  • "WOW, what can I say."

It was my first visit to the lakes and it won’t be my last. Winster cottage is everything you need from a holiday let and more. The cleanest, best equipped holiday cottage I have ever stayed in. Thank you. Will definitely consider booking again real soon.

  • "Lovely, warm cottage which was very clean."

We liked the large conservatory. However the stairs to the front door are very steep and did not have a handrail. Also the bath and shower didn't have a grab rail .

Thanks for your comments. You have given us 100% on accuracy of listing, thanks. What is confusing is that on booking our cottage it accurately states there are steps down to the property, there is also photos on the Sykes website for you to clearly see. You did tell us you had read the accommodation details so would have seen the steps. If you struggled you could have easily avoided any steps and simply walked round the back which is completely flat, step free and an easy alternative as your car would have been there anyway. There is actually no reason anyone should have to walk down a step to go into the cottage. You marked us down a whole 25% for cleanliness even though you stated in your review it was very clean. We pride ourselves in providing spotless accommodation for our guests and people will see that every other review says our cottage is spotless. Again, you marked us down whole 25% for facilities . We have fantastic facilities for a holiday accommodation, providing everything from various flavours of teas, different coffees, hot chocolates, sauces and condiments, we go as far to even provide a slow cooker. We provide a washing machine, tumble dryer and I even provide the washing tablets!!! we give you everything you need, I can’t possibly think of anything else I could provide for you to give us another 25%. Again, you knocked us down 25% For comfort . we are constantly praised for comfort, I don’t know how much more comfort I could’ve provided for you !! for some reason you marked us down greatly on everything.. strange I am providing a beautiful holiday cottage with everything you could possibly need, I don’t feel we have to put grab rails and handrails in… it’s not a nursing home We usually have honest, wonderful reviews from lovely guests, but you can’t please everybody all the time. The sunroom was definitely the room we used most, it felt very claiming and great view for that peaceful morning coffee. Location is perfect for exploring, most activities we did were only 30/40 mins drive away. Walk into local town was 25/30 mins. Some lovely running routes. Bed in the front room for us personally was uncomfortable (mattress just not as firm as we are used to). Likewise, would not put us off going back as everything else was perfect. Clare, was a great host. Lots of communication before arriving and lots of information at the cottage about things to do within the area.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. We have provided a firm mattress in one bedroom and a medium mattress in the other so our guests can choose what is best for their comfort, I think you would agree everybody has different preferences to a mattress. We pride ourselves in providing a high level of comfort for our guests. Property Owner

Whether relaxing on the patio, in the conservatory or the lounge, it was totally relaxing. All mod cons to make your stay easier and extremely well equipped kitchen all added to our holiday. Absolutely beautiful location, very peaceful and the views out of every window are absolutely stunning! Our three year old enjoyed watching sheep, cows, swans, geese and even a heron! The house has been renovated to a beautiful standard and I’ve never stayed anywhere cleaner! It also smelt incredible! Lovely powerful shower in a very clean, bright bathroom. Everything is good quality ie linen and towels etc. So much character has been added during fhe renovation (there’s a photo album in the kitchen if you’re nosey like me!) The conservatory is such a fantastic place to sit and has air con to keep it a comfortable temp. The utility room was an added bonus, equipped with a washer and separate tumble dryer. Never thought I’d be doing washing on holiday but with a 3 year old and a baby it was inevitable! The cupboards are stocked like nowhere I’ve ever stayed, with washing detergent, loads of essential like condiments and array of full size packs of tea and coffee. The garden is large, flat and fantastic for children to run off some steam. A man came to cut the grass whilst we were there and was so friendly. Thanks so much for some lovely family memories!

Helen, thank you very much for taking the time to give us such wonderful feedback, it is truly so appreciated and lets us know that all the work we put in appreciated ,. It is huge inside with plenty of storage. We loved the views from the huge sun lounge & loved sitting out on the patio in the evenings. The only tiny negative for us was the sofa in the sun longe, it looks great but it was very low and reclined so gave us back ache but maybe it's Ok for others. Our bed was comfy, the shower was great & powerful, lovely bedding & fluffy towels. it was good to park the car at the bottom of the drive so the car was off road (really quiet road tho ) & the neighbours were lovely too. Lots to see and do in the area. When we spoke to the owners Claire & Jason they sounded lovely people and they are so proud of Winster Cottage and rightly so as it is a fantastic place. We can't praise Winter Cottage enough and we will definitely be returning! Thank you for a great holiday.

