre of the room, two comfortable easy chairs and a small dining area.

Cosy throughout with high ceilings, a lovely oak floor, contemporary lighting and the added benefit of lovely views of the surrounding gardens.

A superb en-suite facility with walk-in shower unit provides the icing on the cake for this lovely little holiday home.

Immediately outside the main entrance door is a patio area enclosed by a traditional dry-stone wall and is a great place to sit, enjoy dining al-fresco and take in some of the surrounding fells.

To the front and side of the cottage are mature gardens and the stone bench was enjoyed by the Queen when she visited the exhibition at the Chelsea flower show.

The village itself is in an idyllic location, with a large green to the centre of the village surrounded by traditional stone-built cottages and farm buildings and was the original film set for Emmerdale.

A two-minute walk will take you to the village pub, which was the famous Woolpack pub that featured in the soap and you can still get a pitcher of Ale to enjoy.

Arncliffe is a real jewel in the crown for the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is an excellent base if you are looking to experience the most idyllic scenery and best walking and cycling opportunities in the Yorkshire Dales.

The walks to Malham and Kettlewell are highly recommended, as well as visiting nearby Grassington and the ever popular Skipton with its weekly market and famous high street.

Get away from it all and enjoy Dales life at its very best.
