Carlisle Castle
Head to the site where Mary, Queen of Scots was held captive in the 16th century by order of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Mary’s time here and her walks at the front of the castle inspired the name ‘Lady’s Walk.’
The exhibition is the best way to learn all about Mary as well as the many other famous inhabitants of Carlisle Castle. You’ll also find out how the castle was occupied by the Scottish King, David I, during a period of turbulent border conflicts between Scotland and England. The exhibition also includes a 3D virtual tour of the keep and Captain’s Tower.
After exploring the castle, head into Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life and learn about Cumbria’s Infantry Regiment and its soldiers past and present. See the WWI bible that stopped the bullet, drums that were once touched by Napoleon and military hardware that served the British Army through two World Wars and beyond.
The onsite café makes for the perfect way to end your visit. Here you can tuck into award-winning coffee, cakes, snacks, and ice creams.
