Harlech Castle
Built by King Edward I, Harlech Castle played a key part in his invasion of Wales between the years 1282 and 1289. And over the next few centuries, played a role in several conflicts, including the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn between 1294 and 1295.
The fortress was built under the guidance of master architect James of St George. Its design ensures that it is a formidable natural defence. Thanks to the 108 steps that climbed steeply up the rock face, the castle was difficult to conquer!
Harlech Castle eventually fell to the Welsh Prince, Owain Glyndŵr in 1404 and became his residence and military headquarters. This was until Harlech was captured by English forces in 1409!
Today, Harlech Castle is one of the finest examples of late 13th-century military architecture in Europe, and it is classed as a World Heritage Site. Those visiting can easily access the castle by the incredible ‘floating’ footbridge and discover the mighty coastal fortress and its stunning setting!
