Carvannel Downs

Nestled on the north coast of Cornwall between North Cliffs and Portreath Beach is Carvannel Downs, a mile long stretch of coastline within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here visitors can discover Ralph’s Cupboard, a collapsed sea cave.

The cave is named after its legendary occupant, a giant named Wrath – or Ralph – who was said to wreck ships and steal their cargo, storing it in his cupboard. The best way to get a glimpse of the downs and its famous sea cave is via the coastal path from Portreath towards Godrevy or park up at Basset Cove Carpark and approach the downs from there.

The walk is 7.3 miles and takes around 2.5 hours.

Carvannel Downs is a great walk…
