"What a great little cottage in a fabulous location ."
The views were beautiful from all windows . The cottage is well equipped and very comfortable . Our host was attentive and helpful throughout our stay - many thanks for the lovely cake ( it was enjoyed by all )! We will return .
-
"Stairs quite steep and with the 2 flights if carrying heavy case is a struggle ."
Sofa and armchairs could be more comfortable. Owner owns shop downstairs . Tried to introduce ourselves but kept missing her due to shop hours being different most days
-
"Beautiful well kept property stunning location,The only fault I found was that the front right hand cooker ring would not turn on, Susan the owner couldn’t have been any more helpful with parking of our motorcycles."
( very helpful) , I slept in the little room opposite the shower room and if you could hear the church bells ringing all night, not loud enough to keep you awake but I could hear them, Apart from that we had a very nice time. Good food at the forester’s Arms . Beautiful village , James Nelson

"An excellent welcome to the property by Susan."
Great to have nearby (free) parking for one of the cars. Impressed with the vast supply of kitchen crockery, glasses and utensils. Rooms were lovely and bright. Would highly recommend this property to anyone.

"A Beautiful apartment, very spacious with lots of facilities and lots of lovely views."
-
"Great cottage and very good service from the owner."
We were very comfortable. Dunster has a good combination of walks and places to visit, some interesting shops and some good places to eat. Church bells take a bit of getting used to.

"Fabulous cottage, well equipped and wanted for nothing."
Beautiful location and setting. Our most pleasant UK holiday to date and would not hesitate to return and recommend to others. Thank you Susan.

"We absolutely loved this flat."
It was furnished and decorated with real care and , quality and thoughtfulness. It felt like a home , not a holiday flat, which is rare and was very much appreciated.
I could not be more delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Castleview . Thank you for your kind words which are much appreciated. Property Owner

"We really loved our stay at Castle View holiday cottage."
I visited along with my partner and two young girls, the cottage was so well equipped with everything we needed for our youngest including highchair, cot and stairgate and it made our stay so easy and comfortable. Susan was also really helpful and let us know she was available anytime we needed, she even went out of her way to post two toys our girls had left at the cottage back to our home. It's a truly stunning area of England with so much in walking distance or a short drive, the castle in Dunster was such a good day out and the village itself was delightful even with its own playground, great for breaking up the day with littlies. We would 100% recommend staying here to anyone and will hopefully be back in future :) P.S a note on the bells - we personally enjoyed them, they are a very unusual and quirky part of the stay, we a game of guessing what king of song it would play on each day and enjoyed listening to the different tunes. I honestly didn't notice them whilst sleeping beyond the first night but if you are particularly sensitive or uptight just maybe bring some earplugs...
Thank you, for your kind comments. It was good to meet you and your family, and I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay in Dunster and at Castle View. Warmest best wishes to you all Susan Property Owner

"The cottage is very well equipped and all your needs are catered for, the owner is lovely and very helpful and the tea, cake and flowers on arrival were a lovely touch."
The bells could be an issue for some people especially when they play longer tunes, however we were fine with them.
Thank you for your kind words, so happy that you had a restful and happy stay in this beautiful village. Very best wishes Susan Property Owner

"This was our second stay in this lovely central apartment."
It is ideally situated for us and has plenty of room for each of us to have our own space. We enjoyed trips out but the apartment was a nice place to be when it inevitably rained. Everything was as we were expecting and I am sorry that we did not manage to link up with the owner who was away for a few days during our stay. I would definitely recommend this cottage and we hope to be able to stay here again in the future.
It was a pleasure and a compliment to have you return to Castle View. I am delighted that your stay was so enjoyable. I hope to see you again in due course. My very best wishes Susan Property Owner

"This proved to be a delightful bolt hole, well equipped, homely and ideal for exploring Exmoor."
Some folk have found the church clock bells irritating but we enjoyed them. Thank you Susan for a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. Chris & Liz.
Thank you for your very kind and welcomed comments. It is heart-warming to know that guests have had a restful and enjoyable stay. What is there not to like about unique and beautiful Exmoor and Dunster. Warmest regards Susan Property Owner

"A beautiful, spacious and comfortable apartment."
It's really convenient for Dunster shops, cafes and restaurants and right opposite the wonderful Dunster Castle and Mill. It is also a great starting point for some great walks and sightseeing. Great to have a dedicated parking place just round the corner. A great place for a relaxing stay.

