  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay it’s a pity it rained we would have loved to sit in the garden as the views are beautiful."

The barn is lovely and cosy and the wine and biscuits, jam were a nice surprise. We had everything we needed I would recommend it to friends and family.

  • "Very Very disappointed with owners never picked up my call, only once replied after me calling 20 times for some instructions and amendments."

Place was very nice with such a beautiful neture surrounding, all facilities was good but no proper cutlery, no welcome pack which we usually always received where ever we go, the big disappointment was they didn't bother to even leave small gallon of milk and sugar, we have arrived late and thought there will be suger and milk so we then have to run/drive to town to get milk & sugar so that we can have cup of tea after hectic day. I tried to ring several times to owner to ask if they can provide bit of milk and sugar as we were exhausted after long walking day. Overall stay was good country side peaceful place.

  • "Your description stated that there was an enclosed patio, but there isn't an enclosed patio and there is no area that is secure for a dog."

Which meant we had to keep ours on a lead at all times for her safety and to stop her approaching the caged cats that were on the patio adjacent to the front door of the barn. In fact, quite a bit of your description is a bit fanciful in its accuracy! The barn is comfortably furnished, and the bedding is of good quality, excellent shower and it the barn was pretty clean, although some of the window frames could do with a good scrubbing and the carpet is WELL past is sell by date and very stained. The kitchen equipment and crockery look like it is leftovers from another kitchen! Far too much old and chipped crockery in the cupboards, a good basic, reduced size, matched set would be much more appropriate. The pan rack blocks access to the dishwasher, but if there were less useless items in the cupboards, the pans could go in the cupboards and the rack could be discarded. I think the coffee machine was the black item in the back of one of the window ledges, but it was so far back, there was no way of reaching it, luckily there was a good cafetiere present. There are no basics provided i.e. milk, sugar, coffee, tea, soap, handwash, but there is a good supply of cleaning products, but no dishcloth, just one small sponge. The fridge is also ready for the scrap heap, the shelves don't fit, so they are all on a backwards slope, the door doesn't have proper bottle shelves, so anything you put in there, falls out when you open the door and the bottom of the fridge was quite dirty, with evidence of past spills. Welcome basket of biscuits and wine was nice, but possibly the basics would be more useful. Information folder is scruffy, out of date and indicates that any queries should be addressed to Sykes Offices not the owner, not helpful when you can't get the tv to work on a Saturday night! Talking of which, the TV picture was very washed out and despite managing to alter the settings to get a watchable screen, it kept reverting once it had been switched off, very irritating! We met the housekeeper, who was lovely, very helpful with regard to recommendations and information, but it did appear that she wasn't given much time to prepare the barn for guests, since her duties also included the owner's cottage! The dishwasher was full of clean crockery when we opened it! However, at least we knew which items were ready for use! One huge positive of the barn is the garden, which is beautiful and extremely well maintained, however, it is not separate from the owner's section, so is not dog proof and obviously the caged cats are right next to your holiday front door. There is also a very steep/high curb from the lane to the parking area, which may not be suitable for some low cars, this should be mentioned in your description. The location was peaceful and quiet, yet close to the town and good walks. Nearby Fairfield mill is definitely worth a visit, excellent cafe and very interesting history.

Fantastic location, both beds could do with an alternative mattress due to lack of support but for the time we stayed not a huge issue for us, we enjoyed the fire which caused us to be far too hot and we had to open the porch door. Lots of home from home comforts and everything you could need for a stay we love the location and can definitely recommend the haddock paddock chip shop in the village and also the coffee morning in the church. The access to the drive has a really high edge which may not be suitable for low cars. The wifi was a bit intermittent but it always came back on! Short hike if you like walking but need a torch at night for part of it. Loads of places nearby to drive to. We went to Kendal and Morecombe for the day and also enjoyed browsing round Sedbergh. Note that in Sedburgh there are no carry out places apart from one chip shop which was closed for a fortnight when we were there. There are some lovely pub/restaurants and an Italian and cafes for during the day. We ate at a couple of the dog friendly pubs in Sedbergh Would recommend the Red Lion. So friendly and lady kindly reserved a quiter space in the lounge for us. Food was excellent. Regarding accommodation, pretty barn conversion attached to owners home and cottage garden. Has all you need by way of kitchen equipment, comfy seating, super powerful shower and very cosy environment. Two good sized bedrooms set up as doubles but one converts to singles if needed. Lovely bed linen and liked the quirky cottage style windows and barn door glazing reaching to the upper floor. Didn't need log burner or heating as nice and warm when we were there. Sky tv and good wifi. Also has a further convenient downstairs loo. Owner lovely lady on phone if needed. Even left some welcome treats, enjoyed the Sauvignon thank you so much! Couple of things if you have dogs. We had 2 little Lhasas and the really pretty garden was a bonus for letting them out early doors and throughout our stay. Mostly enclosed but the 2 large gates at entrance are quite gappy for small dogs, would suggest to owner they just need chicken wired to make it more secure. Also owners cats go in from the house to their enclosed run but this is not fenced off from guest barn so your dogs can walk up path to it, if not on leads. May cause barking if they are not used to cats. Just for information, the entrance to the lane leading up to the property is easy to drive past and we circled the area twice and drove into neighbours by mistake. Suggest after you cross the narrow bridge, look for first white farmhouse on left and it is a sharp left next to their driveway. You go down a narrow lane just one car width for just a few yards leading to next white farmhouse you see. Go to driveway on white side of buildings and you will be at correct building, go past owners car through double gates and barn is on left. It is so peaceful and relaxing and I would love to return some time.

