Hardknott Pass, Lake District
Can you take on Britain’s ‘steepest’ and ‘wildest’ road? Hardknott Pass rests in the western part of the Lake District and offers a twisting journey for cyclists, motorists and hikers.
It’s known as being the most straightforward route between the middle of the Lake District to West Cumbria. It was originally built by the Romans in AD 110 to link Ravenglass with Ambleside and Kendal.
Hardknott Pass has since been a popular cycling and driving route that’s known for its difficulty. During World War II the War Office used the area to train tanks. This destroyed the road, however it has since been repaired and turned into a motor road, linking Eskdale to Ambleside.
Nowadays, it sprawls over 13 miles, perfect for cycling and hiking enthusiasts! You can also drive along the road, but care must be taken due to its steepness.
