Bickling Estate Walk

Offering one of the most picturesque settings for a woodland walk, the Blickling Estate Walk is a must when visiting Norfolk. The Blickling Estate Walk is set within the 4,600 acres of grounds which surround the grand home and are comprised of enchanting forests, farmland, and parkland.

The Blickling Estate Walk is mostly way marked and follows grassy paths, so be sure to wear correct footwear as it can sometimes get quite muddy! Dogs are also welcome on the trail so you can enjoy a wonderful day out amongst nature with your four-legged friend.

The trail spans for 4.5 miles and allows you to make the most of your time in the Blickling Estates grounds, as well as take in some fascinating sites along the way. Including the striking Blickling Mausoleum, the Church of St Andrew, and 17th-century ice house, and a pump house from WWII.

If you fancy a pit stop, head into the 17th-century Buckinghamshire Arms which serves delicious food and ales, all of which can be enjoyed in front of a crackling log fire. Or if you want to explore further after your walk, check out the estates Shop and Plant Centre or the second-hand bookshop.

For a walk in Norfolk you won’t forget, embark on the Bickling Estate Walk…

Directions

  1. Starting point: The trail begins from the main Blickling Estate car park near the visitor centre. Head over to the visitor centre and go around the left-hand side of the building and continue to follow the path down the lane.
  2. Buckinghamshire Arms: Cross the lane and you should see the 18th century Buckinghamshire Inn, take a left here and continue on as you walk past the front of the main house driveway and onto the Church of St Andrew.
  3. Weaver’s Way: From the church, cross the road and follow the road signposted as Weaver’s Way and continue on to Silvergate. After approximately 100 yards, you will reach the woods and the Grade II-listed ice house. Make your way back to the road and take a right until you reach a stile.
  4. Pond Meadow: Go through the stile and wander through the small woodland where you will pass through a second stile. You’ll reach Pond Meadow and another stile, continue on to the pump house, before taking a left turn into the field.
  5. Hall Farm: Keep going until you reach the lane opposite Hall Farm, then take a right and continue for approximately 110 yards. You should find a way-marker on the left, take a left where you will pass a cottage and before reaching the main road, take a left and wander along the path.
  6. Long Plantation: At the end of the path, take a right and cross the road. As you approach the kissing gate, turn left into Long Plantation and continue to follow the path, which will lead you to the Tower.
  7. Hyde Park: From the tower, follow the path and take a sharp right before reaching the main road. Follow the path along Buck’s Common woodland until you reach a gate. Go through the gate which will take you through Hyde Park and towards another gate, after which you need to turn right and follow the path downhill towards Great Wood.
  8. Mausoleum: From the Mausoleum, turn around and follow the edge of the woodland, taking the second path on the left. Continue down the path and bear right, where you will walk alongside the arable field in front of you. Keep walking as you make your way to a small woodland area known as the Beeches.
  9. End point: Leave the woodland and take a right as you head downhill and reach the park gates at the end. Continue through the small gate and after approximately 27 yards, take a left where you will have reached the main car park on your right.