It was tucked behind the owners house so not visible with fantastic views, but once we knew where it was we were delighted. It was secluded, quiet, but also close to everything that you could walk everywhere. Beautiful walks direct from the house. The owner lives next door and was lovely and accommodating. I understand some comments regarding the upstairs bedrooms having windows facing each other, but it did not affect us and I think you could do something about it if you were uncomfortable. Property had everything you were likely to need. The only small problem we had was the cleanliness of the property. Many of the pots actually had food in them, the dishwasher did not seem to work and there was a shelf in the fridge that we removed as it was so dirty. We received a lovely welcome gift and would not hesitate to recommend, our little furry family member also enjoyed the lovely secure gardens and made friends with the cats.

A very comfortable cottage with a great shower! The only slightly negative point is the (viewing?) window in the two bedrooms. The wine and biscuits were a lovely touch. The lanes to the cottage are quite narrow and we suggest you reverse into the driveway to make it easier upon leaving the next morning to go on out and visit the surrounding area. The Howgill Fells can be seen from the drive and are stunning in the early morning and evening setting of the sun. The weather was not very kind to us on our week but there again we were in the North part of England. The lakes were stunning as always but Windermere was very over crowded and we couldn't believe how many visitors were going mask free. Our only niggles about Barn Cottage are that the king-size bed mattress is very very soft, if you suffer from bad backs at all use the double bed. The 3 piece suite is again very soft and we found it uncomfortable but are used to recliners at home( and we can't have everything when not in our own home) . Also a few baking trays in the kitchen would be helpful. This area is absolutely beautiful and Barn Cottage is a lovely place to stay if those few niggles were looked into.

I also take my dog. One of the essentials for our visit is SKY TV, as it is dark early in November and my parents like to relax and watch certain programmes (the rest of the year they look after their 3 grandchildren under 6 years of age). There was clearly some issue with the TV. I was told it had SKY Movies by the owner. We could only get 1 movie channel on (Sony TV), and about 8 channels in all, so we were extremely limited. The owner didn't seem overly fussed about sorting this out promptly, and told us SKY were coming to fix it the following week, as we were leaving the cottage at the end of the holiday. I also mentioned to Sykes Cottages and they couldn't have been less concerned in my opinion...I expected better. I treasure these holidays that I provide for 2 very special people who aren't in the best of health at the moment, and it was tarnished somewhat by lack of action or interest on the part of Sykes in particular. I'm frustrated in Sykes and their snarky "what do you want to happen" questioning to me. How can I answer when I don't know the options? I am frustrated that I didn't receive the experience I paid for. The cottage was lovely and pretty much everything was there which was needed. The shower is awesome! The owner was lovely and I don't mean it to be a criticism of her.

  • "A super cottage with a very friendly welcome from the owner."

We hope to return not only because The Barn is a lovely place to stay but, due to the 'Beast from the East' also paying a visit, we couldn't get out to explore the area! Hard to think of anywhere nicer to be snowed in and the wood burner kept us really warm.

  • "A very nice property."

Only drawback was the extremely narrow lane leading up to it and awkward angle to get into the property. This should be mentioned before people book.

A wonderful location, lots of great walks on the doorstep but also quiet enough to shut off from the outside world. Sedbergh a short walk away, full of information, great cafés and friendly locals.

About the location

SEDBERGH

Kendal 11.5 miles; Kirkby Lonsdale 11.8 miles, Hawes 15.8 miles.

The attractive old market town of Sedbergh (pronounced Sed-Ber), with its old-world atmosphere, is not only set in the magnificent western dales of the Yorkshire Dales National Park but is also close to the rugged eastern fells of the Lake District. The town, with its narrow streets, little shops, traditional pubs, famous school dating back to 1525 and its 12th century church, has been a thriving community for hundreds of years, with a market dating from the 13th Century. Leading from Sedbergh is Dentdale, the jewel of the Yorkshire Dales with its rolling hills and dry-stone walls, stretching 14 miles from the windswept moors below Whernside to the confluence of the Rivers Dee and Rawthey. At the centre of the dale is Dent, with its cobbled streets, which has existed since Norman times and nearby Dent railway station is on the renowned Settle-Carlisle railway line. There are three golf courses nearby, as well as tennis, riding, and fishing, and the area is a paradise for walkers, ramblers, runners, and cyclists. This, together with the tranquillity of the surrounding valleys, the two National Parks and it being England's book town, makes an ideal year-round holiday destination.
