This is a perfect location for a couple, or with children, as I would not recommend the bunk beds in the second bedroom for an adult. Having said that, my 24 year old grandson still managed to sleep well enough! We enjoyed our stay in this quiet and peaceful locality, which offered great value too, during what was the first week of the Easter school holiday time in Wales.

The property was furbished with lovely touches such as the spoon hooks and supplies of toiletries. A very enjoyable week was had by all!

Liz was the most amazing host. Good base for exploring South Wales. Lovely to be in the countryside with a river walk close by. Liz had left us chicken eggs and a fresh bottle of farm milk with the silver top in the fridge. It was delicious and we were super excited to receive it. Fresh garden flowers were on the table when we arrived. Would definitely go back if we every found ourselves in the area again.

Past comment ref noise from fridge was found to be no more than the normal level, perhaps being in such a quite location without traffic noise gave to hearing above every day noise. The host is very welcoming and helpful. Some areas we feel could be improved: the sofa is not comfortable, the fridge (which is located within the sitting area) is noisy - we did report this to the owner. The kitchen is well stocked with anything needed on holiday. Otherwise we had a very enjoyable stay at Rectory Cottage and explored many places.

The owner lived in the adjacent B&B and was very welcoming and even offered to do any washing we had. There are chickens that occasionally wander around and the owners friendly dogs come and say hi but then leave you be. The directions to find the property were helpful and it’s location is out of the way and peaceful.

  • "This was a fantastic place to stay for two of us and our dog - the cottage has everything you might need and is extremely dog friendly."

The double bed is incredibly comfy, the little kitchen is very well equipped, and the courtyard garden (more roomy than it looks) is totally enclosed so we were able to leave the door open all night for the dog without worrying that he'd escape. The owners are truly delightful - they're always nearby and ready to either help or to share a friendly chat, but they didn't intrude on our privacy at all. One of our favourite things to do was to drive up to the Foxhunters Car Park at the top of the Blorenge at sunset - it's only a 15 minute drive and the views are spectacular. Beyond that, the Beacons and Black Mountains are all within a 45 minute drive. A brilliant holiday that we wish didn't have to come to an end. Thank you Liz and Kate! X

The cottage is just a short walk from the village of Penpergwm in the undulating Welsh border countryside and just a short drive away lies a hub of fantastic restaurants and one reason why many people visit the area.

A real gastronomic haven, as well as being situated close to amazing mountains and walks, the cottage is a perfect base for couples and small families looking to sample the surrounding area and its foodie delights.

Set over the ground floor there are two bedrooms, one large with an en-suite family bathroom, and a smaller bedroom with full-size single bunk beds.

There is an open plan living area with a well-equipped kitchen, a dining area and a comfy seating area with a TV, where you can relax and possibly enjoy some of the delightful local produce you have picked up on your day of exploring.

Outside, you can sit in the small courtyard garden and enjoy a glass of something cold, whilst discussing the day’s events; the children can explore the adjacent garden with its resident chickens and collect eggs.

The whole area offers stunning views and walks across a variety of terrain, but is also rich in Industrial Heritage.

The Big Pit National Coal Museum and surrounding Ironworks is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a wonderful area to spend the day.

You are also ideally placed to explore the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons), walk up the Sugar Loaf, Skirrid or Blorange Mountains or take a short drive and explore the stunning Wye Valley, with the striking ruins of Tintern Abbey.

The whole area offers numerous outdoor activities such as pony trekking, canoeing or fishing on the Wye or Usk rivers, as well as many footpaths and cycle routes that can be explored.

Although the whole area is full of activities, this cottage is within an hour’s drive of Cardiff, the cultural capital city of Wales, The Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells, The Royal Forest of Dean and Bristol.

Easy to reach is also the world-famous Hay-on-Wye, with its myriad of boutique-style shops, renowned book shops, and of course, the literary festival providing a massive choice if you are looking for a packed holiday experience.