"Castle View Cottage was a lovely apartment in which to spend our family holiday; it was very homely and well appointed, and the landlord Susan could not have been more welcoming and helpful."
Dunster is a lovely location, the castle and grounds are stunning as is the village itself. There is not a huge range of restaurants, the Luttrell Arms Hotel is lovely but quite expensive, the food at the Stags Head was hit and miss, and expensive for what it was. The big issue for us was the church bells, these seem to go on throughout the night, and being so close became a real problem, as my wife and I and our daughter were regularly woken in the middle of the night, or on some occasions kept awake for what felt like hours. The bells seem to play at 15 minute intervals, midnight seems to require a long discordant tune, then every 15 minutes is struck until at 01:00 there is another protracted chiming, on our last night we couldn’t decide if it was Oranges and Lemons, or something similar. At 05:00 every morning we were as a family woken by the bells playing out for several minutes, needless to say this wasn’t welcomed. We live in a village with a church so are used to church bells, but the church at Dunster is on another level entirely. Several shop keepers asked us how we felt about them, so they are clearly a talking point.
Hi there, thank you for your feedback. We do have a note on the website mentioning how the church clock chimes on the quarter and with a melody at various other times. We are sorry it was a disturbance to you. Property Owner

"Castle View is an outstanding property the owners Sue & Richard are a lovely friendly very informative couple,Tea biscuits & flowers lovely welcome surprise, This is not a critisism I just think that photographs 21,22,23,24,25,27 are not relevant to the property they are views of surrounding area, because we thought there was a garden with the property and views of the west somerset railway and somewhere to relax and sit."
Thank you for your feedback. We try to provide area shots of all our properties to give a glimpse into the area you will be staying in. The photos show the church and its gardens, but no private garden for the property is mentioned in the listing. - The Helpful Holidays Team. Property Owner

"Our comments are as in the guest book and on the whole we had a most enjoyable stay."
We found the constant ringing of church bells every quarter of an hour did not make for easy sleeping.
-
"Lovely property, cosy, clean with well equipped kitchen."
No need to move the car, plenty of walks from the door, parking space a huge bonus. Dunster delightful with very good pubs and restaurants. We had a super stay, thank you
-
"The only downside was not the property itself but the continual chiming of the church clock 24/7."
Didn't sleep at all the first night and when we spoke to the owner she did suggest ear plugs but I wish we had known that beforehand. I just feel that this could be a deterrent to future bookings in the area.
Thank you for your feedback which we always welcome. We are sorry to hear that you did not sleep the first night of your holiday We do mention the chimes from the clock on the website and many guests find the clock chimes to be charming during their holiday. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the property and look forward to welcoming you back. Property Owner

"Our family loved the holiday as the cottage was cosy and meticulously planned out."
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was a beautiful cottage and placed in the heart of Dunster.
-
"A really lovely holiday in a really lovely cottage."
Lots to do in Dunster and Minehead with plenty of walks on the doorstep. Thank you, to our friendly hosts. We also loved the Portmerion China and the well equipped kitchen.
-
"The cottage is absolutely gorgeous and we both felt incredibly comfortable."
The beds, bedrooms and bathrooms were all very well equipped. It's a very restful space which we both thoroughly enjoyed. Dunster and surrounds too are just gorgeous not to talk of the delicious food available in the village! Many thanks to Sue and Richard for a wonderful stay.

Was a perfect location in Dunster and had everything we needed ,Susan who owned the property was very helpful and a lovely lady ,the property had lots of old world charm ,I hope to stay there again in the future

"Lovely apartment, well situated in the village and excellent facilities - better than many we have stayed in."
Susan, the owner, was very helpful and pleasant. However I think that the listing should have mentioned the following a) 2 sets of steep stairs to get to the upper floor b) car parking for one car only which is a short walk from the apartment - any other cars parked on the road away from the apartment c) apartment situated right on the road which could be noisy and right next to the church with bells which rang on the quarter hour all through the night. These aspects wouldn’t have influenced our decision to stay but may have helped others to make a decision if included in the listing.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, we're pleased to hear that you enjoyed Castle View. The stairs are mentioned in the property description and are not steep. There is one flight up to the living area and another to the bedrooms. We feel very fortunate to have one car parking space, as parking in Dunster is highly sought after. There are also other places to park nearby. The chimes are actually from a clock, not the church bells and are usually a welcome part of life in this medieval village. Property Owner

"A lovely comfortable apartment very conveniently located in the centre of Dunster."
Very well equipped with a good kitchen and plenty of cutlery and crockery. Comfortable beds and nice bathrooms. I had some initial reservations about the parking (dedicated off-road space 50 yards down the road) as it was on the narrowest part of the busy main road through the village. However it actually turned out to be absolutely fine; no problems getting in and out. Note the apartment is right next to the church, whose bells mark the hour, half-hour and quarter-hour - right through the whole night! It didn't actually bother us, we rather enjoyed it, but others may find it more bothersome. One further point to note is that the wi-fi is very weak: it's extremely slow and kept dropping out (like being back in the '90s with a dial-up connection). So anyone planning to log on and do some sneaky work whilst staying might really struggle, eg with Zoom meetings.