  • "We've just spent a week at the beautiful Winster Cottage and can honestly say it is fabulous."

The cottage is spacious with lovely views and in a quiet location and Clare and Jason have obviously put a lot of thought and effort into not only the renovation, which is beautiful but also with regards to furnishings and fitting out etc. Everything has been thought of. The well equipped kitchen has everything you could possibly need from cutlery, crockery, plenty of pots, pans, a large assortment of baking tins, glasses etc - we didn't find anything 'missing' so to speak. We found condiments, herbs, cooking oil, various teas, coffee and sugar etc in cupboards and fresh milk in the fridge. I mention these as we weren't aware of them and took a few items with us that weren't needed. The beautiful conservatory was our absolute favourite place to have breakfast every morning and chill every evening with a glass of wine. It's so lovely and comfortable with a beautiful view. We were lucky enough to have good weather which made the views front and rear stunning. The cottage is lovely and warm which meant my husband was disappointed that we didn't need the wood burner. I will mention the stairs in the cottage as a couple of people have mentioned them. There is quite a sharp bend in the stairs, however I managed without a problem and I have arthritis and had a hip replacement 6 months ago. Similarly there has been mention of steep steps down to the front door. There are 4 steps down and again I managed with no problem. Also you can go down the drive to access the side gate. To sum it up this is an absolutely beautiful cottage in a quiet location and in an ideal area for visiting the lakes. Don't hesitate if you're thinking of booking. We wouldn't stay anywhere else if visiting the area again. Thank you Clare and Jason.

Thank you so much Sharon for taking the time to write your kind words, they are really appreciated, so pleased you enjoyed your stay. I also thank you for passing on your very sensible comments about the outside steps, as you mentioned it is so easy to walk round the side if needed and very accessible so thanks again Property Owner

Had everything we needed for our week away with our 3 teenagers. The Winster river is just outside the door. Our sons loved to fish in it every evening and even caught a few Trout (which they released back into the river) The only thing I would say is the sofa bed in the mezzanine had a slow puncture and our youngest did wake to his bottom on the floor every morning. Unfortunately the property has 2 double beds and only 1 single bed meaning our boys would have had to share a double bed and no amount of bribery could persuade them to do that (18yrs and 13 yrs). Over all we would defiantly visit again. Perfect base for exploring the lakes.

Hi, glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for letting me know about the blow up settee , I’ll have to get it replaced, it must’ve been a very new problem. It does clearly state on the Sykes website that There are two double bedrooms and a single bedroom, the mezzanine is not designed as a bedroom, it is designed as an extra space for children, young adults to have as a area with the blowup settee as seating for them, it is not an additional bedroom Property Owner

  • "An interestingly designed and well equipped cottage that suited us perfectly for a week in the Lakes over Easter."

Ideally suited to one or two couples in double bedrooms, a fifth person can sleep in an additional single bedroom, although this is windowless and lacks storage space. The staircase is curved and steep, so you have to take care when moving heavy baggage, but is otherwise fine unless you have significant mobility issues. The bathroom is very nicely designed with a combined bath and shower unit. The ground floor is spacious with an excellent kitchen area and all the utensils that you are likely to need. A new, large and very lovely conservatory complete with heating and air conditioning is a super place to be in regardless of the weather; very spacious, it has plenty of seating space and a good dining table. For entertainment, there is a profusion of Smart TVs (but no DVD player). Although located in a fairly remote spot, we walked to Grange over Sands on a couple of occasions, which was a level stroll taking about 30 minutes, while it only takes a few minutes to drive back to the A590. We had a minor maintenance issue when we arrived (a fire alarm back-up battery was beeping) and needed a ladder to reach the alarm. This problem was sorted out very quickly and efficiently by the owners. We stay at a good many holiday homes and recommend Winster Cottage as being well above average.

  • "Lovely cottage, one of the nicest we have stayed in."

Had everything you could ask for. The property was described as 3 bedroom, consisting if 2 doubles and a single. However, the description does not tell you that the single bedroom is actually a small box room with no window and no storage. Even with the radiator switched off, in March, it was sweltering in the bedroom. We picked Winster cottage as myself and my wife were going away with our mother's, one 86 and one 84. Both are frail and like their privacy hence wanting 3 bedrooms. Unfortunately, one of them had to use this makeshift bedroom and it spoilt the holiday for one of them. As much as we loved the cottage, we would have booked elsewhere had we known. We did contact the owner who seemed to think we were trivialising when we explained this. I think you need to be aware of this and amend the description as you are not advertising the property accurately.

