Perfect for… iconic landmarks, dog-friendly beaches and fascinating geology
The very distinctive limestone arch of Durdle Door is one of Dorset’s most iconic landmarks. It sits proudly on the Jurassic Coast, the first natural World Heritage site.
The collision of tectonic plates 25 million years ago led to the creation of the Alps, as well as a collection of rocks that are now referred to as South Dorset. Durdle Door formed over thousands of years, as a result of the sea crashing against the hard layers of limestone in the rocks, washing away the softer rocks and leaving behind the arch formation you see today.
Whilst enjoying the must-see wonder, visitors can also participate in many coastal adventures. These include coast steering, rock pooling, snorkelling and nature walks to take in all of the splendour. Durdle Door beach is the perfect setting for a relaxing day trip and is also dog-friendly.
