Godrevy Lighthouse
Godrevy Lighthouse was the inspiration for Virginia Woolfe’s To the Lighthouse and visitors to the site today will not struggle to see why it captured the author’s imagination. Nestled three miles out to sea on the rocky Godrevy Island, the lighthouse exists to warn passing ships of the dangers of the perilous rocks nearby.
Before the 1858 construction of Godrevy Lighthouse, many wrecks washed up on the nearby beaches as a result of a collision with the rocks. Once manned by lighthouse keepers, the Godrevy light – and bell during fog – guided vessels to safety. Today, the lighthouse is solar-powered and continues to serve shipping traffic as well as provide a fascinating historical point of interest to those visiting Godrevy beach.
