"Really enjoyed our stay!"
Good public transport, we only used the car once during our stay. Matlock is a beautiful town with lots of amenities and pleasant walks. Easy downhill walk into town but unless you are super fit I would recommend a bus or taxi back! Cottage was nicely furnished with plenty of kitchen items for cooking meals.

"Very nice cottage had everything we needed."
Couldn't get the coffee machine to work and even if we could felt it was a lot of hassle, maybe a pod machine would be better. Downstairs was fairly chilly but as it was the hottest weekend we didn't have any issues with this. Nice outside space and easy to access. Had a lovely weekend on our first family holiday thank you

Couldn't find instructions for the coffee machine though! Think it may be useful to make it clearer for public transport users that is a long steep climb to the property and probably best not to attempt it with luggage

Well placed for exploring the area.The neighbours were very friendly and helpful,and suggested some places to visit.The only downside and nothing can be done about this,is being at the top of an extremely steep hill, so strolling out on an evening can't be recommended unless you are extremely fit. Otherwise the cottage can't be faulted.

Comfy bed ensured a good night's sleep (as did the walk up Bank Road!). We couldn't get the radiator in the main bedroom to work, but the addition of the portable heater took any chill out of the room. Big bonus is the allocated parking space at the property

A few points though which may help others when considering the cottage. The downstairs (I.e. where the bedrooms are) of the cottage is extremely cold. There is a plug in radiator in the double bedroom but (perhaps due to the large patio doors in the room) we found it had little impact. We left the curtains drawn across the doors permanently. The allocated parking space is between two others whose cars never seem to move at all, and is fairly narrow. I have mobility issues due to arthritis and ideally need to open my car door fully in order to exit the vehicle without causing pain or falls. This has been impossible whilst parking at the cottage. There is then a flight of stairs from street level to cottage level - beware of packing too much! The photos on the website show what appears to be a door amidst front gardens. However, on arrival you will find instructions that none of the garden space to the front of the cottage actually belongs to it and therefore to avoid using it so as not to upset the neighbours. The lady who lives next door seems permanently upset anyway.....! The washing machine was a boon, however when staying for a fortnight and having a partner and daughterbwhonenjoy walking and outdoor sports, a tumble dryer would be a blessing too. We stayed for a fortnight and there was no option of fresh bedding after a week. Most cottages we stay in leave a change of bedding when guests are staying a fortnight. The shower screen needs attention as it doesn't seal and after the first shower we very quickly learnt that we needed to ensure a large towel was placed on the floor at the side of the bath to absorb the ensuing flood! The welcome basket and pint of milk in the fridge were lovely touches. However the shine was sort of knocked off a little with the comprehensive instructions about how to sort and bag up all the laundry in the different and labelled bags. We noticed this during Covid and absolutely understood the need for it at that point in time. However, we don't really feel it necessary any longer. A holiday is supposed to be a break from the daily grind - a daily grind which formme includes steipping our beds and sorting laundry! I wouldn't really expect to pay a decent sum of money to go on holiday and be expected to clean and sort the property for the next guests on leaving. Overall, a pleasant property in a beautiful spot but we felt probably more suited to short breaks and certainly not suitable for anyone with any mobility issues.
Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback. I am very sorry that you didn't make time to phone me during your 2 week stay. I always leave my phone number in the welcome card so that if you have any problems we can try to resolve them. There is a microbore radiator in the main bedroom and although the window and patio doors are double glazed it can be cooler than the rest of the house which is why I leave the radiator. We have had no complaints about this before. The thermostat for the central heating is clearly visible allowing you to set your own temperature. With regard to the parking space we obviously cannot make that bigger or ask our neighbours to move their cars but if you had phoned me I would have told you that there is alternative parking on the road outside the upper floor. We always provide the keys for the garden gate gate and top door. This entrance would have been much easier for you to bring in groceries etc as the kitchen is on this level. With regard to the garden at the front door , we do not own it. We only own the path to the front door. We try to be considerate to our neighbours. As you know we do have 2 outside seating areas at the side and also on the upper level as shown in the photos. We do not have a tumble dryer and we do not advertise that we do. We do have a clothes line and pegs and also a clothes horse. I apologise for not leaving a change of bedding out for you when I left the extra towels this is my fault I forgot to get them out. If you had phoned I could have told you how to access them. I disagree with you about the shower. It does not flood the bathroom if the shower screen is properly positioned. With regard to stripping the beds I am sorry you felt it an imposition. Most guests strip the beds and we provide laundry bags to put the bedding in. We certainly do not expect guests to clean and we don't ask them to do so. I would like to thank you for pointing out the fact that the binmen had refused to empty the recycling.When I contacted them they explained why. Thank you for writing in the guest book that you had left laundry tablets and washing up liquid for our next guests. I did notice that you had not any of the cleaning products that I leave in the guest caddy under the sink. If you were unable to open door because of the child locks I could have explained what to do if you had rung me. Once again than you for your feedback. Super clean everywhere and little touches that made if feel like home. The photos don't do it justice its much bigger and the patio areas are lovely and big space. Lovely welcome pack left in the kitchen which had everything you could need. The owners have thought of everything. Apart from the steep walk to Matlock town we would stay again but i'm not sure were up to the hills!!!!

Cannot find fault with a single thing, everything you need was provided. The welcome basket was greatly appreciated. This was a trip away for our 53rd wedding anniversary. The weather was not too good but we still had a wonderful time. We felt at home in your cottage.

Lovely owners. Directions led us astray to the rear of the property. That hill is horrendous so we used the bus to get back up it. A summer break woild have been better so we could use the two patios. Nice welcome basket and milk in the fridge.

. everything is there, a full set of helpful 'instructions' about using quality kitchen kit .. then with excellent help from owner Carol the moment a query about tv channelling arose. Non-technical person me! As a place to feel happy and relaxed Amber Cottage has everything without any traffic noise that would stop you hearing the Sparrows at their breakfast, dinner tea! The southern views across the valley had Matlock town roofs shrouded under a December temperature inversion, the Abraham folly in good view though and this house an holiday base central to much you'd seek in the Peak. Since Victorian times they've said the Matlock area is the 'Switzerland of England' ... you can certainly feel the ambience and share that same era of golden opportunity from this place called Amber ... a jewel to enjoy, and not just what's outside the front door.

The popular Peak District town of Matlock, together with its neighbour, Matlock Bath, has been attracting visitors to the area since the spa was developed in the late 17th century. Set in the beautiful wooded gorge of the River Derwent, the Matlocks offer a range of shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as a host of attractions including Gulliver’s Kingdom and the Peak District Mining Museum. Magnificent views down the gorge can be enjoyed from the cable car which takes visitors up to the Heights of Abraham – a great place for all the family with its showcaves, nature trail, water gardens and Owl Maze.