"This is a great propery in the center of Dunster with a view of the castle."
Its right next to the church and some lovely public gardens. It's just a short stroll to the High street and the town's lovely independent shops. We walked, every day, in a different direction directly from Castle View. The property was fully equipped and very comfortable although we did find the fridge a little small & the ice box inadequate. If you're a light sleeper you might find the sound of the church bells sounding every 15 minutes a disturbance!

"Lovely apartment with lots of room."
-
"This was a lovely property very nicely presented,on entering there are two flights of stairs, one up to the first floor living accommodation,a nice kitchen and spacious open plan dining and lounge area."
The stairs then continue up again to the bedrooms and bathroom. The master bedroom was large with a comfortable bed and a large en-suite bathroom. The family bathroom was also quite large with basin, shower and toilet. The two other bedrooms were nicely furnished, one with a single bed,the other with two single beds. There was more than adequate storage for all clothes and property. The owner,Susan was very nice and helpful. Dunster is a lovely village with welcoming shops and attractions, lots of very nice walks in the area to suit all abilities.Covid does cause a few problems, generally you could enter pubs and restaurants, midweek no problems, weekends need to book. Altogether thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

"This was our 4th visit to Castle View and this says a lot as we never usually return to the same cottage twice!"
Castle View is clean, cosy, homely and warm (very important when you’ve booked for February) and very well equipped. The new shower is lovely with lots of hot water. The appt is on the first floor looking over the castle and in a lovely position in the village, with walks for everyone on the doorstep and lovely shops and eateries near by. Joanne & Brian

"I have been unable to sleep since the church bells chime every 15 minutes ALL thru the night."
At 1am it also played a long tune. I contacted the call centre before I booked to ask about the bells to be told they did not chime during the night. Very unhappy. Will be going home early. Will not book thru Skykes again.

"The accommodation was great because it was so accessible to the village for the shops and, in the evening, for eating out."
It was really comfortable with nice bed and bedding, a well equipped kitchen and plenty of seating. It's decor is quite dated which didn't bother us as it was nostalgically 1980s and I enjoyed using all the Portmerion Botanic Garden crockery but maybe younger generations might find that all a bit much, particularly the thickly carpeted bathrooms. But on the whole it was an excellent, well looked after property which we wouldn't hesitate to recommend. If we return we might take earplugs as the church clock is very busy throughout the night!

"We had a great last minute getaway after our flights for another holiday were cancelled."
The location was lovely having never been before and we found both the owner of the property and Sykes very helpful. The accommodation was perfect for what we needed and we look forward to going back.

"Susan whom the property belongs to was very good with a personal visit to make sure all was ok."
The property is very nice and very well located. I would go again but there would have to be some improvements. Pro’s Clean and tidy. Excellent location. Good landlord. Peaceful and quiet. Cons. There is a great big bath in the en suite that cannot be used due to the water flow and heat when the tap is ran for any length of time. The quilt in the en suite was clearly well past it’s best. We had to buy a new one which we left there. There were only two dishwasher tablets so we had to go out and buy. There was no washing powder or tablets so we would have had to go out shopping once again. It is the small things that make a difference. The property is advertised as having 3 bathrooms. There are only two The property is advertised as having a king size bed two doubles and a singe in the bedrooms. There is a king size and three single beds.
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to leave us your feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at Castle View. Thank you for letting us know about the bathrooms, we have now updated this onto the properties features. The duvet in the en suite bedroom is new and cleaned regularly, and has a quality cover. We ensure guests have dishwasher tablets for arrival but guests generally buy additional to their requirements with their other shopping. The owner leaves a welcome pack for guests. Property Owner

About the location
DUNSTER
Minehead 3 miles.
Dunster is a popular tourist village near the North Somerset coast and is a largely unspoiled spot: the centre of the town retains many old buildings which hug the winding cobbled streets. The whole village is dominated by the castle on its hill but the focal point of the High Street is the picturesque Yarn Market, a covered area built in 1609 particularly to accommodate the wool traders and other cloth merchants. Inside Dunster castle there are fine plasterwork ceilings and the extensive terraced and landscaped gardens contain many rare shrubs and trees, and offer marvelous views out to sea, and towards the Quantocks. For those who enjoy exploring the countryside, Dunster is within the Exmoor National Park and there are plenty of footpaths leading onto the surrounding hills of Grabbist and walks into Dunster’s Deer Park at the foot of the castle. Dunster is well served with traditional inns, individual shops and interesting places to explore including the working 18th century watermill. West Somerset’s premier resort of Minehead is less than three miles away and has golden sandy beaches, seaside attractions for the visitor, and plenty of cafes, shops and bistros.
Note: Church clock chimes beautifully on the quarter with a melody at various other times.
Note: WiFi - Only suitable for light use, emails and internet access. Not suitable for downloading or Streaming.
