  • "A delightful cottage."

Modern clean fresh interior & had everything we needed for a few days break away. Attention to detail shows throughout the property. The kitchen was adequately equipped for what we needed. The small courtyard was just that but when you have an abundance of beautiful sights to explore the back yard wasn’t a priority for us on this occasion. We were very lucky to have a parking spot right outside the property. As the weekend approached the struggle for parking was apparent around the town. Don’t forget to display your parking permit as the parking warden is out & about early in the mornings! If you have mobility issues the stairs could be a little steep for some but all in all we were very happy with the property for ourselves. Only a couple suggestions, a covering for the back door, I placed a scarf over the door just for privacy. Also a door mat by the back entrance to wipe feet would be ideal to save the floors having to be wiped when that door was used. Would be more than happy to stop at this property again. (Could the owner email the colour of the paint used in the bedroom please). :)

Many thanks for the lovely feedback and suggestions which we will action The colour is a farrow and ball white called shadow white. We just get it colour matcyed ! Property Owner

  • "We loved the house, the location was perfect we got parking on the same road every day , it was lovely and clean and the furniture and fit out was new and modern which we loved."

Walking distance to all pubs and high street and we took a nightly walk to Windermere park which is really lovely if you have a dog or children. There was one thing we couldn’t get our heads around and that was the outdoor space, so much money and effort had gone in to the house but outside was horrible. It was really dirty, moss everywhere, broken lights hanging from the wall. There is the opportunity to have a really lovely little space to sit out with lights a canvas cover and flowers etc but literally no effort at all or thought had gone into it. Such a shame.

The house was so clean and spotless, we loved our stay here. Parking permit was very convenient too and we never had a problem finding parking within a 5 min walk.

  • "Upon our arrival we found dog urine under the kitchen table which our dog obviously ran straight to !"

the floors in the kitchen, living room and stairs were pretty filthy, we could see crumbs, dirt and dog hair. i called Sykes who said they would try getting hold of housekeeping. in the meantime i started sweeping and mopping the floors as we had a long journey, needed to remove the urine for obvious reasons and my grandaughter was running around without shoes. the cleaner did attend the property but at this point i’d virtually cleaned the entire floors. she insisted she had cleaned the flooring, not sure then how there was urine all over the floor under the table !! It’s a shame to have had such a negative experience as the house is very comfortable and spacious. the house accommodates 5 and there are only 2 pans, one being very small so i’m not sure how a family of 5 would cook meals, we struggled. i also think the owners should consider a welcome pack, this is the first accommodation i’ve come across that doesn’t have one- doesn't need to be much but it’s a nice touch. Unfortunately i would not be able to recommend this property to others given the condition we found it in and goes without saying i wouldn’t return. i got home yesterday and still neither Sykes or the owners have provided an apology or good will gesture which is very disappointing

Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry you were disappointed with the property. I can see on the system that the cleaner went to rectify the issues you raised and she was refused entry to the property by yourself, as you diddn't give us the opportunity to correct any issues or provide us with any photographs we can't offer you anything. As this is self-catering accommodation a welcome pack is not provided as standard, the issues have been reported to the housekeeping manager. Property Owner

  • "Downstairs is lovely apart from there only being 1 saucepan and 1 frying pan!"

Not really ideal for cooking every night. The house is very much half and half. Nice bathrooms. Bedrooms not the best and the upstairs lounge is not looking great. The paintwork on the stairs banisters is horrid to touch as very sticky. The freezer was frozen over and we had to get someto sort it out as the door would not shut.

Just lacks outside space. Could also do with a booster for the upstairs shower as it would s unusable when someone is using downstairs shower.

  • "Great house, super comfy beds, ideal location, loved the downstairs kitchen/living room space."

Had a fabulous holiday here. Just to bring to your attention, water in bath drains away very slowly when showering. Yard floods due to downpipe in Salisbury Place being uncoupled when raining heavily.

  • "Lovely property, perfect location right in the centre of Windermere and easy to walk everywhere."

Could do with a mat at the back door. We used this door quite a bit when walking into town. Also a blind or curtain at this door for privacy as door is overlooked by neighbouring properties. Could do with a few more tins for oven. Radiator in small bedroom was noisy at night. Otherwise lovely house and would definitely stay again. Highly recommended.

  • "We enjoyed our stay at the cottage."

Location was perfect for amenities and the rooms had obviously been updated recently. We spent most of our time downstairs in the kitchen lounge area. The small lounge on the ground level was redundant as a lounge and would make more sense to make it a small bedroom instead. My only negative was the small outside space which was unkept and not inviting . A few planters and some hanging baskets is all it would take to improve.

  • "Property was lovely."

Only criticism short on kitchen accessories pans. The outside space could do with a little TLC to make it more inviting to sit outside. The inside of property was lovely and met all our needs. We have stayed in other properties and a welcome pack was always a lovely surprise so maybe this might be an idea. Would recommend for location and would visit again.

  • "Had a wonderful few days."

The newly refurbished ground floor made for an excellent space to relax after a day walking, and the kitchen well equipped for anyone self-catering. Excellent bathrooms on upper and ground floors and comfortable bed. Didn’t really make us of the middle floor, and while older than the other two, was perfectly fine. Parking wasn’t always outside the front of the property, but no more than a minute’s walk down the adjoining road. Location excellent, close to all the local amenities. Would highly recommend.

