  • "Our third stay at Birchmill Cottage, the last time being 7 years ago!"

The cottage was everything thing we remembered plus improvements. Perfect for the children as well as the grandparents, even the dog loves it here. Our only quibble was the neighbours playing very loud music every now and then but that is obviously nothing to do with the cottage. We look forward to a 4th visit, hopefully sooner than another 7 years!

  • "Lovely, very clean cottage in a quiet location."

The kitchen was well equipped with good sized fridge/freezer. Cute little garden which we sat out in lots. You don't have a view from the garden, which is a shame as the plants/ bushes obscure it but very pretty to sit in. There is a drive way between the cottage door and the garden leading to the other two cottages, these are residential and the neighbours were very nice (telling is about walks for our dog, we aren't walkers just enjoy ambles around, so perfect for us) and hardly used the drive. Walk to the bottom of the drive and there is a public footpath along the stream leading to the main road and the pub on there. We walked up once or twice and sat out for a drink and meal. The Wheatsheaf at Brigsteer was lovely for a meal too and dog friendly. The cottage is well placed for exploring the area. The ferry from Bowness to Ambleside was good with lots of information as you travel up and back. Would we come back again and recommend- definitely! We really enjoyed our stay thank you. Just one tiny negative - the wifi didn't reach all areas of the cottage and garden (old cottage with thick walls) and we had problems with phone signal - vodaphone. So had to go back in doors from the garden, or downstairs to use wifi. I did enjoy having phone free time and it was signal problems too but it did make it a bit harder to plan days out, set maps for routes, keep in touch with family etc Would it stop us going ago - no, it was only a minor inconvenience.

  • "Lovely cottage at the Lake."

It was very clean and well maintained and as advertised. The kitchen very well equipped, just missing a kitchen tong.Beds were very comfortable and main bathroom clean and huge. Enough information filed on how to use electrical equipments, safety gadgets and suggested places to go. It is very near Bowness on Windemere and many supermarket nearby. The place was a good size for 4 teens and 4 adults. Its ashame we cant use the fireplace with proper wood and it would be nice if check out is by 12nn. We really enjoyed our cottage life even for short time.

  • "We loved Birchmill Cottage."

We come to the Lake district every year to visit our son in Kendal. Over the years we have stayed at various cottages but this have by far been our favourite. Location for us was great, cottage clean and comfortable. Would highly recommend and we will be returning.

  • "Wonderful place to stay."

The cottage was very clean and the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to make meals. It’s very quiet and relaxing, and there are amazing views from every window. There are some great walks close by too, and it’s only a short drive to the tourist spots such as Windermere. We will definitely be back.

Lovely cottage very spacious and very well equipped Rain leaked in one bedroom Couple of things - don’t want to be asked to review my holiday on day 2 Don’t like being reminded I’m going home tomorrow and don’t expect to have to strip beds on departure for a cottage costing over £250 a night

  • "- House is well furnished and appointed and we had a lovely time - General cleanliness could have been better."

There was visible dirt in the en suite and the bathroom (mould / mildew and dust on flat surfaces); under the sofas was dirty with wrapping from a previous guest’s gifts; there was a used bandage under the bed in the second bedroom. Basically, a deeper clean is needed in my opinion. - Garden is lovely but it’s a shame there is no BBQ area.

  • "We loved it!"

The kitchen is great, really well laid out with pretty much every kitchen gadget available. The rooms are all lovely, comfy and it definitely feels more homely than a lot of the buy-to-let properties in the Lakes. Would definitely rent it again, and recommend it to others.

  • "This is a beautiful cottage in a wonderful location."

The facilities are excellent with an extremely well-equipped kitchen, excellent guidance manual, comfy beds and bedding, cosy furnishings, and lots of thoughtful details ( a useful torch, handy hooks in hallway). I would very happily recommend it and will almost certainly book to stay again.

  • "Cottage was lovely and clean."

Well equipped and great location. Loved our stay. Only minor points would be; not being able to check in until 4pm, but be out by 10. Also have always had a welcome pack in all places we have previously stayed. Obviously not required, but always been a appreciated as a thoughtful touch. The only one we were provided with was a cleaning gift box.

  • "I was very impressed by the overall standard of the property - the beds were super comfortable, the kitchen very well stocked, plenty of space available in the cottage, the lovely well cared for garden and ideally situated for a visit to the Lake District."

One thing to mention is that sometimes the tap water was very cloudy and as I wasn’t sure whether this was usual in the area or not, I just bought a 10 litre box of water for drinking.

Windermere 8 miles.

A historic market town with a fine reputation for shopping, Kendal nestles on the banks of the River Kent and is known as the Southern Gateway to the Lakes. Its old cobbled lanes and byways branch off the attractive main street, and the stone ruins of 12th century Kendal Castle sit perched on a hill with views over the town. Visit The Abbot Hall Art Gallery, its regular collection holding portraits by Kendal born George Romney and works by Turner and Ruskin, with other exhibitions through its links with the Tate. Both Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall with its superb Topiary Garden are nearby, as are limestone escarpments for easy walking, offering thrilling views of the Lakeland Mountains, the Howgills and Morecambe Bay. Kendal itself is ideally placed for exploring South Lakeland, the Yorkshire Dales and beyond. With other attractions such as Kendal Museum and the Museum of Lakeland Life, the fascinating Quaker Tapestry, Lake Windermere and the wider National Park within easy reach, Kendal provides a superb base for a relaxing break.
