  • "We were a family of 7 adults and 3 children!"

We enjoyed our week at The Vines, there was plenty of room for us all! The house could do with some TLC in parts but on the whole was very good! It was clean and well equipped, just a few more mugs would have helped though! The outside shower was very helpful after coming from the beach! All in all a successful stay! Frolics next door is an excellent restaurant! Can’t say the same about food in the Three Golden Cups!! Walk to the beach isn’t too bad, there’s a good footpath to the left of the hill going down to the beach! Also walks along the coastal path behind the house are very good!

The boot room was great after a visit to the beach.

  • "Third time staying at the Vines."

Ideal base for a holiday with the wider family. Only issues encountered were that the oven needed a thorough clean and that the bins didn't get emptied.

  • "Excellent house and location."

Stunning beach and coastline. Comfy beds and good showers in each bathroom. However, there were not enough plates for the 11 in our party plus some bits of the house looked a bit tired especially the kitchen/diner and hall and need some repair and painting. Lovely stay, great restaurant and pub on the doorstep.

  • "Significant mould and water ingress issues at the property which is both a health and a safety concern."

Cleanliness a minor issue with under beds not having been cleaned for some time. Fantastic location and property size however and we had a great time.

Condensation in a house of this age is very common and is a consequence of double glazing window systems and a strong heating system. It is easily resolved by simply opening windows to let some of the moisture escape when it is wet outside and warm inside. The cause of the mould you mention has been identified and rectified and the area fully cleaned, and steps taken to ensure it doesn’t occur again. We took your comments very seriously and have discussed at length with both Sykes and an independent health and safety advisor and neither see any cause of concern and certainly do not consider it a health and safety issue, although action has been taken to remove any risk of it occurring again. We do however note that you enjoyed your stay at the Vines and for this are thankful. Property Owner

Very homely and cosy. The surrounding area was beautiful with good amenities - a pub and a restaurant just steps away. Would definitely recommend and return.

  • "A lovely well sized property, plenty of room for 6 adults and 3 lively children."

Was disappointed not to find a hairdryer at the property although advertised with one luckily one of our party had brought their own. Also disappointing to find the coffee machine or grinder not working and also the iron was not working either! Despite these issues we had a great time visiting local beaches and attractions. Lovely drink at Three Golden Cups one afternoon and fabulous meal and warm welcome at Frolics. The property had everything we needed to cook a Sunday roast but no potato masher! All in all a great week in a lovely big house in a good location, would recommend and book again

  • "We stayed at the Vines over August Bank Holiday weekend as a group of three families, 6 adults and 7 children."

The size of the house was perfect for our needs with five good sized bedrooms. The two lounges worked well to give the adults and children separate space and the kitchen diner was of a good size with ample space outside. Whilst nicely decorated we felt that the house was in need of some attention. We found wallpaper hanging off in one of the bathrooms, issues with toilets not working perfectly and a leaking shower. The location was good, easy to find and situated opposite the local pub which serves nice food. There was live music on two nights when we were there which you could hear from the house but it finished early and was only minimal with the windows closed. There is also a restaurant next door but we did not try this. It is only a short walk to a brilliant beach and close to bigger areas such as Swansea etc. For the price we paid for the property and the early check out/ late check in time we felt it was unreasonable to ask for all beds to be stripped as well as some other cleaning requests. It’s hard enough to be packed up by 10am without worrying about extra cleaning tasks. In summary a good sized property in need of some attention.

Thank you for your feedback. Your comments about the bathrooms were well received and we have undergone a full refurbishment over the winter. You can see updated photos of the bathrooms at www.thevinessoutherndown.co.uk You also make a very fair point about the time of check out and its something we have been working with Sykes to help us make things easier at checkout. Should you re-visit the Vines, please let us know if you require a later check out and we will do all we can to make it so. Thank you again for your feedback. Property Owner

Close to the beach but also handy for the city. We loved the big kitchen diner and having two lounges so the teenagers had their own space.

  • "Very accommodating and comfortable property."