Thank you for your feedback. We are really glad you enjoyed your stay with us. We hope to welcome you again soon. Owner relations team - Lakes Cottage Holiday Property Owner

  • "A number of issues- on a positive, the beds were comfortable."

Location was a definite plus and the cottage was well equipped. The broken glass that was left in the cupboard on our arrival I left on the worktop! The cottage was very tired and dated aside from the basement level which was very comfortable and warm- however although it was stated that the fuel was included, no logs were provided for the woodburner - just kindling. We found a dirty cotton bud by the shower, the drainage was so slow in this downstairs bathroom, water gushed out from the shower tray which was mopped up with the bathmat. The 'yard' was unusable- filthy dirty and not as the photo! no outdoor light but a security light which stayed on for approx 15 seconds. Next doors gutter turned the yard into Niagara Falls...it rained a lot during our stay. It feels like the property is part way through a renovation- the bathroom bath had peeling enamel, lifting cushion flooring and the electric shower was very poor. I was extremely disappointed in this property which we had selected for my 60th birthday with my 'children' - the WiFi didn't work. An outside light at the front would have been helpful as we were scrambling about in the dark trying to open the key safe on arrival- after 4pm is DARK! I feel the property is over priced and to say we were all disappointed doesn't cover it. You could publish my feedback but dont feel obliged- we left early n Sunday morning and decided we would be happier at home

  • "The following email was sent on 2/10/21 but no response was received: Just a slight concern."

Not a major issue but just want to make you aware of the following: 1/ The fridge had not been cleaned out, from the previous occupants (it still contained a part bottle of milk). The salad drawer contains a dried spillage. 2/ The freezer had also not been cleared out, from the previous occupants (it still contained an opened bag of frozen potato wedges) 3/ The wheelie bin is full with the lid partly opened. I managed to compress the contents in order to close the lid. However this means that we have no room to put any of our rubbish. After reading the instruction, in the property, we discovered that the bin collection is on Thursday, so it would appear that the previous occupants were not aware of this. The instruction were found on the top shelf of the bookcase, perhaps these should be more prominently displayed.

  • "St Mary's cottage was a very comfortable cottage in an excellent location within Windemere."

Despite some wetter summer weather than we had hoped for we enjoyed the surrounding countryside with some great walks, cycle rides and canoeing. The traffic between Windemere and Ambleside however was a bit heavy. The house was very comfortable and well equipped. It would be nice to have more of a manual and visitor information. The outside space is limited and spoilt by both the smell from an industrial bin placed just outside and a leaking gutter on the adjoining property.

  • "Nothing to do with the cottage itself but we couldn’t sit outside or have the windows and doors open as next door’s large bin was full and the smell was horrendous."

The bin is situated tight against the cottage’s back wall and was overflowing with rubbish, so they couldn’t close the lid.

St Mary's Cottage is a beautiful stone mid-terraced cottage, located in a quiet area of the centre of Windermere.

Set over three floors, this welcoming cottage is the perfect place for a family holiday in the heart of the Lake District.

As you enter the cottage on the ground floor, the hallway has its own boot and coat area, perfect for keeping outdoor gear out of the way when you've been hiking.

On this floor, you'll find a cosy sitting room with a flat-screen TV and DVD player.

The first of the double bedrooms is also on this floor.

Down on the lower ground floor, your main sitting room has a stunning feature fireplace, and a wall-mounted 40in Smart TV, with a music system.

The kitchen/dining room is beautifully tiled and has all the appliances you need for great home cooking.

A shower room completes the lower ground floor, and there is access to a small rear yard for some private outdoor space.

On the first floor is a lovely family bathroom, a single bedroom and the delightful master bedroom.

You'll also find a handy boiler cupboard, with a washing machine to take care of all those muddy clothes from having fun outdoors.

There's not a huge amount of outdoor space as the cottage is in the centre of Windermere, but you still have a private, secure courtyard to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air, and with Windermere Lake practically on your doorstep, it's only a quick trip in the car to enjoy the amazing countryside of the Lake District.

You'll be spoiled for choice with Windermere's bars, shops and restaurants only a short step from your front door, and Windermere Lake and the cinema are only a three minute car trip, or a 25 minute leisurely stroll away, with hiking, boat trips and cycling galore.

You're also near the railway station and local bus routes perfect for getting out and about.

With Ambleside and Bowness within easy reach, there's plenty to do when you explore further afield.

Try Wray Castle and the Beatrix Potter Gallery at Ambleside, take a tour of Loughrigg Fell or the incredible view of the falls at Stockghyll Force.

Bowness also has a cinema, and there's more for fans with the World of Beatrix Potter.

The Old Laundry Theatre provides plenty of entertainment year round, and if you're a foodie, try some of the town's eateries, such as the Arts Bar and Grill, Caffe Riva or the Flying Pig Pub.

Whether you're a keen hiker, golfer, watersports fan or a foodie, there's so much to do in Windermere and the surrounding areas, and St Mary's Cottage makes a perfect base for family holidays.