The photos and reviews suggested it was going to be good but they didn’t portray the ‘wow factor’! We do lots of self catered holidays and this is best looking place we’ve stayed. Lovely and warm on arrival and everything you might need. Water pressure a little low upstairs so allow plenty of time if you want a bath - but worth the wait, like the rest of the cottage - the bathroom is spacious. We have family in Kendal & Windermere - both easy and quick to drive to from the cottage. It also only takes about half an hour to walk to Grange (some of the walk is along the promenade) where there are lots of places to get coffee and cake! Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend booking Winster Cottage and would happily return again and again.

No expense has been spared. The owners have left a very interesting photo album of the before/work in progress/after pictures which shows all of the work that has gone into this project. The cottage is in a lovely peaceful location but very close to Grange Over Sands. We found it was the perfect base to visit the Lake District and surrounding areas. The cottage was very clean and well equipped with a very stylish kitchen with a superb, easy to use cooking range. However, we found a couple of things were missing - a tea pot and Champagne/Prosecco glasses. We guessed they had been broken and not replaced as there was only one left. We also found that there was no comfortable provision for eating meals. The breakfast bar is fine for breakfast but only space to comfortably seat 3 people. It is not ideal for dinner in the evening. The owners have provided a fold up garden type table and chairs which is stored away but it is not really adequate or comfortable for 4 people. On the other hand, the outdoor patio furniture is plentiful and comfortable. Extreme caution is needed using the stairs and steps leading down to the entrance of the cottage. Overall, it was a pleasure to stay in this accomodation.

It was a 90th birthday treat for our Mum who had a wonderful time. She was perfectly capable of managing stairs and steps to the rear entrance. We have no negative comments to make but unfortunately forgot to write our comments in the book. Please pass these on to the owners as we will definitely consider booking cottage again should we wish to visit the area. Many thanks for your assistance

Thanks for your lovely and very sensible feedback. If your lovely 90 yr old mum has no problem getting down the stairs it puts the younger ones to shame!!! Property Owner

  • "It is obvious that the cottage owners are new to the holiday letting experience."

We all really liked the property but feel we need to make you aware of a few issues the we feel are health and safety issues. Firstly the stars in the property are very narrow and steep. There is no real hand rail except a rope leading up. This rail was broken by my 12 year old son when he help on to stop himself from falling. When we contacted the owner she was very rude and accused us of deliberately damaging her property. Pictures have been sent to you. These stairs need to have something done to make them safer. Someone will seriously hurt themselves. The second issue is that the third bedroom is really only a cupboard with a bed. There are no windows and no ventilation. My son was so hot and stuffy that he had to sleep on the sofa downstairs. I am sure this is also a health and safety issue and am sure would contravene building regulations. We are very glad we are not staying there this week as that room would be un-usable. I feel the owner need to understand the issues and address them. These are lawsuits waiting to happen!

We are very experienced holiday let owners who take great pride in providing comfort and luxury accommodation. What I don’t expect is a customer to come into our accommodation and wreck it. The damage was so bad we had to cancel bookings to rectify all the damage. The damage caused left us with a bill of over £900. Our cottage has never been so badly damaged but when I saw the pictures what you had done I asked you to leave, at this point I knew you would go out of your way to leave terrible feedback. But owning a holiday home and renting it out doesn’t give people the right to wreck it and then try to ruin your business by leaving terrible feedback Property Owner

  • "Personally Wifi and a table and chairs in the kitchen would have enhanced what is a great house in a beautiful location."

We used the wooden garden table which we left up for the duration of our stay but couldn't understand why a permanent table and chairs was missing, when you can see the owners have renovated the house to such a high standard. Kitchen was well equipped, brilliant oven, there were champagne glasses but couldn't find any wine glasses. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend the property.

  • "LOVED the cottage, the location and Grange over Sands too."

Owners had put out little extras too which were a lovely welcoming touch. Bedding etc was fabulous. Cottage is stunning. The only thing that would improve this cottage is the addition of WiFi. I stumbled across it by chance as normally WiFi is a “must”. However as it was only 5 days thought we would take the chance. Definitely missed it as mobile only had intermittent coverage.
