  • "Gate described as green, we were looking for painted gate like the front door not one covered in lichen."

Three outside lights, none of which worked so steps into the building were not lit and dangerous as we had not taken a torch. 2 bulbs in main bathroom not working. Toilet seat broken which was mentioned previous reviews. Clean to a point but would suggest deep clean such as shelves and tops of wardrobes. Need to remove chipped crockery and provide drinking glasses for the number of people staying eg only one wine glass. Should mention steps from lounge to kitchen which could be difficult for an older person to negotiate. Lack of information on local facilities such as restaurants, shops etc.. lovely location and we were able to work around the issues mentioned.

  • "We spent an enjoyable week at Stone Arthur Cottage, it is a lovely property in a good location."

With plenty of walks and places to eat close by, there was no need to use the car at all. We felt the description of the cottage was not entirely accurate in respect of the surrounding views. There are wonderful views from the garden, but hardly any from inside the property. On a wet day, these would have been welcome. Several of the kitchen lightbulbs were not working, but we found replacements. Being unused to an AGA, it would have been helpful to know it needed to be switched on at the wall. Only one sheet mentioned this and we missed it initially. There were no cleaning products provided for kitchen or bathrooms, which we have come to expect at a holiday cottage, along with handwash. The wifi did not work at all.

  • "Wonderful location and a comfortable cottage full of character."

We did lots of great walks with out needing to drive and there are nice pubs for food close by. The WiFi does not work at all. We did have mobile data but it dropped out from time to time. The list of what is at the property is not so helpful and when I phoned the agent they said if it is not listed it won’t be there. Worth knowing there is a dvd player and hairdryer (although not listed). What we did wish we had was a washing up bowl. Overall we had a lovely time and would recommend the cottage. Also recommend walking to Alcock tarn, which is stunning.

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad you enjoyed your stay overall and hope to welcome to back soon. Property Owner

This is the second time we've stayed (last 2015). The last couple of years we have stayed in the Western Lakes but, glad we had a change this year. Stone Arthur was a fab location for Grasmere and ticked off a lot of walks that we wanted to do, Grasmere Lake and coffin route, Rydal Water amongst others. We would love to come back in the future. Cooking with the Aga was fine just took a little longer

  • "The cottage was so warm and comfortable, despite storms Isha and Jocelyn which decided to visit us while we stayed there."

As others have pointed out the wi-fi doesn’t really work but the phone signal was fine so we could use a hotspot for essentials. The Aga was great and the sofa and TV in the kitchen made it feel really cosy, even though it was very spacious.

  • "The cottage and setting was truly idyllic!"

Stone Arthur is stunning, plenty of room for 6 of us, cosy, peaceful and comfortable with stunning views out of every window. Great location on the outskirts of beautiful Grasmere and pub at the end of the drive. Cannot recommend enough, thank you! (Minor issue, if you need WiFi the key given in the welcome book wouldn't actually connect us, wasn't a problem for us though so didnt persue a resolution). (PLEASE DONT PUBLISH THIS SECTION BUT HAPPY TO PUBLISH ABOVE!!!!: only reason I scored less on cleanliness was due to finding a used sanitary pad at the back of a drawer of the dressing table of the main bedroom. We disposed of it so just FYI and clearly not the fault of the owner if bizarrely and grossly left by a previous guest!)

The location is fantastic with all the benefits of Grasmere easily accessible but without being caught up in the busyness of the village. The setting is beautiful with great walking available directly from the cottage. The cottage is well equipped and well kept. The Wi-Fi was barely working while we were there but otherwise everything was good. Hopefully we’ll be back next year!

  • "This was our second stay at Stone Arthur Cottage and, once again, we enjoyed a fabulous week there."

The cottage is well equipped, comfortable and its location allowed us to walk to local pubs/restaurants easily. Grasmere Village is only 10 minutes walk away and its location allows easy access to Windermere, Langdale and the Northern Lakes of Ulswater and Derwent Water. The absence of a W-fi signal, was not an issue for us. We were made aware before booking but this could be a problem for some people. Walks from the cottage was also possible, ie. Alcock & Easedale Tarns, Grasmere & Rydal Lakes etc. Definitely one of our favourites cottages to stay in this wonderful part of our Country.

Location great, sunny garden good for dining. The Aga cooker a bit of stumbling block for us, alternative hob would have been welcome. Perhaps a bit more in the way of little touches - soap, kitchen roll etc. And the welcome folder would benefit from more info. eg local walks, info on amenities. Overall a good experience.

The furniture is of a good standard and the master bed is very high! however all the mattresses are great. It is worth noting that the drive up the hill over the two cattle grids may get slippy in the winter and the last part to the car park is a bit tight. That said the kitchen is fantastic with every amenity, including double freezers washing machine massive fridge and everything you need.

  • "Very disappointing."

It's a really lovely house, just being badly managed: three main issues. Whilst most things were 'clean' overall, the house was covered top to bottom with cobwebs and spiders... felt like no-one had been in the house for months. We spent an hour or so de-cobwebbing the house. Secondly, the heating - no really guide how to use it and the upstairs thermostat was turned completely off, took us two days to find the right thermostat and get some heating upstairs. Finally, and most frustrating for me: the Aga. There are a dozen A4 sheets in the house saying not to change the Aga settings as it will be at the perfect temperature, yet when we arrived the electricity to the Aga was turned off and the gas turned down to the lowest possible setting (you could put your hand into the hot oven and touch anything, should be 210 degrees, was about 40 degrees). After two days managed to get the Aga up to temperature and working as planned... with the help of an Amazon Prime delivery of an oven thermostat. It was my wife's birthday and I needed to bake a cake! Luckily we didn't plan to cook with the oven on the first two days, that wouldn't have been possible.

