Directions

  1. Begin at the Car Park: Your journey kicks off from the car park. Head left and walk along the scenic College Valley road, setting the stage for your exploration of this historic region.
  2. Follow the Great Hetha Sign: As you continue along the road, keep an eye out for a fingerpost marked ‘Great Hetha.’ At this point, leave the road behind and follow the pathway that ascends to your right. This is where your adventure to Great Hetha begins, and the climb is well worth it.
  3. Navigate the Plantation Corner: When you reach the corner of the plantation, take a right and follow the fence as it leads you uphill. The surrounding landscape starts to unveil its captivating beauty as you ascend.
  4. Choose the Left Fork: At the upcoming junction, opt for the left fork, and continue along the path. This trail will take you to the summit of Great Hetha, where the views into the Cheviot Hills await. Take your time to explore and appreciate the historical significance of this ancient hillfort.
  5. Exiting Great Hetha: After you’ve had your fill of Great Hetha’s enchantment, make your way to the west side of the hillfort and exit through the gap in the ramparts. Follow the path downhill until you reach a stile.
  6. Cross the Ladder Stile: Cross over the ladder stile, and then turn right to continue along the path leading to Little Hetha, your next destination.
  7. Discover Little Hetha: Explore the charm of Little Hetha, another of the College Valley’s intriguing hillforts. The historical significance and unique atmosphere of this site await your exploration.
  8. Returning to the Starting Point: After your visit to Little Hetha, return to the stile, cross back over, and continue straight ahead along the track. You’ll be on your way back to the plantation.
  9. Retrace Your Steps: Once back at the plantation, retrace your route down the hill, following the path that leads along the road, heading back to your starting point at the car park.
