Nice quiet site, short walk to amenities in a beautiful setting. The standard of the lodge itself was first class and definitely hoping to go back again. Would definitely recommend!

  • "Squirrel lodge was beautiful, lovely decor, clean and on a quiet site within easy walking distance of Gargrave including a coop shop and pubs and plenty of places to visit near by."

We found the locals really friendly too. The beds were really comfy and the property was lovely and warm with great instructions for how to adjust if you did need to do so. Clear instructions on how to use appliances was great. Could do with some more sharp knives in the kitchen but otherwise plenty of cups and dishes etc. the tv in was a little strange that you could only seem to watch what was on the main tv not the bedroom tvs individually - either some clearer instructions for this or sorting it so they work independently would be great, particularly since there is no wifi at the property. Overall a great stay and would stay again. Thanks

It is very well equipped with glass casserole dishes, bowls and measuring jug, sieves as well as 3 saucepans and 3 different sized frying pans and roasting tins. Instructions provided for all appliances. Fairy liquid, cloth, tea towel and dishwasher tabs provided. There is a utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer and there is a hairdryer in the main bedroom. Loads of storage. It is the best lodge that we have ever stayed in. Gargrave is a lovely village with walks along the river and the canal.

  • "This is a lovely comfy lodge."

Just a couple of points that would take it to 5 stars Broadband would have been good, couldn’t get good signal on the phone either. It was great in some ways to be off the Net but I needed to check another ongoing booking, plus weather was very wet so I’d have liked to have been able to have watched a decent film in the evening. I was slightly concerned about the lack or recycling instructions. Everything in one bin into another one on the site. This needs addressing. Can’t imagine someone going through the big site bin. Finally the guy in the corner, who is a resident, is inconsiderate with noise. Notably his unnecessary loud music at 8 am some mornings. Given it was raining we didn’t sit outside. Had we done so it would have been intrusive. The Cabin was well appointed with new sofas. Great bathrooms. En suite is a small wet room. Great for myself with mobility issues, but not wheelchair wet room if anyone interprets it as such. I always take a shower seat.

  • "Disappointed on arrival after long journey not to even have a pint of milk or any sort of welcome pack."

Garden unkempt, decking green and potentially slippery when wet. Fortunately only one day of torrential rain which found a leak in the hall coming from the skylight we think. Settee and one chair very low and worn, not good for three OAPs!! Had beautiful weather for the most part and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in Gargrave.

  • "Having enjoyed Squirrel Lodge last year, though leaving a note for the owner regarding two or three maintenance issues, we were disappointed to see those same issues remained this year."

The sofa and easy chair are so saggy that we had to use the cushions for the outdoor seating to boost them, but they really are past very uncomfortable and past their sell-by date. We phoned the manager of the site to discuss these problems, along with the frequent noise made by the man in the corner Lodge, who resides there permanently and has absolutely no consideration for the guests of the other lodges. On the positive side, the beds and pillows and outdoor furniture are very comfortable and the showers excellent. The central heating is very easy to adjust to personal comfort. It's such a shame we had these problems, because the lodges themselves are really lovely, we love the site, Gargrave and the excellent Mason's Arms. We would love to return but these things do need dealing with first, especially the need for comfortable easy seating in the lounge area.

We do have new sofas on order, they just haven't arrived yet. We hope they will be with us in the next 2 weeks. Property Owner

The lodge was very clean & spacious. The location is perfect for the dales or the coast .It was good to be back although I ate too many pies! What a joy to wake up and hear the song thrush and the mistle thrush, we even heard oyster catchers. Yes the road has potholes but at 5mph this didn't pose a problem and they were repairing some on the day we left.

  • "Generally a luxury lodge."

But some niggles due to poor maintenance. Leaking skylight in hall making floor wet and slippy (not new judging by the stains). Wardrobe doors need greasing as two were difficult to open: lights inside one bedroom wardrobe didn't come on. Three main dining plate set plus one! Sofa & easy chair padding poor quality: in need of updating. Bedding, towels and everything else were all good. No sign on the road to identify the site location and the path to the lodge had a few potholes - not the best first impression. Our lodge had a trailer and other machinery next to it making it feel like a builders yard rather than a luxury lodge. So, generally a good lodge but it needs some maintenance (mentioned above & e.g., treat the wood decking, outside roof timbers, etc) before it deteriorates too much.