  • "We love this property!"

We stayed for two weeks in 2021 and another two weeks this September/October. The location of Stone Arthur Cottage is stunning, and the property is exceptional. The best property I have rented in the Lake District. I would highly recommend it. The furnishings and fittings are of an extremely high standard, and it is a warm, inviting and cosy place to stay. It is clear that the owner has put great thought and care into all the finishing details, including the pictures. Having a complete set of Wainwright guides was a lovely touch. Thank you. My major constructive criticism is regarding the standard of cleaning. Perhaps during weeks when the property is vacant, priority could be given to this. During both stays it was noticeable that there was thick dust and old cobwebs in places. I think the cleaners probably have limited time to spend at each property, but in my view, a periodic deeper clean might help here. It was wonderful to cook on the Aga. Great for baking and roasts. Overall, the kitchen was very well equipped. We would draw the owner's attention to a food processer with missing parts. Not something we used, but I don't think it is in working order. Also, given the exceptional finish throughout, a nice casserole dish and a set of matching plates and crockery would be a brilliant addition. Thank you for another lovely stay at Stone Arthur Cottage.

  • "Stone Arthur cottage is a lovely old house full of character, with lots of room for the five of us and great garden area."

Personal preference is to be closer to Grasmere Village. There were a lot of cobwebs which we tried to hoover up but house could do with a deep clean rather than just the weekly turnaround clean, radiators were very dusty. Sofas in the lounge need restuffing, odd assortment of glasses, only 4 drinking glasses but lots of small wine glasses. Probably won't return to this property but will return to Grasmere.

  • "We liked the location as we walk loads it was in a great position for the the Kirk Stone Pass walks."

Also the property is well appointed. Could be a bit cleaner. Loads of cobwebs everywhere and the whole place could do with a good vacuum but the bathrooms seemed quite clean. The bin in the kitchen smells and could do with a good wash out. But overall not to bad. Wifi drove us mad. It was so intermittent. Sometimes it was quite good and but most of the time nothing at all. We ended up using hot spot on our phone. We probably wouldn’t return

  • "What a lovely location!"

Each morning you can wake up to the views and the sounds of the birds in the garden. The cottage is really comfortable and felt like a home away from home. It is a private property with some lovely outside space. It was great to be able to walk into Grasmere village so easily. Our only criticism was that the property wasn't very clean with crumbs left on the rug in the lounge and kitchen. Not fault of the owners but poor standards from Lakelovers. The instructions for putting the bin out weren't very clear which meant that we missed the pick-up and ended up taking it away ourselves. Watch that you don't get caught out with that mid stay. Overall we would definitely stay in this cottage again. It was a great find!

It was very clear, aired and ready for our arrival. We appreciated the bottle of red which we thought a nice touch and stared our holiday well. The cottage was very well positioned, close to Grasmere Village and offered the ability to walk direct from the cottage. Beautiful views from the cottage and very quiet location. Within walking distance of The Swan Hotel and Travellers Rest Public House.

On arrival, we realised the wifi and phone (both listed as facilities, were not working. We attempted to advise you early on the 11th October but there was a problem with your phones, we advised you of the problem later in the day when we were able to get through. Up to the point of our departure, neither was still working and we had received no update in spite of being assured that you had our mobile number. We also advised you that the freezer compartment door in the the Smeg fridge was broken and fell out of the fridge the first time the fridge door was opened, this was not a problem as the property has a separate freezer but we felt you needed to know

Great place to stay with great outdoor space and comfy facilities inside. Just outside Grasmere but only 15 minutes walk. 2 Pubs within 5 minutes. The property

Cosy comfort for six in the beating heart of Lakeland! This is an elegant and original slate-built farmhouse property that will appeal to everyone's internal lakelover.

The owners have sympathetically upgraded the property to the highest modern standards, while retaining the charmingly old-world character of Stone Arthur Cottage, and there is everything you could ask for here to provide the perfect Lakeland getaway! As soon you walk up to the gothic cathedral-style doors, you can tell this is a special and thoroughly authentic property.

From the archaic lintel above the wood-burner and the wonderful thick beams that line the ceiling in the living-room, to the beautiful floors and furniture echoed throughout this excellent property, antique wooden grandeur is everywhere! High quality, high comfort real leather sofas let you recline in luxuriant bliss near the blazing wood-burner, and the wonderfully spacious yet homely country kitchen is open to the living-room, and makes a great spot in which to enjoy those all important walkers' breakfasts before you hit the hills.

The bedrooms are generous and refined rooms, with the most wonderfully ornate and lavish antique wooden bedsteads, and ensure you wake well refreshed each morning to tackle the days activities, and the superb modern bathroom facilities will also help energise you into top form. Views to Grasmere lake itself and the fells all around make your cottage a real delight to stay in, and the location could hardly be better, perfectly central in the Lakes and offering a winning combination of adventure in all directions and blissful tranquility.

The most glorious scenery anywhere in England is all about you, and it goes without saying that the walking is second to none.

Smaller fells like Loughrigg and Helm Crag make for outstandingly beautiful rambles, and there are plenty of larger mountains to conquer as well as a multitude of leveller walks by the lake shores. This is Wordsworth country too, of course, so the cultural heritage is truly fascinating, and you can even walk up Greenhead Ghyll from Stone Arthur Cottage, and see the very sheepfold that inspired the poem 'Michael'.

And we fully recommend a visit to at least one of the homes of the famed poet; Rydal Mount, Allen Bank and Dove Cottage are all open for your enjoyment.

Please note: that the wifi is not always a reliable connection due to the area.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

GRASMERE

Ambleside 5 miles; Windermere 9 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.