The best part is the kitchen/diner open plan room facilitating cooking and dining for three families (10 people). The two reception rooms are also offering easiness of passing the evening time for 6 adults of various preferences. Rather small garden for the kids to play in, but still the barbeque and the table with benches facilitate an evening of gathering round the barbie while having some drinks. What is rather scarce in the house of this size are the bathrooms. One ensuite bathroom, and one other upstairs present a challenge for 10 people sleeping there. There is one more bathroom downstairs, but as everybody has all their washing stuff upstairs, this always causes morning and evening congestions. Also the state of the bathrooms is pretty rustic. All run down and calling for an upgrade. What really astonished us, people who often rent places for holidays and have never come across this requirement before, was a strict instruction as to how to leave the property at the end of the stay. Understandably, we were asked to empty all the kitchen cupboards, the bins, the fridge, and the dishwasher, no problem. However, rather astonishingly, it was also put to us to strip all the beds, place the bedding, and the towels, in an allocated area changing from instruction to instruction; all before 10.00 a.m. on the day of leaving! Not something we would have wanted to do on top of the whole rush of packing that morning!

  • "What a beautiful home."

...so tastefully decorated, spacious and well equipped. We had a fantastic time at The Vines. The location was perfect, with the pub right outside the front door and the beach 10 mins walk away. The kitchen/diner is such a sociable space, the beds were comfy and the garden perfect for enjoying some alfresco dining in the beautiful sunshine that we had. I can also highly recommend The Tipsy Kitchen - local caterers who delivered food to the house which was absolutely delicious! I hope to come back again one day

  • "Three generations of family met at the cottage to celebrate a big birthday."

The house was plenty big enough for 12 of us to come together and party, but 2x sitting rooms, a large kitchen diner and summer house allowed us to have our own space. The garden was secure and big enough for the little ones to play out whilst the adults chilled. We enjoyed the pub across the road that did great food. Beach is just a short walk. Great location, near enough to everything but far enough to feel like you’re getting away from it all. Absolutely loved the decor and super clean and comfortable. It’s just a shame I don’t actually live here!! Would highly recommend.

Upon entering into the property, step into the entrance hallway before slipping through the door on the right to find the first sitting room, a high ceilinged space looking to the front elevation with period woodblock flooring, large sash windows and a woodburning stove set within a traditional hearth; the focal point of this room.

Return to the hallway and take the second door to find another sitting room, a space where you can unwind with a good book or younger guests of the group can escape to, to catch up on the latest box set.

Next is the kitchen/diner, a perfectly proportioned room featuring a large dining table, all the quality modern appliances one would expect and a sleek breakfast bar, where you can linger over a wine as dinner simmers on the hob.

From here, slip through the door to discover the utility, a space which works in synergy with the kitchen, housing a microwave, a fridge, laundry equipment and plenty of space to keep the kitchen clutter free for the chef of the group at the end of the first course!

Take the grand staircase as the evening draws to a close, to find five elegantly presented bedrooms, the master suite notable for its sumptuous king-size bed and modern en-suite.

Bedroom two is a large space with another king-size bed and walk-in wardrobe, whilst bedroom three offers a double bed.

The remaining bedrooms consist of a double bedroom and a quadruple bunkroom, allowing for a flexible sleeping arrangement and have use of the family bathroom, featuring a bath and a separate walk-in shower.

To the exterior of the Edwardian home is an off-road parking space, as well as a gated entrance, which grants access to the garden, enjoying a southerly aspect, a lawn area and a patio area with an outdoor dining area.

Better acquaint yourself with the village further, home to an ever-popular restaurant, ‘Frolics’ and a pub, as well as access to the beach of Dunraven Bay, promising to be a great opportunity for fossil hunting, rock pooling, surfing or simply soaking up the sunshine from the soft sands.

Avid ramblers can take to the coastal path to uncover further breath-taking vistas or you could brush up on the local history by visiting the Dunraven Castle ruins and walled gardens.

Within the local area there are an abundance of golf courses, including the Royal Porthcawl, St. Mary Hill and nearby Southerndown Course, whilst the neighbouring village of f St. Brides Major has a shop for picking up any essentials.

Beachcombers can venture further afield to explore the delights of Merthyr Mawr near Porthcawl or travel further afield to the iconic beach resort of Barry Island for a traditional day out by the sea.

The capital city of Cardiff is well-worth exploring too, home to Cardiff Castle, The National Museum and a number of great dining and shopping opportunities.

Alternatively, stay close to home and visit the Porthcawl Lighthouse, The Swing Bridge in Bridgend, Wiggleys Fun Farm and Bryngarw Country Park.
