Rievaulx Abbey
Enjoying views over the River Rye valley in the North York Moors National Park are the dramatic ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. This English Heritage site is a great way for families to uncover the Cistercian monastry’s history.
During your explorations, you’ll get to walk through architecture that’s over 1,000 years old! A wealth of Romantic poets and artists admired the abbey, and you’ll see why as you explore the picturesque remains.
Enhance your visit further by picking up an audio tour. This will reveal the abbey’s past, from its founding by 12 monks in 1132, to its dissolution in 1538.
For even more history, the museum rests nearby with a wealth of artefacts for you to examine!
Rievaulx Abbey Walk
Take your excursion further by hiking along the circular Helmsey Castle and Rievaulx Abbey Walk. The seven-mile stretch takes you on a walk by a bluebell wood all the way to Helmsley Castle!
Once you’ve reached the castle’s ruins, you can retrace your steps back to the abbey. Here, you can enjoy a well-deserved rest at the Rievaulx Abbey Cafe.
If you’d like to turn your walk into a longer hike, the trail leads onto The Cleveland Way.
Enjoy a mixture of beautiful views and dramatic ruins at this English Heritage site…
