National War Museum Edinburgh
No visit to Edinburgh Castle is complete without exploring the National War Museum! The museum sits within an 18th-century ordnance storehouse conversion, in Hospital Square.
The museum offers free admission and boasts a range of artefacts dating back to the 17th century. So, if you’re looking for an extensive insight into Scotland at war, this is the place to tour!
It’s also accessible for all, providing facilities for families as well as those with limited mobility. Assistance dogs are allowed on site and hearing loops are also provided.
One of the main exhibits on offer is ‘A Grand Life for a Scotsman’. This gallery shows the day-to-day life of Scottish troops, featuring clothing and belongings. Be sure to say hi to Bob the dog!
The National War Museum is equally as immersive as it is interesting. If you’re coming with little ones, you can follow one of two fascinating trails: The First World War Trail and The Castle Quest Trail.
These will take you around the castle’s grounds via a provided map. The maps contain several activities aimed towards 8-11 year olds, centring around maths and trivia.
After exploring the trails, rest your legs in the museum’s café or the castle’s tea rooms.
Come and learn about Scotland’s fascinating warfare for free at this museum…
