As you lace up your walking boots and head out on the route, be sure to keep an eye out for red squirrels and roe deer, amongst other creatures that may cross your path.

Here are some of the key features that await you along the Bolam Lake and Shaftoe Crags Circular walk:

Bolam Lake: Your journey kicks off at the Low House Wood Car Park, where you’re immediately encased in lush woodlands. The trail hugs the edge of Bolam Lake, weaving through the Bolam Lake Nature Sanctuary, and offers glimpses of the abundant wildlife and serene waters.
Farmland Fields: Your adventure evolves as you venture into the open farmland, be sure to relish the splendid countryside views as you ascend toward the highest peak of your walk so far.
Shaftoe Crags: The prominent geological formation, rich in sandstone, offers breathtaking views and is an archaeological site with roots dating back to the Iron Age.
St. Andrew’s Church: After soaking in the beauty of Shaftoe Crags, the trail leads you across the fields to the stunning church in Bolam, offering a cultural and historical pitstop before your return to the lake.

Please note that Bolam Lake is closed to watersports and fishing from March to June.

Starting Point: The trail kickstarts from the Low House Wood Car Park, located on the southern side of Bolam Lake. This is your launchpad into the beautiful Bolam Lake Country Park.
Bolam Lake Nature Sanctuary: Make your way along the woodland edge, skirting the southern shore of Bolam Lake. The path takes you around the Bolam Lake Nature Sanctuary, where you can immerse yourself in the serene woodland environment.
Boathouse Wood Car Park: Continue your hike along the northern banks of Bolam Lake, taking in the refreshing waterside views. You’ll soon come across the Boathouse Wood Car Park, a perfect pit stop for refuelling.
Picnic and Facilities: Adjacent to the car park, discover a delightful picnic area and facilities, an idyllic base to pause, grab a bite to eat and take advantage of the toilet facilities.
Shaftoe Crags Marvel: Arriving at Shaftoe Crags, take the time to savour the spectacular views.
Return to Bolam Lake: Finally, make your way back to the car park by Bolam Lake, completing your memorable 13.7-kilometre journey through Northumberland’s enchanting landscape.
