"Great location, although view somewhat blocked by adjacent buildings."
Quaint cottage; accomodation tight for six, particularly kitchen. Stairs need care. Night storage not ideal, and hot water ran out. No good areas for drying wet walking gear. Both waste bins full; can't have been emptied for some weeks. Excellent dog-friendly garden. Good local cafe. Parking and access for cars is poor; village car park does not allow overnight parking, so listing should be amended accordingly. Why not knock down the garage, replacing with car port (there is space for two cars) and extended kitchen.

Very convenient for the tea shop and the lovely walks. Had a lovely time. Thank you. The only drawback was the parking. Really hard to get in and out of the garage and made everything a bit stressful.

Parking tight , but this is covered in the advert. I found it easier to pull in tight to the garage rather than park in it. Garden enclosed and a lovely spot to enjoy a few moments of relaxation. Kitchen is well equipped but ensure you stock up on way to rosthwaite as the nearest shop is in keswick , a 20 min drive, although the flock inn does sell some essentials. 2 pubs within walking distance . Overall thwaite howe is a comfortable well equipped cottage . 2 fair sized double bed rooms and a smaller room with bunkbeds. Ideal for a young family or small group of adults. Living room comfortable with ample seating for 4- 5 adults. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at thwaite howe. Only holiday cottage I have rented where there was no welcome pack - not that this is essential but would be a nice touch .

There was plenty of space for two of us plus small dog. I am sure it would have been okay for four, but six might have been a bit of a push, especially in the rather small dining room. The location in the hamlet of Rosthwaite in the beautiful Borrowdale valley is wonderful. Disappointingly, unlike many of the rental properties we have visited, there was no welcome pack, not even a couple of tea bags and a drop of milk for a cuppa after a long journey. Remember to take your own, However the property has one very big drawback, the on-site parking. Although the instructions blithely say you can park in the adjoined garage, this is in fact a VERY tight space even for our relatively compact car, with stone walls very close indeed and severely restricting turning space to get in and out. I would only recommend this for drivers who are very confident to manoeuvre their vehicle in unfamiliar and intimidating tight spaces. There is however a small car park a short distance away if you are content to park off site. This should be made clearer on the property details rather than simply promising on site parking. Sadly for us continual worry about the parking rather marred what would otherwise have been a lovely holiday.
Thank you for the comprehensive review. The parking is described in our literature and there is a photograph of the garage area, only suitable for a small or medium sized vehicles. For many years our large Volvo estate car was parked in the garage. A public car park nearby(NT) is suitable for larger vehicles. The car parking was really difficult, as so snug and not really suitable for a big car.
Yes the garage is not suitable for very large cars, we will advise visitors. Car parks are available nearby. Property Owner

For keen walkers the peaks of Great Gable, Scafell Pike, Pillar, Bowfell and many other high mountains are very accessible.
Numerous valley and riverside walks can be undertaken from the cottage, without using a car.
The lower hill walk to the picturesque hamlet of Watendlath, with its pretty tarn and café selling home made produce, is especially recommended. Take the 20 minute drive over Honister Pass to Buttermere and you will discover another valley to explore.
You can enjoy the scenic walk right round the beautiful lake, with welcome refreshments available in the cafes and restaurants in Buttermere Village.
Take the short walk down to peaceful Crummock Water for further magnificent views.
For the adventurous a visit to the Honister Slate Mine is a must.
Descend into the deep caverns of this working mine or climb the high cable bridges for an exhilarating experience.
Enjoy a ride on the Keswick Launch, for a round trip on Derwentwater, where you can stop off to walk along the lakeside or make the climb up to Catbells to enjoy views of the Lake.
Visit Whinlatter Forest Park, to sample a wide range of outdoor activities, from mountain bike trails to ‘Go-Ape’ tree top adventures.
In the summer the forest hosts nesting ospreys; you may be lucky enough to see them in their natural habitat. Head to Ullswater for a range of water-based activities, hike to the stunning Aira Force Waterfall or enjoy a lakeside stroll in Glenridding and Pooley Bridge, where you can explore the local shops and enjoy a meal in one of the pubs or restaurants. Visit nearby Keswick, where you will find a wide range of shops, cafes and restaurants.
The town also has an excellent Theatre, a swimming pool, various museums and galleries, and hosts a popular street market selling local produce. However you choose to spend your time while in the Lake District, Thwaite How is an ideal base to return to, relax and plan your next day’s activities.

The popular town of Keswick is the holiday centre of the North of the Lake District and has plenty to offer the visitor at any time of year. The town boasts numerous shops and restaurants to suit all tastes, as well as offering miniature golf, excellent parks, the famous Theatre by the Lake, a charming cinema, the Pencil Museum, a climbing wall, fishing and great mountain biking opportunities, whilst the beautiful lake of Derwentwater at the head of the stunning Borrowdale Valley is only a few minutes walk from the town centre. Nearby, between Braithwaite and Buttermere is the beautiful Newlands Valley, while picturesque Bassenthwaite Lake is well worth a visit. From a gentle countryside ramble to a challenging hike up Skiddaw or the famous Catbells, there really is something for everyone. Visit Castlerigg Stone Circle, the Jennings Brewery and Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the Bassenthwaite Lake, or take a fabulous boat trip around Derwentwater. With plenty of attractions for the kids, lovely parks and the nearby Lake District Wildlife Park this is a great Lakeland destination whatever the time of year.