Thank you for the feedback. It is not poor maintenance, we have had a busy summer of back to back bookings so sometimes it is hard to completely fix things such as the skylight during this period unless we cancel peoples holidays. Also we have repaired the skylight in the past but until it rains very heavy again it is hard to know if the fix has worked! It's the same with the wardrobe door it is hard to fix these things in a busy period with a 3hr turn around. These will be jobs repaired in the coming weeks/months. Thank you Property Owner

Two very minor issues, main bedroom bifold wardrobe doors had dropped slightly and caught on carpet making them difficult to open, Kitchen knives could do with being sharpened. That said accommodation was excellent, and doors opening onto a private deck was lovely, as were the visits from a family of ducks! The property was just a short walk into the village, for pubs and tea house, and good road links to dales and surrounding areas

  • "We had a lovely stay but there were a couple of niggles that bothered us."

Firstly, the windows in the bedrooms are not safe for guests with small children. They open at floor level with a drop outside - our two-year-old likes to hide behind curtains - he could have easily fallen out so we had to keep them shut. Secondly, just a couple of maintenance issues - the kitchen knives are blunt and the guttering is blocked. Also, the locked main gate to the complex is broken and standing ajar.

The beds and pillows were really comfortable and we appreciated that one of the easy chairs in the lounge area was a bit higher and firmer. The shower in the ensuite was really good and it was so helpful having shelves for shower gel etc in both there and in the main bathroom. The Mason's Arms is a really friendly, welcoming pub serving good food and we liked it so much we ate out rather more than intended! It's a very popular pub so best to book a table in advance if you want to eat there. The Dalesman Cafe is a fascinating place as apart from the home-baked cakes, it's also like a kind of museum surrounding the room with old advertising posters and other things, whilst you can get traditional sweets in another part of the shop - a gem. Overall we really enjoyed our holiday and have already decided we want to go again!

The lack of wifi is unacceptable in this day and age, and especially considering how much the lodge costs. Cushions and a parasol would have been a welcome addition. And the site where the lodge is situated could do with smartening up. When you approach it looks unfinished and not very attractive and the view from the main bedroom isn't great- a garden shed and machinery being used on site. It should be smartened up and something built to disguise it.

Thank you for your feedback following your holiday at Squirrel Lodge, this is not typical of the comments we receive for this property. The lodge doesn't have WIFI and is not advertised with this feature. The owner has ordered a new parasol and rattan furniture and this is due to be delivered today. The site is very well maintained. The garden shed is visible on the photographs of the property and is essential to store items away. The owner did advise prior to your holiday that there was a new lodge being delivered to the site during your break. Machinery is not usually present. The owner did leave a further note and compensation for this one off event. Once again, we thank you for your comments. Property Owner

What amazing accommodation, everything you need is provided. We are Grandparents with a grandson aged 9 and granddaughter aged 6. Squirrel Lodge was perfect. There is so much around the area for them to do. Aireville Park in Skipton has a brilliant skate park for scooters and bikes. It has a brand new play area and a tree top adventure. The swimming pool is in the Sports Centre within the park. You can easily walk into Skipton through the park and on the tow path. If it is raining why not try ten pin bowling, the Plaza Cinema, the Play Gym or Coffee and Clay in Skipton. We visited Skipton Castle and did the Castle Woods walk as Nature Detectives. The Welly Walk at Bolton Abbey from the stepping stones to the Strid is a must, with all the obstacles along the way, we spent a couple of hours with them playing on the ship and in the sand at the Strid end. The day ended with paddling back at the stepping stones. Why not try a day by the side of the River st Burnsall, its a fabulous day out. A bucket, a fishing net [yes we did catch fish], and a small dinghy were all we needed, but there is so much space there you can also fly kites, play football and swing ball. This year we did the National Trust Bush Trek at Malham. What a fabulous afternoon we had with the Rangers. We had a lovely walk, ate plants, did den building, toasted marshmallows and played games. In the past we have visited local farms and also dined at Billy Bobs Ice Cream Parlour. They had great fun on the swing ropes in the hay barn. I have already booked for next year and the children can’t wait. Pam West Yorkshire
