The Horseshoe Pass

The Horseshoe Pass dates back to 1811 and was amongst several turnpike roads in Denbighshire. In Welsh, the road is called Bwlch yr Oernant which means “pass of the cold stream”. The road connects Llandegla to Llangollen, near Wrexham.

The mountain pass’ views are simply magnificent, with a stunning valley and mountains surrounding the horseshoe-shaped road. The road ascends to almost 1,367ft; so the views won’t be hard to miss!

There are plenty of laybys and picnic areas situated along The Horseshoe Pass, making it easy to climb up the surrounding peaks. Two must-climbs are Llantysilio Mountain and Cyrn-y-Brain.

Due to its close proximity to the Clwydian Range, you may spot a gathering of sheep on The Horseshoe Pass. Please take care when coming across them!

The Ponderosa Café can be found at the highest part of the pass, offering delicious snacks and amazing views.

The Horseshoe Pass is a must-see in North Wales…
